Mrs. Freda Simon Friedman, 91, of Savannah, Ga., died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at her residence.
She was born in Charleston, S.C. and moved to Savannah, Ga. in 1953. She was the widow of Anchel Friedman.
She was a retired registered nurse, having worked at Memorial Medical Health University, and she was a graduate of the Medical College of Nursing in 1931, and a member of Congregation Agudath Achim Synagogue.
She was past president of the Sisterhood, having served 3 terms as president, and voted the Woman of Valor in the year 2001, past president of the Shalom Group and was very active on the Mitzvah Committee.
She is survived by 2 sons, Alvin H. White and his wife Evelyn of Haddonfield, N.J.; and Fredric S. White of Marietta, Ga.; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home-Hodgson Memorial Chapel, with Rabbi Robert Wolkoff, officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanu-el Cemetery in Charleston, S.C. at 3 p.m. Friday.
The family will sit Shiva in Charleston, S.C.

WALTERBORO - Mr. George William Hiers, 56, of 500 Bee Drive died Wednesday at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Hiers was born in Colleton County, a son of the late VonLehe Vernon Hiers and Vivian Hunt Hiers Powell. He was a retired painter with J.B. Floyd painting contractors.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Bell Hiers, sons, Allen Hiers, David Hiers, Bryan Hiers, and Chris Hiers, all of Walterboro, and Stevie Hiers and Stoney Hiers, both of Charleston, a daughter, Stephanie Hiers of Walterboro, two sisters, Shirley Riley of Gosport, Indiana and Brenda Valentine of Walterboro, a half brother, Dan Morrall of Charleston, a half sister, Cindy Lenoir of Johns Island, and eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Elizabeth Farmer Duvall, age 97, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2002 after a long illness. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2002 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Cheraw, S.C., with interment following in Old St. David's Cemetery. Mrs. Duvall was born in Allendale, S.C., a daughter of Charles Baring Farmer and Ida Miller Farmer. Devoted to her family, she was a homemaker and a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Altar Guild.
She is survived by her sons, Henry (Hal) Powe Duvall and Charles Farmer Duvall, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry (Hal) Powe Duvall and her daughter, Elizabeth Baring Duvall Eubanks.

MULLINS - Mrs. Gertrude Harrelson Jones, 83, devoted widow of Jessie Thomas "J.T." Jones, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 23, at Macedonia United Methodist Church Prayer Chapel, with Rev. Paul Frey and Rev. Lewis McCormick officiating. Burial will follow in Millers United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by COX-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Jones was born January 15, 1919, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Charles Hugh Harrelson and the late Maggie Norton Harrelson. Mrs. Jones was retired from the Mullins United Way, where she received two awards for community service. Mrs. Jones was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Stith Sunday School Class and the Celia Perrit Circle.
Surviving Mrs. Jones are, her children, Susan Jones of Johns Island, Charles Jones of Durham, N.C., and Mike Jones of Panama City, Fla.; three grandchildren, Michelle Carleton and Karen Jones, both of Panama City, Fla., and Nickolas Jones of Durham, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Jessie and Jacob Carleton; two sisters, Betty Harrelson and Ina Lewis, both of Mullins; and a brother-in-law, Caliph Lewis of Mullins.
Mrs. Jones was predeceased by a brother, Louis Harrelson.

He was the retired owner/operator of James Island Piggly Wiggly.
He is survived by his wife of James Island; one son, Vann J. Arnold Shapiro, 77, died on the morning of Monday, February 18, 2002 at his home on Isle of Palms. Private services, with full military honors, have been arranged at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Arrangements were made at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Shapiro was a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He retired as a Major after 20 years service in the United States Air Force during which he served in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He later retired from the Social Security Administration and in 1988 moved to the Isle of Palms.
A generous and loving husband, father, and brother, he will be greatly missed by his wife of 38 years, Vonna Laura Shapiro; his son and daughter-in-law, Captain Jack Davis (Jan) Shapiro, USA, of Savannah, Ga.; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzan (Keith) LoCascio of Greenville, S.C.; and his sister and brother-in-law, Lillian (William) Bercowitz of Belleaire Bluffs, Fla.

Lisa Lynn Anania, 42, died on the evening of Thursday, February 21, 2002, at her home in Goose Creek. Her memorial service will be conducted, 1 o'clock, Monday afternoon, in Crossroads Community Church, 505 Gahagan Road, Summerville. Arrangements were made at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL.Lisa was born on March 12, 1959, in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Julia Marconi Fumarol of Boerne, Texas, and the late Peter Fumarol. She was a graduate of the paralegal program at Trident Technical College and was a substitute teacher for Berkeley County Schools. Lisa was active in numerous community activities including Chairperson for Corporate Sponsorship for the "Relay for Life" cancer fund a volunteer at Lowcountry Crisis Pregnancy, served as the Republican Party precinct president in Goose Creek, S.C., and served as a guardian ad litem.In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Nicholas M. Anania, Jr.; her two sons, Justin Totora and Chase Anania; her daughters, Nicole Totora, Danielle Kellett and Morgan Hoffman, all of Goose Creek. Her grandson, Carson Camacho and two sisters, Michelle Gash of Canton, Ohio, and Rene' Jones of Boerne, Texas also survive.Memorials are suggested to Crossroads Community Church, 505 Gahagan Road, Summerville, S.C. 29485.
