BYRD, Mary
Mary Elizabeth Morley Byrd, 62, of Charleston, S.C., formerly of Ashville, N.C., died March 8, 2002 in Charleston. She was born in Ashville, N.C., a daughter of the late William Earl Morley and Mabel Florence Dockery. Mary was the mother of Chuck Byrd, and dear sister of the late Julia Gilley (Morley) of Michigan. She is survived by five nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Riverbend Baptist Church, 7035 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, S.C. CANNADY, Jack
Entered into eternal rest Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Cannady are invited to attend his funeral services, Tuesday morning, March 26, 2002, in Charleston Baptist Church at 11 o'clock. Mr. Cannady was born in Macon, Ga., the son of Clarence Megee Cannady and Myrtle Coleman Cannady Freeman. Mr. Cannady was retired as an electrical engineer at the Utilities Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He was a 1960 graduate of the Citadel. He was a member of the Association of Citadel Men and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He was a member of Charleston Baptist Church. Mr. Cannady also served in the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Shelvy Cameron Cannady, two sons, Jack Ralph Cannady, Jr., and wife Kelly of Andrews, N.C., William Rhett Cannady and wife Susan of Charleston, S.C., two grandchildren, Hunter and Kaley Cannady.

Middleton, five daughters, Mrs. Olivia Wright (Elroyd), Mrs. Beatrice Washington (Anthony), Mrs. Melvina Middleton, Mrs. Barbara Elbert (John) and Mrs. Bonnie King (Douglas), one step-son, Mr. Ray Smalls (Karen), one step-daughter, Ms. Frenchie Simmons, four sisters, Mrs. Suzanne Grant, Mrs. Mary Grant (Eugene), Mrs. Eveline Bellinger, and Ms. Eva Middleton, one brother, Mr. Eddie Middleton (Wilhelmina), three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Helen Smalls, Mrs. Veronica Middleton and Ms. Lorraine Gethers, two brothers-in-law, Mr. Lee Smalls and Mr. James Smalls, 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

BENSCH, Martha
Martha Elvia Estrada Delgado Bensch died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Swartz Creek. Fr. Amos Wischmeyer celebrant. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5-9 p.m. Monday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed 6:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a parish scripture service. Those desiring may make contributions to the College of Charleston Music Scholarship Fund or the charity of one's choice. Martha was born March 13, 1957 in Mexicali, Mexico. She graduated from The College of Charleston and taught school in Charleston. She married Michael R. Bensch on July 27, 1998 in Charleston, SC. Mrs. Bensch was currently working as a social worker at The Women's Shelter at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. Surviving are: husband, Lt. Michael R. Bensch; three sons, Bernard and William Krafsig, both of Charleston, SC, Jonathan Krafsig of Okinawa, Japan; mother, Maria Delgado of California; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Rita Bensch of Swartz Creek. HARE, James
Capt. James O. Hare, 68, of Palatka, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at his residence following an extended illness. He was a native of Charleston, South Carolina and had been living here for the past 14 years coming from Charleston, South Carolina. As a Civil Service servant he worked as a Coast Guard documentation officer for the 7th Coast Guard District in Key West and retired in 1974. He had also worked as a tug boat captain and a marine surveyor. He had attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed sailing, traveling, motorcycling and woodworking. He had also built two boats.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Molly" and Myrtle Hare.
He is survived by a son, Patrick Michael Hare of Havelock, North Carolina and four grandchildren, Joseph Andrew Hare of Silver Springs, Maryland, Savannah Marie Hare, Caleb Michael Hare and Ashley Victoria Hare all of Havelock, North Carolina.
A Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Rev. Cannon Robert Marsh officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening at Masters Funeral Home, Palatka, from 6 until 8 PM.

