SMITH, Bessie
Bessie Weatherford Smith, 82, of S. Live Oak Dr., Moncks Corner, S.C., died Sunday in a local nursing home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, March 20, 2002, in the CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER. Interment will be in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 noon until the hour of service on Wednesday.
Mrs. Smith was born July 8, 1919, in Cross, S.C., a daughter of Benjamin Steven Weatherford and Cleopatra Bilton Weatherford. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family. She is the widow of Edward L. Smith, Sr., and was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty S. Jones.
Surviving are, a daughter, Agnes S. Campbell of Moncks Corner; a son, Edward L. Smith, Jr., of Summerville; a brother, Herbert E. Weatherford of Cordesville; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pierina "Bea" Linn, 85, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at her home in Summerville. Born January 26, 1917, in New York, N.Y., she was the daughter of Michael and Adele Gigiglo (nee Sango). She was employed by Conroe School District for 10 years. She enjoyed sewing. Preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Linn, Sr., son, Henry Linn, Jr., daughter, Gladys Agins, two sisters, Emma Garcia and Dorothy Ventrillia, grandson, Charles Linn. She is survived by her daughter Cathy Harrison of New Jersey, sisters, Gloria Russo of New York, Sylvia Pandisica of New Jersey, Grace Frugielli of New York, daughter-in-law, Irene Linn of Goose Creek; two grandsons, Jeffrey Linn (Deanna) of Goose Creek and Joseph Agins of New York; four granddaughters, Patricia Golla (Patrick) of Summerville, Denise Chandler (David) of Goose Creek, Darlene Harrison, and Sue Ellen Harrison, both of New Jersey; nine great-grandchildren, Timothy Hebert, Henry Linn, Jeremy Hebert, Stephen Linn, Christopher Linn, Kristina Linn, Michael Linn, Meghan Chandler, and MaKayla Chandler; great-great-grandchild, Adin Linn; granddaughter-in-law, Regina Linn, Tomball, Texas. WHITMIRE, Annie
GREAT FALLS, S.C. - Mrs. Annie Campbell Slayton Whitmire, 92, of Great Falls, S.C., died Sunday, March 17, at a Lancaster, S.C., hospital. She was twice married, to the late Mr. Marion Slayton who died in 1955 and later to Mr. J.J. Whitmire who died in 1992.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Trinity Baptist Church, Great Falls, S.C. Interment, 4 p.m., at Carolina Memorial Gardens, North Charleston, S.C. Rev. Darrell Twitty, Rev. Mendal Baker and Rev. David Veronne will officiate.
Mrs. Whitmire was born December 3, 1909, in Newberry, S.C., the daughter of the late Eddie F. Campbell and the late Sallie Baker Campbell. She retired from Newberry Mills in Newberry, S.C. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and attended Newberry County Schools.
Survivors include, four daughters, Rochelle S. Burbage of Summerville, S.C., Marcelle S. Driggers of Summerville, S.C., Glorious S. Sweatt of Rock Hill, S.C., Ann S. Taylor of Great Falls, S.C.; two sisters, Louise C. Horton of Laurens, S.C., Agnes C. Bailey of Whitmire, SC.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Sweatt, and a great-grandson, Jamie Sweatt.

CANTON, GA. - Mrs. Girdie Pritcher Miller, 92, of Canton, Ga. formerly of Charleston, SC died Sunday in nursing home in Canton, Ga.

Mrs. Miller was born in Orangeburg County a daughter of the late Owen W. Pritcher and Stella Ott Pritcher. She was valedictorian of her class at Providence High School. She was a retired supply clerk at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. She was a former member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda P. Faber of Canton, GA; grandsons, Mark Faber of Largo, FL, Scott Faber of San Francisco, and David Faber of Hilton Head, SC; brothers, Ralph Pritcher of Monroe, LA, P. Billie S. Roberts, 78, of Mocks Corner, S.C., co-owner of Friar Tucks, died Monday at a North Charleston hospital.

