Winston (Winkie) Baron Smith, 62, Walterboro, S.C., died Saturday, February 9, 2002, at his home after a short illness.
Born May 26, 1939, in Grays, S.C., the son of the late Walker Smith, Sr., and the late Idell Clifton Smith. He was a heavy equipment and diesel mechanic.
Survivors include one son, Barry Smith, Green Pond, S.C., three daughters, Vickie S. Padgett, Point South, S.C., Anita S. Mixson, Sheldon, S.C., Hope S. Cooper, Beaufort, S.C. Exa Thomas Fowler of Charleston, died Saturday, February 9, 2002, in a local hospital. Services will be 11 a.m., on Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Born in Georgetown County, she was a daughter of the late Henry B. and Ida Catherine Nelson Thomas. Mrs. Fowler was retired from Charleston County School District as an elementary teacher, member of the Charleston County Teachers Association and a member of West Ashley Church of God.
Surviving are daughters, Cathy Teasley and her husband Jimmie of West Ashley, Angela Owens and her husband Thomas of Virginia; son, Marshall K. Fowler, and his wife Mary of Maui, Hawaii; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Lowcountry Alzheimers Association, P.O. She is survived by her husband of North Charleston, S.C.; two sons, John Harvey Bozard of Eutawville, S.C., and Charles Everett Bozard of Johns Island; one brother, Thomas B. Hogan, Jr., of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Mara Dee Bates, Kelly B. Newsom, Traci Pauls and Leslee Ames; and six great-grandchildren.
WARREN, Myrtle
On February 8, 2002, Myrtle Merchant Warren joined her beloved husband, Otto in heaven. Mrs. Warren was a devoted wife and loving mother. A woman of faith, dignity and courage, she served her church, West End Baptist in various capacities until failing health prevented her from doing so. She took great pride in her daughters and tried to instill in them those values that she held so dear, honesty, compassion, and faith. She was a life long resident of Newberry.
Mrs. Warren was born on November 17, 1912 in the Bush River Community of Newberry County, a daughter of the late George W. and Lessie Baird Merchant. She was predeceased by her husband Irvin Otto Warren and an infant son, and also by her brothers, Raymond Merchant and Manning Merchant and her sisters, Helen Longshore, Alma Crowder, and Naomi Hamm. She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Sherman Cohn of Charleston, Betty and N. Jackson Thacker of Greenville, and Faye and George Hawkins of Newberry: five grandchildren, Dr. Gary Hawkins, Barry Cohn, Chad Hawkins, Wendy Thacker, and Michael Thacker; one great-grandchild, Bennett Hawkins; two brothers, Ervin Merchant and Norris Merchant both of Kinards; and one sister, Dallas Brazell of Smyrna, Tenn.
Funeral services for Myrtle Merchant Warren will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Deeter and the Rev. Henry Brandt. The casket will be placed in the church at 10:00 a.m. Monday. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Thomas T. Gaulden, III, 58 of West Columbia, S.C. died Sunday, February 10, 2002 at a hospital in Charleston, S.C. Born August 19, 1943 in Charleston, S.C. he was the son of Thomas T. Gaulden, Jr. and Jessie D. Gaulden (nee Herndon). Mr. Gaulden was a pipefitter at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and was a friend of Bill W. He was an artist and used watercolors to paint some of his favorite Charleston scenes. He is survived by two son: Thomas T. Gaulden of Pennsylvania, and Adam Gaulden, of North Charleston, S.C.; daughter Michele Gaulden of New Hampshire; brother Sydney Gaulden of West Cola., S.C.; sister, Patti Gaulden Santoso of Minnesota; grandchildren. Mrs. McKissick was born February 10, 1915 in Florence County, S.C. the daughter of Roland and Mary Jane Bone Ard. She was a retired cook at the Midland Park Elementary School lunchroom and had worked at the former Schooltime Frock Company. She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Hyman and attended North Palm Ministry Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dolan W. Hanna in 1943, her second husband, Myrt O. McKissick in 1996 as well as a son, Ira John Hanna, a sister, Annie Matthews, and a brother, Arthur Ard.
Surviving are her three daughters and sons-in-law, Eunice (Samuel) Bateman of Florence, S.C., Beatrice (Monroe) Stone and Beula (Franklin) Spell, both of North Charleston. Eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter also survive. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Florence Altman of Murrell's Inlet, S.C., her step sons, Burnette (Jennifer) McKissick and O'Neal (Merlene) McKissick, both of Columbia, S.C., four step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

