ARDEN, N.C. - Robert Nelson, 40 of 3669 Sweeten Creek Rd. died Tuesday, March 19 at his residence. Graveside Funeral Services will be held 2 p. m. Sunday at the Bowman Memorial Cemetery officiating by Rev. Gary Briden. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Bryant Funeral Home. Mr. Nelson was born Feb. 27, 1962 in Memphis, TN a son of the late Robert M. Nelson and Martha B. Nelson Dressel. Mr. Nelson was a former pastor of Goodlettsville Southern Methodist Church in Goodlettsville, TN, graduated from Southern Methodist College in Orangeburg, S.C. and he was a member of the Christ Community Baptist Church in Arden, N.C.. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Abby Nelson and by a brother Frank Nelson. Surviving are: wife Julie Way Nelson, 2 daughters, Christy Nelson of Nashville TN and Emily Nelson of Fletcher, NC, Mother Martha B. Nelson Dressel, 3 Sisters, Ginna Tillman, Beth Schuster and Cathy Hendry all of Memphis, TN.

FORE, Minnie
FLORENCE, S.C. - Minnie Geneva Price Fore, 84, of 328 Ervin St., died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at a Moncks Corner hospital after an illness.Mrs. Fore was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late James Franklin and Minnie Geneva Barfield Price. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, a homemaker and worked as a nurse's aid in the McLeod Infirmary. She was a lifelong resident of Florence and the Mars Bluff community with the exception of living in Columbia from 1949-1951. Mrs. Fore was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Fore, Sr., who died in 1977, a son, James S. Fore, Jr., who died in 1968, a brother, Charlie H. Price and a sister, Elizabeth Price Rogers.Surviving are two daughters, Janette Lee Fore Morris of Florence, and Frieda Fore Herndon of Moncks Corner, S.C.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Friendship United Methodist Church. HARDEE, Julian
MANNING - Julian "Mitch" Hardee, 76, widower of Imogene Stuckey Hardee, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Life Care Center of Columbia.Born June 27, 1925, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late John Otto Hardee and the late Bessie Player Hardee. He was a retired certified life insurance underwriter, attended the University of South Carolina, was a WWII Army veteran, and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Greeleyville.Surviving are a son, Mark Hardee of Columbia; a daughter, Genie Hardee of Asheville, N.C.; three sisters, Donna Pratt of Florence, Mary Moreland of Aiken and Reah Carmichael of Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, John Hardee of Hollywood, S.C., and Fred Hardee of Asheville, N.C.; four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Julie Hardee and Becky Hardee.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church near Greeleyville. Rev. SOUTTER, Peter
Peter Munro Soutter died Friday, March 22, at his residence in Hilton Head Island, S.C., after a long illness.He was born September 22, 1915, at Greenwich, Conn., the son of James Taylor and Helen Batelle Soutter. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., and attended Harvard University. During World War II, he served for five years including the Fifth Armored Division in the European Theater. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and was honorably discharged as a Captain, Armor.Mr. Soutter spent most of his business career in advertising and marketing, with such firms as J. Walter Thompson, General Foods and Lever Brothers in New York. He came to South Carolina in 1958, with Henderson Advertising of Greenville. Later, he was associated with Advertising, Inc., also of Greenville.Mr. Soutter married Charlotte Twachtman in December, 1941; she died in September, 1980. He came to Hilton Head in early 1981 and in November of that year, married Mrs. Helen M. Ettenger.Following retirement, Mr. Soutter volunteered for seven years at the Hilton Head Hospital. He also did voluntary work for Providence Presbyterian Church of which he was a founding member.Survivors include, his wife; three sons, Peter M. Soutter, Jr., of Raleigh, N.C., David Q. Soutter of Charleston, S.C., and Michael B. Soutter of West Palm Beach, Fla. Also surviving are five step-children, Lee Ettinger of Torrance, Calif., Allen Ettinger of Huntingdon, Pa., Richard Ettenger of Alpharetta, Ga., Nancy Moseley of Roebuck, S.C., and Susan McGaha of Douglasville, Ga., as well as 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, at Providence Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head Island, S.C.Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, or Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29928.The ISLAND HOME AND CREMATORY is in charge of arrangements.

