JOHNSON, Justina
MORGANTON, N.C. - A. Justina Johnson, of Lenoir, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at Shytle House, Hospice of Burke County after a brief illness. She was 83.Born Almire Justina Bernard on June 10, 1918 in Oriente Province, town of Ceiba Hueca, Cuba, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Joseph Babin Bernard, a sugar plantation manager, and Sarah Justina Safford. After a childhood spent in Cuba, she returned with her family to Lenoir where she attended Davenport School and graduated from Lenoir High School in 1935. She attended the University of North Carolina Women's College in Greensboro and graduated in 1939.After college, Mrs. Johnson worked as a secretary for Bernhardt Furniture Company for several years before joining the Waves in 1944. She served for the duration of World War II at Chincoteague Naval Airbase in Virginia where she met and married her first husband, Paul L. Atwood, who was the chief petty officer there.Upon retirement from the Navy in 1954, the Atwoods moved to Edisto Beach, South Carolina, where they established the Atwood Agency, a resort properties real estate company. After Mr. Atwood's death in 1973, Mrs. Johnson retired from the real estate business, spending part of the year at her home in Edisto and part of the year at her vacation home in the Florida Keys.An avid doll collector throughout her life, Mrs. Johnson amassed an extensive collection of dolls of all types and enjoyed designing and sewing clothes for them. She was also a well seasoned traveler, having explored most of the United Sates, Europe, and Mexico. Late in life she developed an enthusiasm for baseball and was especially fond of the Atlanta Braves.Mrs. Johnson moved to Lenoir permanently in 1988 when she married her childhood sweetheart, Burton L. Johnson, a retired Singer executive, now deceased. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph B. and Chris Bernard, of Morganton; nieces, Adrienne B. Marshall, of Fort Meyers; Lucette Bernard of Atlanta; and Jan Bernard of Asheville; one grand-nephew and two grand-nieces.Friends of Tina Johnson can come to her home at 316 Norwood Street, Lenoir, on Saturday, March 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to visit with her family. GEORGETOWN - Edward Carlton Henry, 75, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at his residence.Mr. Henry was born in Bastrop, La. on February 25, 1927, a son of the late Daniel Francis Henry and Johnnie Cornelius Grice Henry. He moved to Georgetown in 1937 and served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Henry retired as a maintenance foreman from International Paper Company.Mr. Henry was a member of Screven Baptist Church and served his church as a Deacon and Sunday School Director. He was an amateur ham radio operator and received a certificate for his help during Operation Desert Storm. Mr. Henry was also an avid computer enthusiast and a Mason.Surviving are his wife, Ruby Self Henry of Georgetown; two sons, Charles E. Henry of Columbia and William F. Henry of Surfside Beach; a brother, John F. Henry of North Charleston; a sister, Esther H. Standrod of Birmingham, Ala.; and a grandson, Michael E. Wayne J. "Chief" Story, 57, of Woodford, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 in Woodford. Born in Florida, he had retired at the rank of Chief in the Navy, having served in the submarine service. He was active with the Civil War Battlefield Trust and had been an EMT with the Ladysmith Vol. Rescue Squad. Survivors include his wife Mary Story; a son, James B. Story of Maputo, Mozambique; a daughter, Elaine Helmly of Moncks Corner, S.C.; a step-son, Brian Shallenberger of Beaverdam; a step-daughter, Marsha Sirks of Fredericksburg; two brothers, James Story of Pass Christian, Mississippi and Charles Story of Charleston, S.C.; two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. CONWAY - Pearlie M. Jacobs, age 86, of Magrath Ave., died Friday, March 1, 2002, at his residence following an illness.Mr. Jacobs was born in Loris, a son of the late John Clinton and Cora Faircloth Jacobs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conway and a former Deacon and member of the Annex Bible Class. Mr. Jacobs was a farmer in the Pleasant Grove Church Community and was a member, and deacon, of Pleasant Grove Church. He began selling insurance with Liberty Life Insurance Company in 1941, helped sell stock and insurance with Investment Life & Trust Company. Mr. Jacobs was owner and operator of Pearlie Jacobs Insurance Agency in Conway and sold insurance for 61 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially quail hunting. Mr. Jacobs was a member of Gunters Island Hunting Club and Campfield Hunting Club. He was also a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Masonic Loge #65 AFM, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Omar Temple of the Shrine of Charleston. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys Prince Jacobs.Surviving are, two sons, Jimmie Jacobs of Conway and his wife, Doris and Roger Jacobs of Myrtle Beach and his wife Sandra; one brother, Hayward Jacobs of Charleston; two sisters, Estaleen Prince of Loris and Olene Lepidas of Cypress, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jarrett Jacobs and his wife, Dr. Ginger Jacobs, Dawn Haithcock and her husband, Tony, all of Conway, Holly Tweedell and her husband Chris and Amber Lynn Jacobs all of Myrtle Beach; two great-grandchildren, Maggie Haithcock and Skyler Jacobs, both of Conway.Funeral services will be held, 3:30 p.m., Sunday, at the First Baptist Church of Conway, with the Rev. John was educated in the public schools of Detroit and attended the University of Michigan, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was an honor graduate of the engineering school and was awarded a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1947. His college years were interrupted by services in the US Navy Air Corps during World War II as a naval aviation cadet.After receiving his degree, John worked for Stinson Aircraft Corporation in Detroit for a short while before joining a long-standing family business, the Clippert Brick Company, located in Dearborn, Mich. He remained with the company for his entire business career; serving as President until his retirement in 1985.John married Mary Sue Nankervis, of Detroit, on September 17, 1949. They relocated to Seabrook Island, S.C. in 1986. While active in business in Michigan, John served on the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church, Dearborn, and as a Rotarian. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Dearborn Country Club. SUMMERTON - Roy T. "Tom" Hobby, Sr., 77, husband of Martha "June" Hobby, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born July 28, 1924, in Decatur, Ga., he was a son of the late Roy Deneke and Madolyn Winter Hobby. He was a retired executive with Southern Bell Telephone Company, an Episcopalian, a Rotarian, a member of the Exchange Club, an avid youth sports coach, a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a W.W.II U.S. Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife of Summerton, two sons, Roy T. Hobby, Jr., of Conway, and Raymond D. Hobby of Newberry; two daughters, Robin Mullis of Charlotte, N.C., and Rhonda D. Hobby of Summerton; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one nephew, and one niece. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Breeding.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m., Monday evening, in the chapel of STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME IN MANNING.
