LAKE CITY, S.C. - W. Darren Owens, 33, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, in a Lake City hospital.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m., Tuesday, in the William Hill Original Freewill Baptist Church. Burial directed by MORRIS FUNERAL HOME of Hemingway, will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Owens was born in Florence, S.C., a son of Wendell B. Owens and Sandra Williams Owens. He was retired from Wellman Industries as a Lab Technician.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta S. Owens of the home; daughter, Heather Louise Owens of the home; parents, Wendell B. Owens and Sandra W. Owens, both of Hemingway; two brothers, Danny Owens and Jamie Owens, both of Hemingway; sister, Kimberly Howell of Johnsonville; maternal grandmother, Freeda Williams of Hemingway; paternal grandmother, Mary Katrina Owens of Hemingway. PADGETT, Rita
Mrs. Rita Donahue Padgett, 87, of 101 Belger Street in Varnville, died Saturday night in a Hampton hospital after an extended illness.
Mrs. Padgett was born in Hampton County, December 14, 1914, a daughter of the late John and Laura Corbin Donahue. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Varnville. She was the widow of the late Sam D. Padgett.
Surviving are, one son, Perry Padgett of Varnville; one daughter, Kate P. Freeman of Varnville; and three sisters, Aline Moore of Beaufort, Margaret Adkins of Beaufort, and Virginia DeLoach of Varnville; there are six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Varnville, conducted by Rev. Tommy Kelly, Rev. Earl DeLoach, and Rev. Carolyn Matthews, with burial in the church cemetery directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton.
Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday, and Tuesday morning, until 10 a.m., when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

FINGER, III, James
James Avery Finger, of Wilmington, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, in a North Carolina hospital.
He was born in Charleston, S.C., April 29, 1914, the son of the late Dr. J. Avery and Alice Heidt Finger.
Dr. Finger received his college education at the University of South Carolina, earning a B.S. Degree, and his medical education at the Medical University of South Carolina, and a Master Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He was a career Commissioned Officer in the Regular Corp of the U.S. Public Health Service, retiring after 26 years of service with the rank of Medical Director. Dr. Finger served as Medical Officer aboard the USCG Alexander Hamilton during World War II and was among 83 survivors rescued from life boats by Icelandic fishing boats.
He served as Director of the Health Department in Richmond, Va., and later in Forsyth County, N.C. He was the Director of New Hanover County Health Department from 1976 to 1979. He was a member of the AMA, the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, Board Certified in Preventive Medicine and a member of the American College of Preventive Medicine. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Cape Fear Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Klein Finger, four children, James Aver Finger, IV, of Augusta, Ga., Lucille Powers of Walterboro, S.C., Alice Gillespie of Raleigh, N.C., and William Wells Finger of Wilmington, N.C., also eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by Dr. James D. Whetstone. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Private burial services will be held at a later date in South Carolina.

DARLINGTON - Jo Etta Lewellyn Griggs, 65, died, Friday, February 1, 2002, after a brief illness.
Graveside services were Sunday, February 3, 2002, in Byrd Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Born in Florence County, she had lived in Darlington for many years and recently moved to Lugoff. She was the wife of the late J.D. Griggs. She was a homemaker and attended Florence County Schools.
She is the daughter of Ellen Lewellyn of Timmonsville and the late Joseph Marion Lewellyn. Surviving are a son, James Hickson, Summerville, S.C., three daughters, Debra Jo McKenzie-Gwin, St. Stephens, Kay Trevino, Darlington, Lisa Jo Grooms, Lugoff, one brother, C.J. MOORESVILLE, N.C. - John White Self, 51, of Mooresville, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, at his residence following a long battle with brain cancer.
He was born on January 6, 1951, in Johnston, S.C. He was the son of the late Richard Columbus Self., Jr. He was a manager for General Electric Power Systems in Huntersville, N.C. He was employed with General Electric Hall of Fame in San Jose, Calif., for Outstanding Leadership. He graduated from Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C., and Clemson University. He was a member of the Clemson University Alumni Association; member of the United States Golf Association; member of the Point Lake & Golf Club; member of the Elfun Society; Ordained Deacon in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church; and member of the Lakeside Fellowship ARP Church in Mooresville.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Lindsey Self of Mooresville; his mother, Mary Ellen McDowell Self of Mooresville; daughter, Amanda Erin Self Watson and husband Chadwicke Brian Watson of Atlanta, Ga.; son, John McDowell Self of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Richard Earl Self and wife Carolyn Elliott Self of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and a niece, Jillian Maris Self.
Services will be conducted by Rev. John H. Dawson and Rev. Wayne Fraizer on Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at 11 a.m., at Lakeside Fellowship ARP Church in Mooresville.
The family will receive friends at the Meeting House at the Point Lake & Golf Club following the funeral service.