MARTIN, James
Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of March 21, 2002, James Blair Martin, M.D., husband of Jane Pierson Martin. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. James Blair Martin are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Monday, March 25, 2002, at 2 o'clock at the graveside in Old St. Andrews Parish Episcopal Churchyard.Dr. James Blair Martin was born in Newberry, S.C., on February 22, 1916, and the son of Foster Newton Martin and Mary Helen Mower Martin. He was a 1937 graduate of Newberry College and graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1941. He served an internship at Roper Hospital from 1941-1942 and entered the United States Army Medical Corps in Collecting Company of the 61st Medical Battalion which participated in the first wave in the invasion on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. From this action, he received the Bronze Star.Upon returning to this country in 1946, Dr. Martin returned to his medical training, serving a surgical residency at Roper Hospital from 1946 to 1949 where he was Chief Resident and teaching fellow at the Medical College of South Carolina.From 1950-1953, Dr. Martin was engaged in the private practice of general surgery in Burlington, N.C. Dr. Martin was in private surgical practice in Charleston, S.C., from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. He served on the staffs of St. Francis, Baker and Roper Hospitals where he was chief of surgery for several years. Dr. Martin was Associate Professor of Surgery at MUSC and was a fellow of the American College of Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He was a member of the Southern Medical Association and the South Carolina Surgical Society. Dr. Martin was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, the Southern Medical Association and the South Carolina Surgical Society. He was an avid sportsman and was a Life Member of the South Carolina Waterfowl Association.He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Pierson Martin, two daughters, Blair M. Johnson and Helen M. GIBSON, Charles
Charles B. Gibson, 68, retired Berkeley County School Superintendent, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at a local hospital. Born December 18, 1933 in Troy, S.C. he was the son of Cornwell and Sarah Lee Gibson (nee Burnside). His career as an educator began in Anderson County. In 1959 he moved to Dorchester County and became a school principal. An integral part of Berkeley County since 1962, Mr. Gibson became Assistant Superintendent of the Moncks Corner District, then Assistant Superintendent for General Administration and Fiscal Affairs. During his tenure as Superintendent for Schools he was responsible for many changes including raising teacher's salaries, lowering teacher-student ratios, and developing programs for remedial education, gifted programs and programs for the handicapped. Mr. Gibson retired in 1990. An active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, he also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program. Mr. Gibson was active in community affairs as well and served as chairman of Berkeley Electric Trust Operation Round Up program. His hobbies included woodworking and fishing. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife of 45 years Betty Gibson (nee Pruitt); son Charles Pruitt Gibson (Kelly), Mt. Pleasant; daughter Kimberly Hogge (Randy), Mt. Pleasant; brother John Gibson (Grace), Charlotte, NC; sister Sarah Brown (Ashleigh) Ballentine, S.C.; and grandson Chase Pruitt Gibson, Mt. Pleasant. OWEN, Ernest
Ernest Jones Owen, 69, husband of Raquel Pinel Owen of Annandale, Va. died Sunday, March 17, 2002 in an auto accident in Ravenel, S.C. Mr. Owen was born Friday, December 23, 1932 in Ft. Bragg, N.C. the son of Ernest Tuttle and Elizabeth Jones Owen. He was graduated from Fishburn Military School in Waynesboro, Va. in 1950 and The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. in 1954. Mr. Owen was a retired claims adjuster with Aetna Life and Casualty, John Manville Trust. Mr. Owen was a founding member of the National Capital Military Collectors, an active member of the St. David's Society and The Citadel Alumni Association. He was the one responsible for the founding in 2000 of The Citadel Band Scholarship Fund and was here in Charleston attending the Band Reunion for the classes of 1950 through 1957 during the Corps Day weekend at The Citadel. Surviving is his wife of Annandale, Va., three sons, Evan W. Owen of Arlington, Va., Conan D. Owen of Washington, D.C. and Dylan G. Owen of Alexandria, Va., one brother, David E. Owen of Louisville, Ky. His sons will be receiving visitors on Thursday, March 28, 2002 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 2955 Tilden St., N.W., Washington, D.C. MARION, VA. - Deborah Sue Wymer Morrison, age 47, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 in the home of her parents in Marion, Virginia. She was a long time member of Middle Fork Baptist Church. Deborah graduated from Marion Senior High School and Charleston Southern University. She was employed by the Department of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Charleston, S.C. Deborah is survived by her husband, Dennis Morrison of Summerville, S.C. Two sons, Joshua Morrison and Geoffrey Morrison both of Summerville, S.C. Her parents, Charles and Edith Wymer of Marion, Va. Two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rebecca and Clay Ewald and Christy and Steve Hutton all of Marion, Va. Three brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Carol Wymer of Richlands, Va.; Mike and Linda Wymer and Steve and Beverly Wymer all of Marion, Va. Ten nieces and nephews. One great-nephew. FIGG, Jr., Eugene
