Mrs. Hughes was born June 10, 1916 in Greenville, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James F. Taylor and Hattie Stiles Taylor. Mrs. Hughes was a Baptist and a homemaker.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her children, Billy Hughes, Charles Hughes, Tommy Hughes and Kenny Hughes all of Summerville, S.C.; a daughter, Jamie Benton and son, Randy Hughes both of Goose Creek, S.C.; daughters, Marilyn Gabbard and Linda Cribb and son, Robert Hughes all of North Charleston, S.C.; a son, Ronald Hughes of Greeneville, Tenn.; sisters, Juanita White and Jessie Shelton both of Easley, S.C.; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Hughes, a daughter, Carolyn Buswell and a son, Mark Hughes.

ORANGEBURG - Mr. Elmore Wilson Tumbleston, 82, of 410 Brewton St., Orangeburg, died Saturday morning at the Magnolias in Santee.
The funeral will be 11 AM Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Eutawville with the Rev. John Scott officiating.
Entombment will be at 2:30 PM at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.
Mr. Tumbleston was born in Yonges Island, S.C. a son of the late Samuel Allison Tumbleston and Hanna Louis Willis. He was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served on the USS Euryale (AS-22) Sub Tender in the Asiatic-South Pacific Theater. He was a retired Machine Shop Foreman from the U.S. Army Depot in Charleston.
Survivors are his wife, Frances Drose Tumbleston of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Ronny and Debbie Tumbleston of Eutawville; grandson, Rodney T. Tumbleston, Jr. of Orangeburg; granddaughter, Janice Jones of Snellville, Ga.; brothers, Julius Tumbleston of Charleston, and Louis Tumbleston of North Charleston; sisters, Dorothy Shulz of Knoxville, Tenn., Etta Mae Clark of Hananhan, and Lena Lowrey of North Charleston.

Born October 22, 1916, in Charleston, S.C., Mr. Christiansen was the son of the late Peter A. and Annie Stucke Christiansen. He was a retired shipfitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and formerly employed by Wells Fargo as a mail carrier. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II. Mr. Christiansen is a member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church.
Mr. Christiansen is survived by his wife of Charleston, a daughter Patricia Bozard of Charleston, two granddaughters, Kelly B. Newsom and Leslee B. Ames and three great-grandchildren.

SMITH, Nancy
CONWAY - Nancy Arthur Smith age 83, died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Kingston Nursing Center at Conway Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was born August 20, 1918 in Goldsboro, N.C. a daughter of the late Colonel Joseph Dogan and Sarah Michaux Arthur. She attended the Madeira School in McLean, Va. and graduated from Duke University in 1939, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Mrs. Smith moved to Conway in 1947 where she was an active community volunteer serving the Conway Community Concert Association, as a Board member of the Horry County Memorial Library; American Heart Association; Conway Hospital Ladies Auxiliary; and most significant to her as a member of the Bi-Racial Advisory Committee that helped plan and coordinate the peaceful integration of Conway High School with Whittemore High School. She also tutored in the Conway School System.
Mrs. Smith was always very active in her church. While in Conway, she served as Treasurer and vestry member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. When she moved to Murrells Inlet, she served on the vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pawleys Island, and was also an active volunteer at the Smith Medical Clinic, Camp Baskerville, Pawleys Island which was named for her and her late husband. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Robert Cathcart Smith and a brother: J. Dogan Arthur, Ill.
Surviving are one son: Robert C. Smith, Jr. of Conway; three daughters: Susanne Nash and Gretchen Smith both of Columbia and Rebecca Lovelace of Conway; two brothers: Macon M. Arthur of Litchfield and Robert M. Arthur, M.D., of Richmond, Va.; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Tripp Jeffords officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the residence of Mrs. Nancy Smith, 1212 Lakeland Drive.

Born December 18, 1925, in Jellico, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Oliver Stephen and Pauline Litton Disney. Mrs. Crowley was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wallace Crowley.
She is survived by her sons, Timothy S. "Tim" Crowley of Summerville, John Phillip Crowley of Charleston, and T. Chris Crowley of Greenwood; sisters, Meryle Disney Bulwinkle and Betty Disney Gibson; both of Hanahan; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews.

CRIST, Elizabeth
Elizabeth B. Crist passed away February 2, 2002, after suffering from several strokes and final heart failure at a local hospital. She was 91 years old, an Episcopalian and a member of the Cathedral of St. Philip.
Born in Charleston, S.C., she attended the College of Charleston and graduated with honors in 1929. After college she became involved in social welfare work in Charleston County and in 1933 she married James F. Crist, Vice President of South Carolina Power and Lights, who later became Executive Vice-President of the Southern Company.
Betty (as she was always known) was always very active as a member and volunteer of many organizations, local and national. She was a board member of the Girl Scouts of America, the Florence Crittenton Home for Girls, and the Garden Club of America. She served for many years with the United Trust Preservation Society and the Junior League in Atlanta and Charleston. She was a member of the Daughters of the King-St. Agnes Chapter, and a Life Member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. During her college years and after graduation, she was a member and active alumnus of the Tri Delta Sorority.
She and her husband (Jim) lived in Charleston, S.C., Birmingham, Ala., and Atlanta, following his career in the electric utility business in the southeast. They traveled extensively throughout the world because of his position in the electric power industry and a board director of numerous companies in the U.S.
Betty was an avid gardener, but her true avocation in her later years was oil painting. This hobby eventually evolved into a number of her paintings being sold at art shows and decorator auctions. Many were given as gifts for friends, family, and charitable organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her mother and father, Sadie and Charles Boykin, and her sister Mary Allen Ravenel all of Charleston, S.C.
She is survived by a son, James F. Crist, Jr., a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" C. Candler, and a son, George William "Bill" Crist, all of Atlanta and a brother, Charles V. Boykin of Charleston, S.C. She had five granddaughters, Elizabeth C. Malone, Jane Fontaine Crist, Courtney C. Rose of New Port Beach, Calif., Ashley C. Garrett and Lucy C. Murray of Atlanta. She also had ten great-grandchildren.