O'DONNELL, Catherine
Catherine Francis O'Donnell, 90, of Mt. Pleasant died on Saturday at a local hospital. Ms. O'Donnell was born in Pittston, Pa. on June 19, 1911, daughter of the late Alice and Hugh Lenahan. She is preceded in death by her husband, John J. O'Donnell. Catherine was a homemaker and a recognized amateur golfer.
Ms. O'Donnell is survived by one brother, Frank N. Lenahan of California; one son, Michael J. O'Donnell of Maine; and two daughters, A. Lenahan deRouin of Isle of Palms, South Carolina and Catherine F. Miller of California. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
All services for Catherine F. O'Donnell will be private. The O'Donnell family is being served by THE CREMATION CENTER OF CHARLESTON.

Frank Nelson Davis, 71, of Moncks Corner, S.C., a retired Deputy Sheriff for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Dept. and former Assistant Chief of the Moncks Corner Fire Department, died Sunday in a North Charleston hospital.

He was past President of the Moncks Corner Lions Club and Past Master of the Berkeley Lodge #269 AFM. He was a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was Assistant Fire Chief for 25 years. He was a graduate of Berkeley High School. He was a retired employee of Santee Cooper.
Surviving are, a daughter, Debbie D. Lindsay of Pineville, S.C.; a son, Frank N. Davis, II, of Moncks Corner; a brother, T. Reid Davis, Jr., of Moncks Corner; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
GRIFFITH, Madison
COTTAGEVILLE - Madison Howell Griffith, 88, a retired principal of Cottageville School and husband of Lillian Floyd Griffith, died Saturday in a local Charleston hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cottageville United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Wayne Major and Rev. Alfred Willis. Interment will be in Cottageville Cemetery, directed by the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Griffith was born September 7, 1913 in Cottageville, a son of the late Lawrence Henry Griffith and Florence Willis Griffith. He was a member of Cottageville United Methodist Church and was Superintendent of Sunday School for 20 years. He was a member of Round Lodge #270 and had just received his 60 year pin. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston, Class of 1935 and was a Principal of Cottageville School for 40 years. He was a member of the S.C. Education Association.
Surviving besides his wife, are: daughter and son-in-law, Jeannette Griffith Buddin Nepivoda and Tony Nepivoda of Jacksonville, Fla., daughter and son-in-law, Faye Howell Griffith Young and Bobby Young of Cottageville, four grandsons and their wives, Jay and Christy Buddin of Bishopville, Todd and Tracey Buddin of North Charleston, Rob Young of Edisto Beach and Kevin and Tina Young of Cottageville, six great-grandchildren, Jack, Madison, Griff and Drew Buddin and Hallie and Payton Young.

DES ARC, ARK. - Mrs. Gaynell Elizabeth Dills Reed, 87, died at her residence Monday, February 4, 2002.
Mrs. Reed was born in Rockingham, Georgia, on February 27, 1914 a daughter of the late Judson Jordan and Mrs. Jewel Emily Farmer Dills. She moved to New Jersey as a child and lived there for fifty years before moving to Georgetown in 1977. She was a member of the Messiah Baptist Church in Georgetown. Her husband, the late Howard Carlton Reed died in 1979. Mrs. Reed moved to Arkansas in 1998 to make her home with her daughter.
Surviving are: one brother, C. Bernard Dills of New Mexico; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2002 in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. J.M. Kirkland. Burial will follow under the direction of the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF THE MAYER FUNERAL HOME.

Mrs. Shipes, 74, died Tuesday in St. Eugene Medical Center.
Born in Hampton County, January 30, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Annie Lightsey. She was the widow of Heyward Shipes and was a member of the Charleston Assembly of God.
Survivors include her daughters, Sandra E. Thompson of Dillon and Susan and Dale Spence of Tignal, Ga.; grandchildren, Christie and Keith Humphrey of Floyd Dale, Jack "Jay" Thompson of Florence, and Penny Rippy of Tignal, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Louise Shipes.
SEIGLER, James
James Arthur Seigler, 16, of North Charleston, died Monday evening in a local hospital as the result of an auto accident. The memorial service will be conducted 1:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, February 9, 2002 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL.
James was born March 11, 1985 in Augusta, Georgia the son of Sandra Renew Seigler and Wade A. Seigler, both of North Charleston. He was a sophomore at Ft. Dorchester High School where he was active in the Air Force JROTC and the Sabre Drill Team.
In addition to his mother and father, James is survived by his sister, Nikki Seigler of North Charleston; his paternal grandparents, John F. and Evelyn Seigler, Jr. of Augusta, Ga.; his maternal grandfather, James F. (Loretta) Renew, Sr. of Franklin, Ky. and his maternal grandmother, Barbara (Larry) Hudson of Augusta, Ga. and his paternal great-grandfather, John F. Seigler, Sr. of Augusta, Ga. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and classmates also survive.

Mr. Rickenbaker was born June 5, 1920 in Jedburg, South Carolina, a son of the late Pinckney Lewis Rickenbaker and Lilly Felder Rickenbaker. He was a graduate of Summerville High School. He was a retired Marine Machinist with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jedburg.
