DOUGHERTY, Francis
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of February 13, 2002, Francis Stearns Dougherty, husband of Louise Ravenel Dougherty. Residence, Charleston, S.C. Mr. Dougherty was born November 9, 1921, in Austin, Minn., the son of William Park Dougherty and Marian Stearns Dougherty. In his youth he became an Eagle Scout and played trombone in the high school dance band. He sang in Carnegie Hall twice with the Dartmouth Glee Club and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1945, where he was captain of the gymnastics team. During World War II, he served on a U.S. Navy minesweeper, which brought him to Charleston. In 1946, he married Julia Vincent Ravenel. He learned the import/export business in New York City.
After returning to Naval Duty for the Korean Conflict, he established in Charleston his own import/export enterprise in 1953. This developed into Dougherty Marine Products, a wholesale distributor of accessories for motorboats, which served boat dealers throughout the Southeast. In 1968 Dougherty Maine was named Boat & Motor Dealers Distributor of the Year. He served as President of the National Marine Distributors Association.
In the 1970's, at a time when the Charleston Opera Company was suffering financial difficulties, he became president of the organization. Over the next five years, under his leadership the company brought to Charleston audiences, "Carmen," "Tosca," "The Mikado," "Il Trovatore," "Aida," "Samson and Delilah," "der Fledermaus," "The Merry Widow," "Trail By Jury" and others.
He volunteered for many civic efforts including adult literacy, Big Brother, HELP, and SCORE. He was an avid bridge player, golfer and dancer. He was a master gardener, a fund raiser with the Lowcountry Girl Scouts and a member of the following organizations, the Sertoma Club, the Agricultural Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Country Club of Charleston, the South Carolina Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, the Rotary Club of Charleston, Society of Preservation of Spirituals, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, a founding member of the Charleston Mens Chorus.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, S.C.; one son, Park R. Dougherty of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Renée D. Daniel of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Dr. Frances D. Snoy of Poolesville, Md., six step-children, Suzanne Ravenel, Arthur Ravenel, III, Renée Brockinton, Eva Ravenel, William Ravenel, Thomas Ravenel, five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

PEAGLER, Eva
Eva Oliver Peagler, 77, died on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 13, 2002, after a brief illness. Her memorial service will be conducted at 11 o'clock, Saturday morning, February 16, 2002, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Peagler was born April 25, 1924, in Timmonsville, S.C., a daughter of the late John Wesley Oliver, Sr., and Victoria Jolly Oliver. A graduate of Cross High School, she established and served as the first librarian at Midland Park Elementary School in North Charleston. She was a lifetime member of the South Carolina P.T.A. and Ridgeville Southern Methodist Church. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the mountains.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis Wesley Peagler, Sr., with whom she would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in June. Also surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Belma Kay (Howard C.) McKissick of Summerville, Bonnie (Jim) Clark of North Charleston; her son and daughter-in-law, Curtis W. (Luella) Peagler, Jr., of Ridgeville; her four grandchildren, Curtis W. Peagler, III, John W. Peagler, Tamara Dawn Harris and Samuel C. Ray. Her sister, Leola Singletary of Summerville and her brothers, Rudolph Oliver of Tullahoma, Tenn., David Oliver of Pinopolis, S.C., and Herbert Oliver of Beaumont, Texas, also survive.

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. - Margaret Ward Branham Cain, 61, widow of Jerry D. Cain, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the Kershaw County Medical Center.
Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Geneva Watkins Ward and the late John W. Ward.
Mrs. Cain was a Baptist and a retired nurse.
Surviving are her mother of Bishopville; three daughters, Rose Blackwell of Bishopville, Becky Jenkinson of Lugoff, and Theresa Walters of Folly Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Tracey Gladden, Bobby Blackwell, Anna Jenkinson and Will Jenkinson.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. T. W. Mitchell officiating.
Burial will be in the Piedmont Cemetery.

Mr. McBride was born May 31, 1931, in Burlington, N.C., the son of the late Robert Lee McBride and Ethel Margaret Hipp McBride. Mr. McBride was a member of United Church of Christ. He was a Veteran in the United States Navy serving in the Vietnam War and receiving many awards during his career to include the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Certificate (Third Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal, and a member of L. Mendel Rivers Branch #50 Fleet Reserve Association. He was a former member of Carolina Masonic Lodge #375 A.F.M. and presently a member of Vance Lodge A.F.M., S.C., Omar Temple and the Omar "Imps" in Florence, S.C.
He is survived by his wife of Eutawville, S.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron (Sue) McBride of Florence, S.C., Tim (Joy) McBride of Charleston, S.C., Wayne McBride of Charleston, S.C., and Wayne (Cheryl) Flowers of Summerville, S.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan (Randy) Pulley of Goose Creek, S.C., and Linda (Randy) Knight of North Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Hilda Shaver of Salisbury, N.C.; ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

TISDALE, Cleo
ANDREWS - Cleo Taylor Tisdale, 81, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, in a Charleston hospital.
Mrs. Tisdale was born in Warsaw Community of Williamsburg County on July 14, 1920, a daughter of the late John Wesley Taylor and Martha Elizabeth Howard Taylor. She was a member of Piney Forest Baptist Church and the church Senior Sunday School Class.
Surviving are, a brother, Wilson J. Taylor of Andrews; a sister, Carrie T. Browder of St. Stephen; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Tisdale was predeceased by her husband, J. Ezechiel Tisdale; a brother, Daniel W. Taylor; and a sister, Dorothy Taylor.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning, February 16, 2002, at 11 o'clock in Piney Forest Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. James L. May. Burial will follow in Piney Forest Cemetery under the direction of the Andrews Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME.
The family will receive friends at the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the committal service.
THOMAS, Lula
ESTILL - Mrs. Lula Mae Williams Thomas, 91, widow of the late William Claude Thomas, died Wednesday afternoon in the Harper Convalescent Home in Estill, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Hampton County, February 3, 1911, a daughter of the late Alfew Holloway Williams and Annie Laurie Cox Williams. She was a retired Merchant, and operated Thomas Grocery Store in Gifford for many years. She was a member of the Lawtonville Baptist Church in Estill, where she was a Sunday School Teacher and active with the Womens Missionary Union. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are, son and daughter-in-law, Donald Edward and Barbara Everett Thomas of Estill; one sister, Gladys W. Crapse of Estill; two granddaughters and husbands, Suzanne and Dicky DeLoache, and Claudia and Todd Miller; two great-grandsons, Brandon and Tyler. Mrs. Thomas was pre-deceased in death by two brothers, James Monroe Williams and Cleveland Woodrow Williams.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Friday, in the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, conducted by Rev. Jamie Norris, Lanny Brisendine, and Bobby Stone, directed by the Estill Chapel of PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME. Friends may call at the Chapel in Estill from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, and Friday morning prior to services.
