Joseph Whalen, 76, of Goose Creek died Monday, January 28, 2002 at a local hospital. Born March 5, 1925 in New York, New York. He was the son of William and Sadie Whalen (nee Gilmartin). He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II having served in Europe. His son, William Azaltovic, preceded him in death. Mr. Caughman died Friday, February 1, 2002. Born in Richland County, he was a son of Corrie Ward and the late Henry M. Caughman. He was a graduate of Lexington High School and The University of South Carolina with an A.B. Degree in Journalism and served as Staff Writer and Assistant Editor of The Gamecock Newspaper. Mr. Caughman was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1960, Who's Who in the South Southeast 1969-70 and Young Achievers in America in 1974. His community service included: President of the Lexington Jaycees in 1962-63 and was recipient of their Distinguished Service Award in 1967; the Lexington County Young Democrats including service as President from 1967-68; Treasurer of The Lexington County Democratic Party 1964-72; Lexington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors 1965-68; Charter Member of Lexington Rotary Club; Secretary of The Lexington County Board of Education 1974-77; Charter Member of the Lexington Optimist Club; Treasurer of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church Council 1976-78; President of the Lexington Lion's Club 1977-78; Secretary of South Carolina State Colleges Board of Trustees 1980-86; the Lander College Board of Trustees 1986-90; President of the Lexington County Arts Association 1981-82; Charter Member of the Lexington Cotillion; and on the Board of Directors and as Secretary of the Bridgepointe Homeowner's Association. Mr. Caughman was The Initial Science Department Chairman and a Classroom Teacher at Airport High School from 1960-63 as well as former Partner and Office Manager of Caughman's Meat Plant, Inc. in Lexington. He was most recently employed as a Procurement Manager in the Division of General Services for the S.C. Budget and Control Board.
Surviving are his wife, Lynda Shuler Caughman of West Columbia; his mother, of Lexington; daughter and son-in-law, Eliza and Caldwell Spence of Lexington; sons and daughters-in-law, Montford and Deborah Caughman and Christopher and Michelle Caughman, all of Lexington; Whit Spence and Logan, Mattison and Truman Caughman and Amy Chavis, all of Lexington; brother and sister-in-law, Robert J. and Mary Carole Caughman of Gilbert.

Warren E. Fair, 81, of Summerville, S.C., a retired textile company president, died Friday morning, February 1, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Fair was born February 10, 1920, in Jersey City, N.J., a son of Ralph and Florence Fair. He was a WWII Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1942-1946. He graduated from Bayonne High School, in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. He played American Legion baseball and was a long-time Little League baseball team manager. He was a former resident of Livingston, N.J., later retiring to Kiawah Island and Summerville, S.C. He was a member of the General William Moultrie Chapter (Chas., S.C.) of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member of the South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a member of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church, a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiawah/Seabrook Exchange Club, Kiawah Island Golf Club and a member of the American Legion on Kiawah. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a great friend to many.
Surviving are his three children, Susan E. Boykin of Summerville, S.C., Robert E. Fair of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nancy Harvey and son-in-law, Ross Harvey, of Yorba Linda, Calif., granddaughter, Alyssa Beth Harvey of California, brother, Ralph E. Fair of Marco Island, Fla., and a brother-in-law, Jack Powanda of Clearwater, Fla. He was pre-deceased in death by a sister, Joan Powanda and his beloved wife, Frances Fair.

She was secretary at Hutto Animal Hospital. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. She was preceded in death by a daughter Camilla Barry Hutto.
