LANCASTER - The funeral for Mr. Gavin Bernard Cunningham was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28 from the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home. The Rev. Ricky Haile and the Rev. Gary Stevens officiated and burial followed in the Fort Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Cunningham, 34, died Monday, March 22, 2004, in Detroit.
Born in Lancaster, he was a son of Glenda Cunningham Walker and Frank Buchanon. He was employed with McDonald's.

Mr. Russell Burnham Hawes Sr., 79
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mr. Russell Burnham Hawes Sr., 79, formerly of Nashua, N.H., died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born in Arlington, Mass. on April 15, 1924, he was a son of Newell Hubbard Hawes and Helen Lytle Hawes. Upon graduation from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Hawes was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after that Harvard University. During this time he was employed as an electronics technician with Raytheon Corp. in Waltham, Mass. and with Cruft Laboratory at Harvard University. Mr. Hawes interrupted his education to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a corporal from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater as a radar technician. After World War II, Mr. Hawes graduated from MIT in 1949 with a bachelor of science in physics.
He was employed by Sperry Gyroscope Company in Great Neck, N.Y., where he was the group leader of systems for the Sparrow I missile development project. His duties included the design and development of the guidance systems and various electronic components for a series of test missiles. Also included was the design and development of electronic launching equipment for ground launching of the missiles. During this time, Mr. Hawes also worked at Point Mugu, Calif. as well, where he supervised the launching of the concluding series of test missiles, including conducting the on-pad pre-flight checkouts for the first guided Sparrow I missile.
Mr. Hawes also worked as a senior systems engineer in the electronics division of the American Machine and Foundry Company in Boston, where he worked on the development of the range-tracking sytems for the Terrier missile as well as the automatic distress alarm unit for the Air Force Rescue Network. He was also employed as section head for systems at Sanders Associates in Nashua, N.H., where he was involved in the development of a stability augmentation system (autopilot) for the F106 aircraft and the APN-77 doppler hovering device for the Bureau of Aeronautics. He was issued a number of patents in the fields of missile guidance systems and electronic components.
Mr. Hawes played hockey with the Piedmont Hockey Association in Winston-Salem for the past 25 years and was also a coach of little league hockey in the Winston-Salem Amateur Hockey Association. He participated in the over-75 Charles Schulz Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, Calif. three different times.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Constance Clough Hawes; a son, Russell Burnham Hawes Jr. and his wife, Meg, of Chester; and two grandchildren.

Miss Sunny Nicole Conner, 18
FORT LAWN - The funeral for Miss Sunny Nicole Conner, 18, of 4458 Lazy "H" Road, Fort Lawn, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Lando Cemetery.
Conner died Thursday, June 10 in an automobile accident.
Born in Rock Hill on Nov. 28, 1985, Miss Conner was the daughter of Billy Jordan and Beverly (Conner) Dosier.
Miss Conner was a 2004 graduate of Lewisville High School, where she served on student council. She was a member of Westerly Baptist Church, Fort Mill.
She is survived by her father, Billy; her mother and step-father, Doug and Beverly Dosier of Fort Lawn; two brothers, Corey and Brandon Conner, both of Fort Lawn; a maternal grandmother, Betty Conner of Fort Lawn; a paternal grandfather, William A. Jordan of Rock Hill; one half-sister, Linda Jordan, of Catawba, and her fiancé, Kevin Threatt of Fort Lawn.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Sonny and Angie Conner, 2007 Chestnut Lane, Edgemoor, and at the home of Doug and Beverly Dosier, 4458 Lazy "H" Road, Fort Lawn.
Memorials may be made to the Lewisville Community Scholarship Fund, 2227 Gill Jordan Road, Chester, South Carolina 29706.

Mrs. Thelma Gray Cowart, 87
GREAT FALLS - The funeral for Mrs. Thelma Gray Cowart of 221 St. Michael Ave. will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at First Baptist Church of Great Falls. The Rev. Dr. Aubrey B. Floyd, the Rev. Tracy Ivester and the Rev. John Paul Sellers will officiate and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Cowart, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her residence.
Born in Great Falls on July 30, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Zebulon V. Gray and Laura Viola Evans Gray. A member of First Baptist Church of Great Falls, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years, Mrs. Cowart graduated from Great Falls High School and was retired from J.P. Stevens Company. Mrs. Cowart also served as the site director at the Great Falls Senior Citizens Building.
Survivors include three sons, Henry Cowart Jr. of St. Louis, Mo., Richard Cowart of Concord and Steve Cowart of Columbia; five grandchildren; two brothers, Z.V. Gray of Dothan, Ala. and Richard Gray of Greenwood, S.C.; and a sister, Norma Broom of Great Falls.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry H. Cowart Sr.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight, Friday, at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, 26 Underwood Ave., Great Falls.

