SHIRLEY, William
William Thomas Shirley, age 76, a retired Professor of History and veteran of WWII, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002 in Charleston, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Hunter Shirley, six children, 12 grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, numerous friends and students. Loved and admired by many for his contributions to the community, he will be remembered for touching the lives of those he knew with his intelligence, humor and compassion.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, February 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road SW, Roanoke, Va. 24015, with Reverend Tupper Garden officiating.

LOCKWOOD, Anne
Mrs. Anne McLeod Gelzer Lockwood died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at her home. Mrs. Lockwood, 91, was born in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of William Porcher Gelzer and Annie Mikell Frampton Gelzer. She was the widow of A. Carleton Lockwood.
Mrs. Lockwood was first honor graduate of Memminger High School and recipient of the Mitchell Medal. She graduated from Rice Business College and attended the College of Charleston. She served as secretary to the Commandant of the Sixth Naval District in Charleston during World War II. She later retired as head of the Medical Records Transcription Department at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Charleston. Mrs. Lockwood was a former member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina and the Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church.
Private graveside services were conducted Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at Summerville Cemetery.
Mrs. Lockwood is survived by a son, John C. Lockwood of Virginia; a daughter, Nancy L. Chalmers of Charleston, S.C.; twin granddaughters, Marguerite Mikell Chalmers and Anne Porcher Chalmers of Charleston, S.C.; several nieces and a nephew.

Mr. Merritt was born Feb. 27, 1916 in Williston, S.C., a son of Franklin Thomas Merritt and Katherine Jardin League Merritt. Mr. Merritt is a member of the First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner where he taught the men's Sunday school class and was a former chairman of the Board of Deacons. Mr. Merritt was an avid
hunter and fisherman. Prior to his employment for Berkeley County he worked for Flack Jones Lumber Co. of Summerville for many years. Mr. Merritt is a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a graduate of Williston-Elko High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Merritt Montgomery.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise Irvin Merritt; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Lucille and Ron Thompson of Herriman, Tenn.; a son and a daughter-in-law, F. Logan and Ann Collins Merritt of Columbia; a grandson, Mark Francis Merritt of Sylva, N.C.; and two nieces, Martha Kay Montgomery Hunt and Ann Montgomery Morrow both of Bishopville.

He was a member of the W.O.W, the Vance Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. Mr. Boyd was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holly Hill.

Mrs. Badgley attended schools in Iowa. She was an avid gardener and cookbook collector and also a homemaker.

George Keith "Georgie" Dean, 34, of Summerville, husband of Tamatha Jean Dean died Thursday in a North Charleston hospital.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2002 at 2 o'clock in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Summerville. Entombment will be in Plantation Memorial Gardens, Moncks Corner.

Mr. Dean was born on February 11, 1967 in Seaford, Delaware, a son of the late George H. Dean and Mary Virginia Hastings Dean. He attended Seaford High School in Seaford, Delaware. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife; 2 sons: Timothy Michael Dean and Dylan Shayne Dean both of Summerville; sister: Mary Elizabeth Smith of Laurel, Delaware; nephew: James Gullett of Seaford, Delaware; several nieces, nephews, other family and his friend "Jedi."
