Mrs. Berger was born August 12, 1918, in Camden, N.J., the daughter of George D. Smith and Elizabeth Moore Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Henry of Mims, Fla., Barbara A. Crews of James Island and Ellen Etter of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, Gordon Kaegel of Belmaur, N.J., and Samuel L. Berger, Jr., of Burlington Township, N.J.; one sister, Florence Moore of Collingswood, N.J.; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

On the evening of Wednesday, February 27, 2002, Virginia Godfrey Nolte, wife of Alvin T. Nolte, residence, Charleston, S.C., departed this life to be with our God. Mrs. Nolte was born January 2, 1919, in Charleston, the fifth of nine children of Thomas Benjamin Godfrey and Ella Knox Godfrey. She was an active, life-time member of Rutledge Memorial Baptist Church (formerly Rutledge Avenue Baptist Church in downtown Charleston), where she had held many positions including Sunday school teacher, Training Union leader, Dirctor of the WMU, and member of the Rutledge Rejoicers and senior choir. She graduated from Memminger High School and attended Rice Business College. She then worked at the Old Cigar Factory and retired as a Management Analyst from the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Stephen G. Nolte of Kannapolis, N.C., and Mark A. Nolte of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren, Christa Nolte of Summerville, S.C., Thomas, Taylor, and Nicholas Nolte, all of Kannapolis, N.C., and Mark Jr. and Jordan Nolte, both of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Moultrie R. Godfrey of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Dorothy E. Godfrey, Frances G. Knight and Letha J. Godfrey all of Charleston, S.C.

WEIK, Lillie
Lillie Varner Ferrer Weik, 70, of St. Johns Bethel Road, Moncks Corner, S.C., an assistant locksmith and co-owner of Weik's Locksmith Service, died Tuesday in a Charleston hospital.

Mrs. Weik was born July 4, 1931, in Moncks Corner, S.C., a daughter of John Varner and Martha Burbage Varner. She was a council member of the Wassamassaw Indian Tribe and a foster parent. She was a member of Gateway Community Church.

MARTIN, Agnes
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Agnes Elizabeth Guerry Martin, of Charlotte, N.C., wife of the late Monroe W. Martin, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Mrs. Martin was born on May 12, 1914, in Kingstree, S.C., the oldest daughter of the late Fred P. Guerry and Katherine Ilderton Guerry.
She attended Columbia College, Business College of Charleston, and Queens Business College. She was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, and the Couples Fellowship Sunday School Class. Until recently, she was an active and vital member of General James H. Lane United Daughters of the Confederacy in Charlotte. Mrs. Martin has also held many state offices of the North Carolina United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Martin had a love of Southern Heritage. When you thought of Agnes, the first vision that springs to mind is always "the Southern Lady," precise, dignified and respected by everyone, and respectful to everyone. She lived by the Golden Rule. Mrs. Martin was an original member of the Olde Foxcroft Garden Club, and had lived in her Ferncliff Road home for over 40 years.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her daughter, Monice Martin Brockington, of Charlotte, N.C.; her granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Brockington, of Charlotte, N.C. and Charleston, S.C., where she is a senior at the College of Charleston; her brother, Fred Guerry, and his wife Dot, of Kingstree, S.C.; two nephews, Joseph B. Felton, and his wife, Julie, and James E. Felton, and family, all of Augusta, Ga. She is also survived by several grand-nephews and grand-neices.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2002, at Meyers Park United Methodist Church, 1020 Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C., with the Reverend William E. Roth officiating. Mrs. Martin will be laid to rest at 4 p.m. on Friday in the family plot in Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree, S.C.