Mrs. Mary Stewart Bollinger, 81
CHESTER - The funeral for Mrs. Mary Violet Stewart Bollinger was conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at Cauthen Funeral Home's Lancaster Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Cameron officiated and burial followed in Chester Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Bollinger, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Charleston.
Born in Great Falls on March 18, 1923, she was a daughter of the late A.J. and LuMay Jacobs Stewart. A graduate of Chester High School, Mrs. Bollinger also graduated from Coronet Modeling School and had a professional portfolio including newspaper and magazine prints as well as original television ads for Burger King Corp. She represented the City of Miami in the Mrs. Florida Pageant in 1953 being named first runner-up and Mrs. Congeniality. In 1954, Mrs. Bollinger started the Charmette Modeling Academy and later opened two other schools. The academy is celebrating its golden anniversary this year, the current owner was taught and mentored by Mrs. Bollinger. In 1989, Mrs. Bollinger returned to Chalet des Fleurs in Pawleys Island, where she enjoyed her flower gardens and bird watching.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy McGuirt and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Texas and Jeanne Walker of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Fred O. Stewart Sr. of Chester; two sisters, Daisy Cole of Melbourne, Fla. and Joyce Luker of Lineville, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul M.F. Walker; and her second husband, Frank V. Bollinger.

Mrs. Lola Cornwell Gregory, 78
FORT MILL - Mrs. Lola Cornwell Gregory, 78, of 108 Gilmore St., formerly of Chester, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Miss Lillian 'Sister' Boyter, 96
CHESTER - Graveside services for Miss Lillian "Sister" Boyter of 116 Academy St. will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 15 in Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, N.C. with the Rev. Mel Arant officiating.
Miss Boyter, 96, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.
Born in Laurens, S.C. on Aug. 13, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Wise Marion Boyter and Mallie Ann Myers Boyter. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a niece, Helen Gantt of Chester; a great-niece, Susan Kovas of Chester; and two great-great-nephews, Joseph and Grant Kovas.

Mrs. Gladys Gardner Barton, 86
CHESTER - Graveside services for Mrs. Gladys Gardner Barton of 616 Sanders St. will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Oct. 22 in Lancaster Memorial Park with the Rev. Dale Roddey officiating.
Mrs. Barton, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at her residence.
Born in York County on Oct. 22, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Gardner and Rosa Alice Ogburn Gardner. A homemaker, Mrs. Barton was a graduate of York High School.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann B. Bell and her husband, Grady, of Chester and Marian B. Elliott and her husband, Wayne, of Charlottesville, Va.; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter M. Barton.

Mrs. Jane Owings Belk, 65
GREAT FALLS - The funeral for Mrs. Jane Owings Belk of 15801 State Hwy. 200 will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Paul Sellars and the Rev. Mike Sollers will officiate and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Belk, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at her home.
Born in Great Falls on June 23, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Roy Bailey Owings and Passie Fenton Ivester Owings. A member of Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church, Mrs. Belk graduated from Great Falls High School and received a degree in social services from Midland Center. She was employed as an LPN at Midland Center in Columbia and held devotional services at nursing homes.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. C.O. Belk Jr.; a son, Charles O. Belk III of Great Falls; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Sherrie Belk Broome.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, 26 Underwood Ave., Great Falls.

Ms. Barbara 'Bobbi' Helms Buckley
LOWRYS - The funeral for Ms. Barbara Jean "Bobbi" Helms Buckley of 1330 Gerard Court was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Saluda Street Church of God in Chester. The Rev. Robert Funderburk officiated and burial followed in Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill.
Ms. Buckley, 54, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her home.
Born in Fort Mill on Nov. 25, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Allen Helms and Flossie Viola Belk Helms. A member of Saluda Street Church of God, Ms. Buckley was employed with Springs Industries in Fort Mill for almost 20 years.
Survivors include twin daughters, Terri Lee Hunter of Clover and Jerri Lynn Hunter of Chester; a son, Danny Hunter of Fort Mill; two brothers, Gary Wayne Helms of Fort Lawn and Ronald William Helms of Indian Land; and a sister, Mary Ann Moss of Rock Hill.

Mr. Clarence L. Chambers, 56
CHESTER - The funeral for Mr. Clarence L. Chambers of 102 Branch St. will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at King's Funeral Home. Brother James Rouse will deliver the discourse and burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Chambers, 56, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Cleveland County, N.C., on July 21, 1948, he was a son of the late Arthur C. Chambers and Mary Lowe Chambers. A member of Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as a former steward and trustee of the church, Mr. Chambers was a 1967 graduate of Finley High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Weyerhaeuser Company of Chester.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie L. Pendergrass Chambers; a son, Dexter Pendergrass and his wife, Crystal, of Chester; three daughters, Michelle C. Davis and her husband, Cornell, of Chester, Sheana C. Jackson and her husband, Brandon, of Greenville and Ebony C. Chambers of the home; a brother, Walter James Chambers and his wife, Sheryl, of Great Falls; three sisters, Gladys C. Paulding, Janet L. Chambers and Kathy D. Chambers, all of Chester; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 102 Branch St., Chester.
Viewing will be today, Friday, from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.
