THORNHILL, SR., Jake
Jake Julian Thornhill, Sr., 66, of Albany St., St. Stephen, S.C., a former market manager and meat cutter, died Monday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002, in the First Baptist Church, Bonneau. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, St. Stephen. Friends may call at the ST. STEPHEN CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. this Wednesday evening.
Mr. Thonhill was born May 7, 1935, in Olanta, S.C., a son of Lynwood Thornhill and Mattie Bingham Thornhill. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, St. Stephen, and was active at the Faith Holiness Church, Scranton. He is preceded in death by one sister, Nilla Rea Thornhill; four brothers, Julian Thornhill, Burley Thornhill, Jack Thornhill, and Marion Thornhill.
Surviving are his wife, Goldie Betz Thornhill; two daughters, Malinda T. Russell and her husband Steve of Fountain Inn and Cathy T. Robinson and her husband Jimmie of Sumter; a son, Rev. Jake J. Thornhill, Jr. and his wife Patsy of Greensboro, N.C.; two step-daughters, Donna Gaul and her husband Richard of Alliance, Ohio and Susan Fisher and her husband Terry of Alvin; a step son, Marty Smith and his wife Brenda of St. Stephen; a sister, Clarice T. Kirby of Olanta; a brother, W.D. Thornhill of Pineville; a former wife Vivian T. Kirven of Sumter, S.C.; and 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cabading was born January 17, 1930 in Bodoc Pinili Locas Norte, Philippine Islands, the son of the late Mouro Cabading and Estafania Ragasa Cabading. He was a member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church and a retired veteran serving in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Mr. Cabading is the founder and co-owner of Cabading Homes Assisted Living.
He is survived by his wife, Lolita Basuel Cabading of North Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Allan Michael Cabading of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Albert Raymond Cabading of North Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Margie Cabading Nicholaus of Houston, Tex.; two brothers, Mariano Cabading of San Diego, Calif.; Antonio Cabading of The Philippine Islands; three grandchildren, Augie Nicholaus, Artie Nicholaus and Andy Nicolaus all of Houston, Texas.

PINCKNEY, Samuel

MCCARTHY, Walter
Walter Joseph McCarthy, 73, of Summerville, husband of Anna May Strobel McCarthy died Tuesday afternoon at his residence.
A Funeral Mass will be held, Friday, March 8, 2002, at 9 o'clock, at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church, Summerville. Rite of Committal with Final Commendation will be in Plantation Memorial Gardens, Moncks Corner.
Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, this evening, and Thursday evening from 5 until 8 o'clock. A prayer service will be held on Thursday evening at 7 o'clock.
Born on April 6, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late William and Helen Sammon McCarthy. He graduated from schools in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a retired messenger for the Department of Social Services and Dept. of Lawyers of Pan Am in New York. He was a member of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church.

HARRIS, Richard
Richard Paul "Ricky" Harris, 44, died unexpectedly on the morning of Saturday, March 2, 2002. The relatives and friends of Ricky are invited to attend his celebration of life services, Wednesday evening, March 6, 2002, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL, at 7:30 o'clock. Ricky was born in Sommerville, Mass., on May 31, 1957, the son of Earl E. Harris, Jr., of Charleston and June Ann Lucia Harris of Nashua, N.H. He was an electrician for L&S Electronics, having worked there for over four years. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with friends and was an active member of ABATE. Along with many of his friends, he was very active raising money for different children's charities. A bear of a man with a long beard, always willing to lend a helping hand and giving to those in need, he acquired the nickname "Santa Clause."
In addition to his mother and father, Rick is survived by his wife, Lynn Harris, his brother, David Harris of Charleston, his sisters, Lyn Ann Harris of Nashua, N.H., and Lori Ann Harris of Charleston. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews mourn his loss. We will miss you and may God take care of you until we see you again.

