MILLEN, GA. - Mrs. Beatrice Landing Chears, 86, formerly of Charleston Heights, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002.
She was born in Screven County, a retired instructor for the South Carolina Department of Vocational & Rehabilitation and a member of the Millen Church of God.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a. m. Friday, March 22, at the Millen Church of God with Rev. Wilma Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in the Elam Cemetery.
Survivors include her two sons, John T. Chears of St. James, MO and Charles T. Chears of Charleston, SC and a brother, Debenuion Landing of Columbia, SC., seven grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas George King, 63, of Woodstock, Ga., formerly of North Charleston, S.C., a former employee of Shell Agricultural Chemical Co., died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m., Friday, March 22, 2002, in St. John's Baptist Church Cemetery, Moncks Corner. Burial, directed by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER, will follow.
Mr. King was born August 13, 1938, in Florence County, S.C., a son of George King and Carolyn Eaddy King. Mr. King was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a graduate of Clemson University and received his masters degree from Florida State University.
Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Metts King; two daughters, Ruth K. Donahoo of Dunwoody, Ga., and MaryClaire King of Paris, France; his mother of Pine Log; a sister, Gail Simmons of Pine Log; mother-in-law, Orby M. Metts of Moncks Corner; sister-in-law, Mildred M. Mills of Macedonia; brother-in-law, William M. Metts of Moncks Corner; and three grandsons; Eliot, Keegan, and Jonah.

Gloria Cuzzell Scarborough, 72, of Charleston, died Monday, March 18, at her residence. Born in Charleston to the late Anthony Aloysius and Gertrude Davis Cuzzell. Mrs. Scarborough was married to the late Harry Lawrence Scarborough, Jr. She was a 1946 graduate of Bishop England High School, a member of the Shepherd Center of Charleston, Notre Dame Club of Charleston, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of 50 years, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Nativity Leisure Club, Charter Member of the Perpetual Adoration Society, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. After many years of service, Mrs. Scarborough is survived by her son, Harry L. Scarborough, III, of Charleston, four daughters, Ann S. Robertson of Charleston, Trudy S. Coffey of Charleston, Ruth S. Baker and husband Rodney of Charleston, and Bobbi Scarborough Harrell and husband Larry of Rome, Italy. Also survived by four grandchildren, Michael E. Coffey, Jennifer M. Baker, Jonathon T. Ray L. Day, 76, of McComb, Miss., and formerly of Mansfield, La., passed away March 19, 2002, at Southwest MS Regional Medical Center. Mr. Day was a retired Major in the United States Army - Air Force Reserves. Mr. Day was a graduate of Louisiana Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering and Louisiana State University with a degree in engineering. He was also a retired plant manager for International Paper Co. in Mansfield, La., after 26 years of employment.
Mr. Day was preceded in death by his parents; Ora Coe Day, Sr., and Blanche Adams Day, two brothers, Ralph Day and Ora Coe Day, Jr.

EDISTO ISLAND - Mrs. Nina Smoak Kinard, 69, of 487 Highway 174, also of Jonas Road, Islandton, died Monday. Mrs. Kinard was born in Colleton County, a daughter of the late William Harvey Smoak, Sr., and Pearl Bunton Smoak. She was a service representative for Southern Bell for 30 years. She was the former owner of Edisto Garden Center and Palmetto Storage, and was currently owner and operator of Edisto Supermarket. She was a member of Adnah United Methodist Church, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a member of the Communication Workers of America, and a member of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are her husband, Willis L. Kinard, a son, Dean Kinard and his wife Judy of Charleston, a daughter, Beth Kinard of Edisto Island, and three grandchildren, Sarah, Abby, and Nathan Kinard.

Lucille Foster Porter, 87, widow of John Daniel Porter died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Charleston, S.C. Mrs. Porter was born Saturday, November 7, 1914, in Beckley, W.Va., the daughter of James Garfield and Dora Taylor Foster. She was a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va., and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. Mrs. Porter was a retired Registered Nurse, a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland, Ky., also a member of Chapter BQ, P.E.O. Sisterhood and Coterie of Winter Park, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, John Daniel Porter. Surviving is a daughter, Pamela Anne Porter of Charleston, S.C., a son, Michael Porter of Louisville, Ky., a sister, Mary Virginia Lawrence of Winter Park, Fla., a brother, Eugene Foster of Beckley, W.Va., and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2002, at the graveside, Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Fla. She was born Oct. 15, 1899 in Little Mountain the oldest child of Clifton Daniel "Kip" and Daisy Magdeline Epting Shealy. She moved to Leesville when she was a teenager and worked in Cooner's Department Store, married Thomas Bates Watson in 1919 at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church of Batesburg and lived on Hibernia Farm in Monetta. She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Batesburg where she was a former SS Teacher and Circle member. Mrs. Watson was an advocate for preserving history in Lexington, Saluda and Edgefield counties and was especially interested in old family cemeteries and historical landmarks. She was an expert at chair caning, quilting, rug making and looming. In the late 60s, she was written up in The State newspaper as she was preserving the age-old art of chair caning. She was an avid baseball fan and followed teams and scores by radio and television.Surviving are a son, Louis Watson of Monetta; daughters, Carolina Paulling of Batesburg-Leesville, Luanne Edwards of Leesville, Martha Hall of Blythewood, Sarah Watson of Lexington; a sister, Jesse Shealy of Lake Murray; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Bates Watson, Sr., sons, Thomas Bates Watson, Jr. and Robert Watson.

Edna Boehm Ott, 82, of Charleston, 61 year wife of William "Bill" Ott, Jr., died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at her residence. Born in Baltimore, Md. to Antone and Mary Miller Boehm. She was a graduate of Patterson High School, a member of Church of the Nativity and a member of Exxon Annuitant Club. KINGSTREE - John Melvin Brown, 76, died Wednesday in a Kingstree hospital after a long illness.Mr. Brown was born June 3, 1925 in the Cedar Swamp community, a son of the late Dexter A. and Omie Burrows Brown. He served fifty years as weather observer for the National Weather Service and retired as Williamsburg County Auditor. Mr. Brown was a past president of the Palmetto Coon Hunters Association and a member of Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine B. Lockhart.Surviving are his wife, Margaret Cade Brown of Kingstree, a daughter, Johnette B. Mrs. Halfacre was born on December 22, 1912 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Ambrose Powell and Lela Sease Ruff. She was a graduate of Newberry College class of 1933. She was a retired school teacher and lunch program coordinator at Irmo High School. She was a member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church, a member of the B Sunday School Class. She and her husband were very active with volunteer work in the community and her late husband was retired superintendent of Irmo Public Schools.Mrs. Halfacre is survived by a son, R. Gordon Halfacre of Clemson, two grandchildren and a spouse, Angela C. Halfacre of Charleston and G. Robert and Lara Halfacre of Clemson.