Mr. Roberts was born November 15, 1923 in Green County, Mississippi, a son of William W. Roberts and Josephine Rigney Roberts. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a retired R.O.T.C. instructor with Berkeley High School. He was a member, deacon, elder and treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Margie White Roberts of Moncks Corner; son, Michael E. Roberts and his wife, Rose, of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter, Carol Kennemur of Moncks Corner; brother, James W. Roberts of Sand Hill, Mississippi; sister, Helen Polen of Laurel, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Robert H. Kennemur and his wife, Shannon of Sullivan's Island, S.C.; Jessica Roberts and Michael E. Dale Richard Wasson, age 73, of Charleston, died Monday, March 18, 2002 at a local hospital.
Born in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary Jackson Wasson. Mr. Wasson was a graduate of the Citadel and was a retired Civil Service employee, and a member of Advent Lutheran Church. Mr. Wasson was a Mason, past master of the Dorchester Lodge, a member of the Elks Club and a member of the VFW.

Loree Bullock Sweet, 103, of Moncks Corner, a retired restaurant owner, died Tuesday at a Summerville hospital.

FLORENCE - Ferebe Spears Cone, age 93, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. She was the daughter of Meade Poyas Hawley Spears and George Duffie Spears. Mrs. Cone was predeceased by her husband, Hampton Ellison Cone.
Mrs. Cone is a graduate of Coker College and of graduate studies at New York School of Social Work. She was the first state supervisor of staff development and training in social services for the state of South Carolina, retiring in 1976, at which time she was honored as Outstanding State Employee. In 1986 she received the Alumni Achievement Award at Coker College. She has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators since 1970.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Florence, and of Cottageville Baptist Church where she and Ellison served devotedly in every phase of church life.
She is survived by three sisters, Meade S. Gasque and Elizabeth Spears, both of Florence, and Sarah S. Estes of Camden, S.C.; and a brother, Henry A. "Hart" Spears of Florence.
A memorial service will be held at the Carolina Retirement Home in Florence at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 21, directed by WATERS-POWELL FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 22, in Cottageville Baptist Church and interment will follow at Fox Cemetery in Cottageville, S.C.

Leno Taylor McNeill Loy, 86, of North Charleston, widow of Mervin Loy, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, while residing at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Loy was born March 21, 1915, in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late John Wes Taylor and Annie Murray Taylor. She was a retired nurse and a member of Portside Baptist Church.

BLACK, Jr., Samuel
SPARTANBURG - Samuel Orr Black, Jr., age 81, died Monday, March 18, 2002. He was the grandson of Dr. Hugh Ratchford and Mary Snoddy Black, the son of Dr. Samuel Orr and Sallie Marvil Black, and the nephew of Dr. Hugh Snoddy Black who founded the Mary Black Memorial Hospital in 1925 as the first private, not-for-profit hospital in South Carolina. Dr. Black attended the Citadel, was graduated from Wofford College, and The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
He is survived by Jane Sexton Long of the home; four children, The Reverend Ann Black Davis of Sarasota, Florida; Barry Leigh Black and his wife Jane Brown Black of Spartanburg; Dr. Mary Joan Black and her husband Robert John Ryan of Spartanburg; and Dr. Hugh Ratchford Black II and his wife Mary Katherine Hamner Black of Charlotte; ten grandchildren, Christopher Ian Davis of Atlanta, Bryan Thomas Davis of Los Angeles, Catheryn Ann Davis of Greenville, Jeffrey Michael Brown and Julianne Brown of Spartanburg, Sarah Katherine Black and Samuel Orr Black IV of Charlotte, Kelly Marie Ryan, Mary Brennan Ryan and Patricia Joan Ryan of Spartanburg; a niece, Sallie Barre James and her husband Dr. William A. She worked in New York for more than 50 years as a nurse prior to her retirement. She was a member of the YWCA.
Surviving are one brother, K.J. DeLee of St. George, S.C., one sister, Ms. Lillie Mae DeLee of North Charleston, S.C. She is also survived by numerous nieces, grandnieces, nephews, grandnephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

EDISTO ISLAND - Mrs. Nina Smoak Kinard, 69, of 487 Highway 174, also of Jonas Road, Islandton, died Monday. Mrs. Kinard was born in Colleton County, a daughter of the late William Harvey Smoak, Sr., and Pearl Bunton Smoak. She was a service representative for Southern Bell for 30 years. She was the former owner of Edisto Garden Center and Palmetto Storage, and was currently owner and operator of Edisto Supermarket. She was a member of Adnah United Methodist Church, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a member of the Communication Workers of America, and a member of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are her husband, Willis L. Kinard, a son, Dean Kinard and his wife Judy of Charleston, a daughter, Beth Kinard of Edisto Island, and three grandchildren, Sarah, Abby, and Nathan Kinard.