MICK, Kenneth
Kenneth R. Mick, "KR", of Goose Creek, died suddenly on February 7, 2002. He was born November 14, 1942 in Plattsburg, Missouri. He was 59 years old. He is survived by his 3 brothers and 5 sisters; Marion, Denny, Robert, Helen, Deloris, Carolyn, Elizabeth, and Sharon. He is also survived by Wanda J. Mick, his former wife of 30 years, nephew/son, James E. Reel, seven step-children, and his grandchildren, Kristina, Andy, Ashley, Brittany, Dalton, and Timothy.
KR was in the minesweeping division in the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he received many awards, etc. He had been presented the Meritorious Unit Commendation from the Secretary of the Navy. He retired as a Master Chief Boatswains Mate. During his life, he served as Game Warden, an avid deer hunter, and had won many tournaments in bass fishing. He will be sadly missed by his family.

He was a Captain in the US Army Air Corp. and served in W.W. II. He was a graduate of Rutgers University in N.J. He was a watercolor artist and President of the Charleston Artist Guild for two years. He was an avid fisherman and tennis player at Seabrook Island.
Surviving are his wife of Johns Island, S.C.; 2 daughters: Gale E. Soltish of Johns Island, S.C. and Jan McLaren of Oakhurst, N.J.; 4 granddaughters: Tracy Soltish, Katie McLaren, Allison McLaren and Kackie McLaren.

Muriel Lewis "BeBe" Freeman, 79, of Moore St., Hanahan, S.C., died Sunday in a Summerville hospital.

Mrs. Freeman was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Mullins, S.C., a daughter of Solan B. Lewis, Sr., and Ethel Rogers Lewis. She is the widow of William C. Freeman, Sr. She is a member of the Salvation Army Church. She was a member of Chapter 250 OES.
Surviving are, Joette Rullman of Ladson; three sons, William C. "Billy" Freeman of Andrews, Johnson B. Frank Kozma, 90, of Charleston, died Saturday, February 9, 2002 at a local hospital. He was born in Rome, N.Y. to Leon and Victoria Gorskowski Kozma. He was a graduate of Rensselaer Poly-Tech Institute and a retired chemical engineer with Westvaco after 42 years. Frank was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a past member of the German Friendly Society, a life member of the American Chemical Society and a longtime patron of the Footlight Players. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Powers Kozma, three sons, Frank Kozma, Jr. of Arlington, Tex., John P. Kozma of Charleston, James L. Kozma of Baltimore, Md., and a grandson, Blake Celestian. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Celestian last year. Augustus McDonald Flood, Jr., 82, of Bonneau, a retired assistant chief of executive affairs with the South Carolina Wildlife Department, died Monday at a Charleston hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. Burial, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Flood was born July 11, 1919, at John's Island, S.C., a son of Augustus McDonald Flood, Sr., and Ida Robertson Flood. He was a former member of Moncks Corner Town Council, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moncks Corner Lions Club and Berkeley Masonic Lodge #269 AFM. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. He graduated from Charleston High School, and on March 15, 1936, he went to work for the S.C. Wildlife Department as the one and only game warden for five counties.
Mr. Flood left the wildlife department when the United States entered World War II and he was drafted into the Army. He spent the next five years with an amphibious landing group and was awarded the Army Silver Star for service in both the European and Pacific theaters. He returned home in October of 1945.
Long before the wildlife department had their trademark green trucks, a game warden's work was done on horseback. Mr. Flood has loved horses since childhood, a passion he claims to have inherited from his father. At 11 years old, he won a silver cup at the state steeplechase championships. He's known as Mr. Wildlife in this state. He was one of the firsts, and he knew it all.
Mr. Flood has won numerous awards, including the 1975 Wildlife Conservationist of the Year, and has managed to become somewhat of a legend. All over the state, and all over the world, people have recognized the man in the Stetson hat. Mr. Flood retired in 1983.
Surviving are his wife, Maude Bradwell Flood of Bonneau; son, Augustus M. Flood, III, of Moncks Corner; two daughters, Claudette Flood McCall of Pinopolis, Angela Flood Carter of Lyman; two sons-in-law, Bill McCall of Pinopolis, R. Carter Smith of Lyman; brother, James M. Flood of Goose Creek; two sisters, Margaret F. Higdon of Charleston, Nell F. Brown of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Augustus McDonald Flood, IV, Jennifer Lee McCall, William Drayton McCall, John Bradwell McCall, R. Carter Smith, Sarah Bradwell Smith, Lisa Rutland Winningham and Roger Dane Rutland; six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday evening. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill McCall of Pinopolis, S.C.