BENTON, Kerensky
RUFFIN - Kerensky Levy Benton, 84, a retired mechanic, died Tuesday in a Walterboro hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church near Bells, conducted by Rev. Ed Stiltz and Rev. David Cox. Interment will be in the church Cemetery, directed by the Fred Parker Funeral Home.
Mr. Benton was born Sept. 16, 1917 in Ruffin, a son of the late Kelly Lee Benton and Gertrude Hudson Benton Goodwin. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Bethel Men's Club. He was a former employee of Breland Chevrolet, Sweat Pontiac-Buick-GMC and the city of Walterboro.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Ulmer Benton, a son and daughter-in-law, James D. "Jimmie" and Barbara Benton of Walterboro, a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Marshall Walling of Ruffin, a sister, Adrianna Goodwin of Ruffin, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

SKERRITT, JR., John
John Francis Skerritt, Jr., 72, husband of Shirley M. Skerritt, of Ladson, S.C. died March 3, 2002 at a Summerville hospital.

Mr. Skerritt was born August 3, 1929 in Albany, New York, a son of the late John Francis Skerritt, Sr. and Helen Rogers Skerritt. He was a Korean war veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired salesman for GNC. He was a member of Charleston Stamp Club.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mansheffer Skerritt, of Ladson, S.C.; five sons, Steve Skerritt and David Skerritt, both of Warsaw, Ind., Michael Skerritt, of Lilburn, Ga., John Skerritt of Summerville, S.C., and Andy Skerritt of Christiansburg, Va.; sister, Clare Breslin and a brother, George Skerritt, both of Albany, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and five daughters-in-law.

ROUSE, James
James Lester Rouse, 77, of Bonneau, a retired businessman, died Monday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Bonneau. Burial directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Rouse was born June 2, 1924 at Marlboro County, S.C., a son of Jim Rouse and Mary Butler Rouse. He was a member of the Gideons International. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and member of the First Baptist Church of Bonneau. He was the widower of Eva Quick Rouse.
Surviving are a son, Raymond H. Bowen of Bonneau; sister, Flora Bell Kirby of Mullins; grandson, L. Scott Bowen of Goose Creek; granddaughter, Cheri Ayn Whaley of Marion; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

DIXON, JR., Julian
LAKE CITY - Mr. Julian Spencer "Bubba" Dixon, Jr., 82, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, after a short illness.
Mr. Dixon was born June 14, 1919, in Lucknow, SC, and moved to Bishopville.
He was a son of the late Julian Spencer and Anna Dell Heriot Dixon, and the brother of the late Anna Dixon Covington.
He was the owner and president of J. S. Dixon Lumber Company in Lake City for 40 years. After his retirement, he worked for T. S. Ragsdale Company and formed another company in the Lake City area. He was a member of the SLMA and served as the chaplain of that organization for 38 years and received the Beale Award for most outstanding lumberman of the year. He was an Elder in the Lake City Presbyterian Church and the heart of the J. D. Whitehead Sunday School Class. Mr. Dixon was a member of the Lake City Rotary Club and was honored by that organization as the only Man of the Year and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also recognized by the City of Lake City as the Father of the Year. He was a graduate of Clemson A&M College and remained an active member of IPTAY. Mr. Dixon served in World War II as a captain with the 93rd Infantry. He was chairman of the Pee Dee United Way Campaign for many years. He organized the "Just Say No Club" in the Lake City area and was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Colonial War Lords.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Ellen Richardson Dixon of Lake City; two daughters, Mary (Dixon) and Eric Ruschky of Columbia and Jane (Dixon) and Spencer Player of Lake City; one son Dr. J. Spencer and Charlotte Dixon, III, of Orangeburg; and the joy of his life, his grandchildren: Cori (Dixon) and Chris Baker, Jane Spencer Ruschky, Julian Spencer (Spence) Dixon, IV, and Mary Ellen Richardson Player. He is also survived by his nephew, Dr. Olin C. Covington, Jr., of Mayfield, KY.
Mr. Dixon will be remembered as the man who never knew a stranger. His priorities were to his Lord, his family and to others. He will be remembered as a friend to all.
A service of praise will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Lake City Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers are: Dr. Olin C. Covington, Jr., David Huckabee, Frank Douglas, Russell Turner, Dr. James Daniels, Dr. Jim Richardson, Joe Richardson, Dr. Alva Whitehead and Wayne Rast.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the: Free Will Baptist Church in Brazil, c/o Bobby Poole, P. O. Box 5002, Antioch, TN 37011. Mr. Dixon had supported this mission church since its founding. Also, contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 2350 Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501.
Visitation will be from 7:00 -- 9:00 P.M. Wednesday night in the funeral home.