YEMASSEE - JoAnn B. Shepherd, 62, died February 28, 2002, in a Charleston hospital.
The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, in New Covenent Fellowship Ministries in Green Pond. Burial will follow in the Heyward Cemetery.
Mrs. Shepherd was born in Ritter, a daughter of the late Joseph and Gladys Williams. She received her education in both South Carolina and Maryland and worked at hospitals and nursing homes in the Baltimore area. She was married to Alex Shepherd, Jr. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Jefferson, Michele Gilliam Williams and Christle Sheppard all of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Betty Copeland of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Thurmon Williams of Baltimore, Md. and Robert Williams of Portsmouth, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Pauline Treadway Soles, 81, of 126 E. Hughes Circle, Florence, S.C., died Wednesday afternoon, February 27, 2002, at her residence after an illness.
Mrs. Soles was born in Conway, S.C. a daughter of the late Walter James and Florida McCall Treadway. A former resident of Marion, S.C., she had resided in Florence for over 50 years. She was employed by Chase Oil Co. in the Amoco Food Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sammie Soles, Sr. and by a daughter, Earline Walters and by a son, Donnie Laverne Soles.
Surviving are 4 daughters, Alice Carolyn Soles, Linda Matthews and Elizabeth Rogers all of Florence, S.C. and Jean (Horace) Cordray of Ravenel, S.C.; 3 sons, Sammie Soles, Jr., Legrand David "Crock" Soles and Paul Treadway (Elizabeth) Soles all of Florence, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

CONWAY - Pearlie M. Jacobs, age 86, of Magrath Ave., died Friday, March 1, 2002, at his residence following an illness.Mr. Jacobs was born in Loris, a son of the late John Clinton and Cora Faircloth Jacobs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway and a former Deacon and member of the Annex Bible Class. Mr. Jacobs was a farmer in the Pleasant Grove Church Community and was a member, and deacon, of Pleasant Grove Church. He began selling insurance with Liberty Life Insurance Company in 1941, helped sell stock and insurance with Investment Life & Trust Company. Mr. Jacobs was owner and operator of Pearlie Jacobs Insurance Agency in Conway and sold insurance for 61 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially quail hunting. Mr. Jacobs was a member of Gunters Island Hunting Club and Campfield Hunting Club. He was also a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Masonic Loge #65 AFM, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Omar Temple of the Shrine of Charleston. Funeral services will be held for Mr. George St. Claire Frye, of Columbia, on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at 3 o'clock p.m. at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 1200 Fontaine Place, Columbia. Visitations will be on Saturday, March 2, 2002, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. George Arthur Frye, 400 Meadowbury Drive, Columbia.Born on October 23, 1938, in Boston, Mass., Mr. Frye was the only son of Arthur Samuel Frye and Alma Lee Hutchinson Frye, both of whom are deceased. A sister died shortly after birth. He spent many summers during his childhood years at Martha's Vineyard on Cape Cod, Mass. George passed into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 26, 2002. At the time of his death, he resided at Forest Oaks Apartments, 3111 Two Notch Road.Mr. Frye had been married to the former Willease Story. To this union were born four children, George Arthur Frye, of Columbia; Walter Dakar Frye, of Summit, N.J.; Rana Carolyn Frye O'Bryant, of North Augusta, S.C.; Zaria Willease Frye O'Bryant, of Columbia. He was also the father of Kenton L. Robinson, of Charleston; and the adopted father of April Sanders, of Columbia; and Robin, Sean, and Ivah Robinson, and Inga R. Rose, of Charleston. He was a member of the extended families of Mrs. Martha (Helen) Robinson, of Charleston, and Mr. William "Bill" Green, of Columbia.Mr. Frye was a graduate of Boston English High School that, at the time, was the oldest high school in Mass. He was a 1967 graduate of Friendship Junior College of Rock Hill, S.C. and a 1969 graduate of Benedict College. He did further study at the Citadel of Charleston, S.C. Mr. Frye taught art in public schools of Richland, Charleston and Hampton Counties. Most recently he was a substitute teacher in Richland School District One.George was a talented artist, who was commissioned to create works of art for churches, organizations and individuals throughout South Carolina.He is survived by his children, 18 grandchildren, numerous relatives in Monck's Corner and Greenville, S.C.; Boston and Martha's Vineyard, Mass. and La Fayette, Ala.; two brother-in-laws, Eddie Story (Lillie Mae) of LaFayette, Ala. and Johnny B. Story of Fayetteville, N.C.; sister-in-law Mary Story Ford (Bennie); and a host of friends.