Professionally known as the father of the concrete segmental bridge in America, Gene Figg passed away on March 20, 2002. He was President and Director of Bridge Art at Figg Engineering Group. Personally, he was deeply loved by his wife, Ann Ruth Figg and four daughters, Linda Figg and Nancy Duessel of Tallahassee, Karen Cox of New York City and Donna Lacey of Destin, Florida.Born in Charleston, South Carolina on August 4, 1936 and a 1958 graduate of The Citadel with a degree in Civil Engineering, Figg joined the Florida State Road Department in Tallahassee, Florida in 1958. In 1964 he joined the firm of Barrett, Daffin & Figg. In 1978, he established F&M Engineers, a forerunner of the current Figg Engineering Group. For more than 42 years, Gene practiced as an engineer in the field of bridges and large structures. His firm's specialty is signature and pre-stressed concrete segmental bridges.Under the leadership of Gene Figg, Figg Engineering Group has achieved an international reputation for designing award winning bridges that are cost-efficient. The firm has bridges in design, under construction or completed in 33 states and four foreign countries with total construction costs exceeding $6 billion.Figg dedicated his life to the design of bridges that make a statement and leave a lasting impression. His firm is responsible for the design of numerous landmark bridges in the United States, including three Presidential Medal design winners - the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, Fla.; the Linn Cove Viaduct on Grandfather Mountain, N.C.; and the Natchez Trace Parkway Arches near Nashville, Tenn. Under his direction, bridges designed by the firm have earned over 150 design awards and set numerous engineering records for a wide variety of design and construction innovations. Early in his career he recognized the value and potential of concrete segmental bridge design and pioneered use of this bridge type in the United States, beginning with the Seven Mile and Long Key Bridges in the Florida Keys. Throughout his career, Figg was instrumental in helping bridges become realities for many communities. Figg led the bridge design industry by involving community representatives in decisions about the design of their bridges-referred to as "design charettes". These public meetings resulted in communities embracing bridge designs that were truly reflective of each community's vision. His aesthetic approach has led to signature bridges throughout American that have been on the covers of 85 magazines, including 11 Engineering News Records, featured in a special bridge story in USAToday and presented on television specials by the History Channel and NOVA.

DARLINGTON - Dr. Paul Thomas Davis, 62, died Thursday evening in a Florence hospital after an illness. Graveside funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday in Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by BELK FUNERAL HOME.Dr. Davis was born in Darlington County the son of the late Otto and Pauline Anderson Davis. He was a graduate of St. John's High School in Darlington in 1958 where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. He then attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship and later transferred to Wofford College where he continued his football career and graduated in 1963. Dr. Davis went on to graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1967. He completed a Ear, Nose, and Throat residency in Charleston and a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery in Sacramento, California. Dr. Davis was also a Captain in the U.S. Air Force where he served as a Flight Surgeon. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery where he also served as a fellowship director and was a member of its Founder's Club. Dr. Davis also served as President of the South Carolina Golf Association and has been a Board Member for several years. He also served as President of Florence Country Club for seven years. GIBSON, Charles
Charles B. Gibson, 68, retired Berkeley County School Superintendent, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at a local hospital. Born December 18, 1933 in Troy, S.C. he was the son of Cornwell and Sarah Lee Gibson (nee Burnside). His career as an educator began in Anderson County. In 1959 he moved to Dorchester County and became a school principal. An integral part of Berkeley County since 1962, Mr. Gibson became Assistant Superintendent of the Moncks Corner District, then Assistant Superintendent for General Administration and Fiscal Affairs. During his tenure as Superintendent for Schools he was responsible for many changes including raising teacher's salaries, lowering teacher-student ratios, and developing programs for remedial education, gifted programs and programs for the handicapped. Mr. Gibson retired in 1990. An active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, he also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program. Mr. Gibson was active in community affairs as well and served as chairman of Berkeley Electric Trust Operation Round Up program. His hobbies included woodworking and fishing. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife of 45 years Betty Gibson (nee Pruitt); son, Charles Pruitt Gibson (Kelly), Mt. RENTZ, Sr., Richard