DORNETTO, Anthony
Anthony F. "Frank" Dornetto, age 56, of Flagler Beach, died February 27, 2002 at his residence. He was a native of Pittsburg, Penn. and had lived in Flagler Beach for the past 6 years. Mr. Dornetto was a veteran of the Army having served in Korea with the 101st Airborne Unit. He worked as an Ironworker and was a member of the Boilermakers International Union and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Palm Coast.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m., Friday, March 15, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Charleston, S.C. Dornetto of Carnegie, Penn.; and a sister, Mary T. Braithwaite of Cecil, Penn. He is survived by five nephews, three nieces, two great-nephews, and one great-niece.

GILLAND, JR., John
CONWAY - Dr. John D. "Dessie" Gilland, Jr., age 88, of Elm St., died Monday, March 4, 2002, at a Conway hospital.
Dr. Gilland was born January 17, 1914, in Florence, a son of the late John deSaussure Gilland, Sr., and Jane Allen Gilland. Dr. Gilland was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina. He practiced medicine at Morrisania City and Lenox Hill hospitals in New York City as well as in Charlotte, N.C., and was Chief of Surgery in Kingstree before moving to Conway in 1948, where for many years he was one of only two surgeons in Horry County. He served as Chief of Staff of Conway Hospital; thrice President of the Horry County Medical Society; first President of the South Carolina Medical Care Foundation; S.C. Medical Association President; member and delegate of the American Medical Association; and board member of the S.C. Medical Association Political Action Committee. He was a member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons; Southeastern Surgical Congress; Southern Medical Association; Tri-State Medical Society; and Vice-President of the Atlantic Coastline Railroad Surgeons and member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina.
Dr. Gilland was a member of the Kingston Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee and was named Trustee Emeritus. Dr. Gilland was active in his community in a variety of ways, Conway Community Concert organizer and first President; First Chairman of the Board for Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Council for the Arts; Conway High School Foundation Board; Conway Hospital Foundation Board; Lions Club member; Brookgreen Gardens Life Member. He was also named Honorary Alumnus of both Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. He was predeceased by a son, John D. Gilland, III, and a sister, Louise Kitchens.
Surviving are, his wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth Dove Gilland of Kingstree; two daughters, Elizabeth Dove Gilland of Conway and Jane Gilland Skinner of Georgetown and her husband Dr. Wright Skinner; one sister, Ruth Barnett of New York; four granddaughters, Ginny, Marguerita, Rachel and Caroline Skinner all of Georgetown.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at Kingston Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Steins officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, directed by GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

STEWARD, JR., Dan
WALTERBORO - Dan Steward, Jr., 58, died Friday, March 1, 2002, in a Walterboro hospital.
The funeral will be 1 p.m., on Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Buckhead United Methodist Church, Ruffin, S.C. Burial will be in Smyly Cemetery.
Mr. Steward was born in Colleton County and was the son of the late Dan Steward, Sr., and Magalene Walker Steward. He attended the public schools in Colleton County and was employed with Ackerman Landscaping Company for 12 years. He was a member of Buckhead United Methodist Church.

CLARK, Susan
Susan Valeria Clark of Charleston, S.C., entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 5, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Thursday morning, March 7, 2002, at 11 o'clock. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock.
Mrs. Clark was born in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of J. Harold Clark and Ellen Lee Clark. A graduate of St. Andrews High School, she attended Anderson and Winthrop Colleges and graduated from the first class of Roper Petit School of Radiological Technology. She was the lead CT Technologist at Roper Hospital.
Surviving are her parents of Charleston, S.C.; one son, John C. Faircloth of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Mary-Ellen Faircloth of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Terry L. Clark and Jean S. Clark, sister-in-law, of Charleston, S.C.; two nephews, Lee Clark of Charleston, S.C., and Scott Clark of Pendelton, S.C.; three grand nephews.
