Mr. Murray was born March 21, 1925 in Charleston, S.C., the son of John Murray and Rosa Murray McNeil. He was a member of St. James United Presbyterian Church. He was a retired electrician with South Carolina Electric and Gas. He served with the U.S. Army during W.W.II and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Isabelle Heyward Murray of Charleston, S.C.; 3 sons, William Murray, Bernard Murray, Roland Murray all of Charleston, S.C.; one step-son, Dion Lamont Davis and his wife Janese of Charleston, S.C.; 3 sisters, Anna Mae Sikes, Ernestine Richardson and Elizabeth Pickens, all of Charleston, S.C. He is predeceased by a brother, William Murray, Sr.

LUKENSOW, Raymond
Raymond Lukensow, 90, died on the evening of Sunday, March 3, 2002 at his home in Goose Creek. His funeral service will be 11:30 o'clock Wednesday morning in J. Mr. Lukensow was born in Russia on December 1, 1911 the son of Leon and Anna Lukensow. He was a retired die maker for Endicott Forge in Endicott, N.Y. Mr. Lukensow was a member of Northwood Assembly Church and a member of the Home Fellowship Group of the church.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lottie Russek Lukensow; his four daughters, June (Norman) Valimont of Goose Creek, Sonja Burns of Fayetteville, N.C., Faye (Saul) Wilson of Endicott, N.Y., Linda (Ron) Donlick of Mt. Pleasant; his two sons, Ray (Jane) Lukensow of North Richland Hills, Texas and Dan (Sue) Lukensow of Loveland, Colorado. Fourteen grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a brother, John Lukensow of New Jersey, also survive him.

MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. - Mr. David Vann, 82, of McClellanville, S.C., formerly of Monroe, N.C., died Monday, March 4, 2002. He was born in Union County, N.C., on October 1, 1919, son of the late John C. M. Vann and Janie Gulledge Vann. He was a graduate of the Citadel, member of the Summerall Guards, Captain of Cadet Co. M. in his senior year. He was a U.S. Air Force WWII and Korean Conflict veteran and retired from the Air Force Reserve after 40 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a retired general manager of South Carolina for the ACACIA Mutual Life Insurance Co. Mr. Jackie Lanair Evans, Jr., age 38, died in Atlanta, Ga., March 2, 2002. Mr. Evans ran a construction-renovation company with two partners in Atlanta. LANHAM, JR., Stephen
SIMI VALLEY, CALIF. - Stephen Arthur Lanham, Jr., 65, originally of Charleston, died at home of cancer, February 27, 2002. He was the son of the late Lucie Heard Lanham and Stephen Arthur Lanham, Sr. He was preceded in death by his son, John Lawrence Lanham.
He is survived by his devoted companion, Gloria Englmeier, daughters Jennifer Lanham Allen and Jane Lanham, of Simi Valley, sister Mary Ann Lanham Seckinger of Savannah, Ga., four nieces, three great nephews and two great nieces.
YOUNG, Pearl
GEORGETOWN - Pearl S. Young, 97, widow of Marshall Young, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at 2 p.m., in Maryville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Officiating will be Rev. David Coker, Rev. Marshall Young and Rev. Tommy Cox. Burial, directed by GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, will follow in Antioch Cemetery.
She was born, May 24, 1904, in Robeson County, N.C., a daughter of the late James Sampson and Edna Hammond Sampson.
Mrs. Young was a long-time resident of Georgetown and taught school for a few years in Robeson County before moving to Georgetown County. She was a member of Maryville Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She also served in various capacities in the church in earlier years. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are, one son, David C. Young and his wife, Christeen of Georgetown; three daughters, Betty Y. Carver and Joyce Y. New and her husband Larry of Titusville, Fla., and Lucille Y. Rowe and her husband David of Georgetown; two brothers, Carl Sampson of Laurel Hill, N.C., and Rev. Prather Sampson of Lumberton, N.C.; two sisters, Retha S. Locklair of Hamlet, N.C., and Addie S. Chavis of Lumberton, N.C.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, James (Buddy) Young and a granddaughter, Patsy C. Ynclan.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Rowell was born January 29, 1922, in Coosawhatchie, S.C., the son of Charles Edward Rowell and Ida Beach Rowell. He was owner and operator of Rowell's Busy Bee Super Market from 1951 until his retirement. He was a member of West Ashley Southern Methodist Church and the Mariners Lodge (Wahalla). He served with the 99th Bomb Group of the 15th Army-Air Corps during W.W.II, and was shot down over Austria, a prisoner of war in Germany and liberated by General George S. Patton in 1945. He was awarded three Air Medals and the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, David E. Rowell, James R. Rowell and Gene R. Rowell all of Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Kathy R. Lukow of Hebron, Conn.; one sister, Jerry R. Cook of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, William Rowell of Ridgeland, S.C.; eight grandchildren, David Rowell, Jr., Marty Rowell, Jason Rowell, Elizabeth Griffiths, Michael Rowell, Megan Rowell, Kate Lukow and Jennifer Lukow; three great-grandchildren, Brooke Rowell Ashley Rowell and Erica Bales.
YOUNG, James
James L. Young, 72, died Sunday at a Charleston hospital.
A memorial service is Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m., at the Circular Church in Charleston, with interment to follow at the graveyard. Family will receive friends before the service at 3 p.m. in Keller Hall at the church.
Dr. Young was born December 4, 1929, in Birmingham, Ala., to William E. and Sara E. Young.
He graduated phi beta kappa from Miami University, earned a divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, and both masters and doctorate from Western Michigan University.
Young was ordained an American Baptist minister and served churches in Seaford, N.Y., Brattleboro, Vt., Battle Creek, Mich.; and served as executive director of the Samaritan Center in East Lansing, Mich. He retired in 1995 and moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Young's mission: "to afflict the comforted and to comfort the afflicted." He believed in the relationship between faith and action and was a proponent and spokesperson for woman's rights and the war on poverty. He was active in forming a community action agency. He led a contingent from Vermont to march with Dr. King from Selma to Montgomery and marched on Washington. While minister of the First Baptist Church of Battle Creek he helped found the Samaritan Counseling Center, a non-profit faith based counseling center. He later became the founding executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center in E. Lansing, Mich.
As a young protestant clergyman his published letter in the New York Times in suport of Catholic John Kennedy's presidential candidacy incited controversy. In order to protect religious freedom he was a long proponent of the separation of church and state and was a plaintiff in a suit against the County of Charleston in a dispute pertaining to the display of the Ten Commandments in the County Chambers.
He was president of the East Cooper Democratic Party, a member of Circular Church in Charleston, had served as finance chairman there, and had organized Crop Walks. He had been involved with CROP since 1965, organizing and walking for world hunger.
His wife of 48 years, Joan Elizabeth Young, a daughter, three sons, three brothers, and seven grandchildren survive him.

Ethel H. Welburn, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, February 21, at a local hospital. Born in Manchester, England, to the late Joseph and Ethel Howarth. Mrs. Welburn was married to the late Harold Welburn. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her son, Ronald Welburn of Skillman, N.J., and a sister, Ann Miller of Scotland. A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Mt.