Richard Howard Rentz, Sr., husband of Mary Key Rentz, of Branchville, S.C., died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at his residence.Mr. Rentz was born July 31, 1920, in Bamberg County, the son of the late Ralph Rentz and the late Reba Rhoad Rentz. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Farrells Road, Branchville, S.C. He was a retired farmer. He enjoyed gardening and wood working.Funeral services will be Monday, March 25, 2002, at 11 a.m., at Zion United Methodist Church, Branchville. Burial to follow in Church Cemetery. Officiated by Rev. Kathy Griffin, assisted by Elder Robert Dobson.Survivors include his wife of the home, one son, Richard Howard Rentz, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Lil Rentz of Branchville, S.C.; one daughter, Mary Key Rosier of Branchville, S.C.; two grandsons, Ralph Wallace Rentz, Lyle Paul Rentz of Branchville.Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2002, at COONER FUNERAL HOME, in Bamberg, S.C. CHRISTOPHER, Thomas
Thomas Weldon Christopher, husband of Goldie Wood Christopher, died Friday March 22, 2002, in Greenville, S.C. Thomas Christopher, the son of Rev. Wm. Arthur (Thomas) and Ruby Christopher, was born in Duncan, S.C., in 1917. At age 17, he moved from Duncan to live in the Rio Grande Valley near La Feria, Texas until the age of 11. He then moved to a cotton farm community in Union County, S.C., where he lived until entering college. Educated at Washington & Lee University (class of 1939), he spent a stretch as a teacher in public schools, including some months in Lorton, Virginia and later as a science instructor in Parker High School in Greenville, S.C. A part of World War II found him in Sweetwater and Abilene, Texas, as a ground instructor in the WASP program. After the War, he studied law. He received an LL.B. from the University of Alabama in 1948; an LL.M. from New York University in 1950, followed by a Doctorate in Jurisprudence (JSD) in 1957. Christopher lived for a total of two years in New York City, spending the first year in Greenwich Village. He was admitted as a member of the BAR in Alabama (1948), Georgia (1955), New York (1961), North Carolina (1963), New Mexico (1968), the fifth and eleventh Federal circuits, and the Supreme Court of the United States.Christopher had an active and distinguished career in law practice and in legal education that spanned more than forty years. This experience included serving as Professor of Law, Emory University Law School (1950-1961) and as Associate Dean of that same school from 1954 to 1960. He served as Attorney for Corn Products Co. in New York from 1959 to 1960. Later, he served as Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina (1961-1965). From North Carolina, he moved to the University of New Mexico School of Law, serving as Dean and Professor of Law (1965-1971). Christopher next served as Professor of Law at the University of Alabama Law School (1971-1988), including ten years as Dean of that school (1971-1981). In 1981, he became the Director of the University of Alabama Center for Public Law and Service, serving in that position through 1985. Mr. Christopher also served as a Member of the National Advisory Food and Drug Council, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, from 1968 through 1970. He also served as Vice-President of the Food and Drug Law Foundation from 1974 through 1978.Thomas Christopher also published Poems from a Carolina Farm, a limited collection of poems in (1948) which included an introduction by Archibald Rutledge. He later published Santuc (1983). He is also the author of several books on food and drug law, including Cases and Materials on Food and Drug Law (CCH, 1966, 1973). He also contributed several articles and book reviews in scholarly journals, and chapters in several books, including the chapter entitled "The Role of Leadership" in the book The Rising South (Robert McKenzie, editor, 1976).
During his career, Mr. Christopher received many honors. Those have included: ODK, Order of the Coif; the Daniel Meador Outstanding Alumnus Award (University of Alabama School of Law, 1988); Colonel, Aide-de-Camp, Governor's staff, New Mexico; Member, Executive Committee, Association of American Law Schools (1959); the Raymond F. McLain Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership (Alabama, 1980); Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity for Outstanding Service (1980); Sam W. Pipes Distinguished Alumnus Award (The University of Alabama, 1983). Mr. Christopher is also listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN LAW, DIRECTORY OF AMERICAN SCHOLARS, AND WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN EDUCATION.Mr. Christopher's hobbies included working with the American Indian, trout fishing, and family history.Thomas Christopher is survived by his wife, Goldie Christopher; two brothers, Colonel Alfred Christopher (Goose Creek) and A.J. Christopher (Cross Keys); his son, Thomas H. Christopher of Atlanta; four step-children, John Gambrell (Aiken, S.C.) Grace Young (St. Augustine, Fla.), William Gambrell (Great Falls, S.C.), and George Gambrell (Etobicoke, Canada); grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Christopher has two deceased brothers and two deceased sisters (Brian Christopher, William Christopher, Virginia Ribble, and Betty Stewart).The family requests that memorials be sent to Augusta Heights Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C., and the University of Alabama School of Law, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 25, 2002, at 3 p.m., at Augusta Heights Baptist Church in Greenville. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