O'ROURKE, Pauline
Pauline I. O'Rourke, 68, of #5 Warren Street, Charleston, S.C. died Monday, March 25, 2002 at her residence. Miss O'Rourke was the daughter of the late John Farrell and Myrtle Hook O'Rourke. A native of Charleston, she was a retired procurement agent with Charleston County Government (43 yrs.). As a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy-Charleston Chapter #4, she was the recipient of the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal, which is the organization's highest award. She was also awarded the Winnie Davis Medal and the Merit Award for her recent work with the Confederate Museum where she served on the Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Rebecca Mott Chapter, Colonial Dames-17th Century Charles Towne Chapter, First Families of South Carolina, South Carolina Historical Society, the 1st Vice-president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Charleston Library Society, and the Charleston Chapter of the S.C. Genealogical Society.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Susan Banks of Charleston, two nephews, Dr. John Maskell and Dr. Thomas Maskell, three nieces, Susan Banks Collins, Haig Maskell Powers, and Paula Banks Andrews, great-nieces and nephews, Nicholas Maskell, Vaughn W. Collins, II, Elizabeth H. Collins, Christopher S. Andrews, Alexis P. Andrews, and Katrina R. Powers. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 27th, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Ralph Francis Garcia, 74, of Goose Creek, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at a local hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002 in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens. He was the son of the late Manuel Garcia and Carmen Trabal Garcia. He was a retired trackman with Transit Authority of New York City. He was a Navy veteran. He was a member of the World Wide Church of God, United Missionary Congregation of Summerville, where he served as an usher.
He is survived by three daughters, Roberta Raio of Wappingers Falls, New York, Theresa Garcia Egan of Carmel, New York, Suzanne Cohen of Goose Creek, S.C.; one son, Anthony Garcia of Goose Creek; three sisters, Isabel Malara of Queens, New York, Stella Doria of Mamaroneck, New York and Marjorie Iannerelli of Deer Park, New York; three grandchildren, Michele Williams of Wappingers Falls, New York, Michael Egan of Carmel, New York and Nicholas Rajo of Fishkill, New York; one great-grandchild, Alexa Williams, Wappingers Falls, New York.

Mrs. McKenna was born in Chatham, N.C., the daughter of Joseph S. Hodges and Mollie Godwin. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was a member of Lydia Sunday School Class.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Mary Palmer of Columbia, S.C.
TODD, Pauline
Pauline Todd, 86, died on the afternoon of Sunday, March 24, 2002. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock, Thursday afternoon, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the chapel.
Mrs. Todd was born in Chesterfield County, S.C., on July 1, 1915, one of five children of Broge and Ruth Brewington. A homemaker, she was the widow of James W. Todd.
Mrs. Todd is survived by her daughter, Elmer Pauline Peagler of Mt. Pleasant and her son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. (Barbara) Polson of Avon, Ind. In addition, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.
DENNIS, Sullie
HEMINGWAY, S.C. - Sullie Snipes Dennis, 93, widow of C. Judson Dennis, died Monday March 25, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Dennis was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late Charlie Thomas Snipes and the late Celia Tanner Snipes. She was a homemaker, a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church and attended Muddy Creek schools.
Surviving are three sons, Judy (Linda) Dennis of Brittons Neck, S.C., George (Ruth) Dennis of Wyoming, Mich. and Randy (Bonnie) Dennis of Hemingway; four daughters, Ella (Frankie) Harrelson of St. George, S.C., Louiser Parnell, Gloria (Al) Thompson and Emma (Mert) Poston all of Hemingway; sister, Linnie Fulton of St. George, S.C.; 42 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dennis was predeceased by 6 children, C.J. Dennis, Myrtis Powell, Thomas Dennis, Joe Dennis, John William Dennis and Annie Joyce Dennis; great-great-granddaughter, Haley Anne Dennis; four brothers, Verdie Tanner, John W. Snipes, Eddie Snipes and Carnell Snipes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the MORRIS FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL with burial in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Georgetown County, 2591 N. Frasier St., Georgetown, S.C. 29440.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
CARPENTER, LeRoy
LeRoy Dewaine "L.D." Carpenter, 69, of Bonneau Beach, a retired Texaco Lubricant Company employee, died Sunday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Carpenter was born November 16, 1932 at Charleston County, S.C., a son of Ralph J. Carpenter, Sr. and Emily Holseberg Carpenter Moroch. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Methodist. He attended Porter Military Academy.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Downs Carpenter of Bonneau Beach; son, LeRoy Carpenter of Bonneau Beach; daughter, Terri Hally of Bonneau; brother, Ralph I. Carpenter, Jr. of Knightsville; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Friends may call at Russell Funeral Chapel, Moncks Corner, S.C. from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Arthur Dale Mercy, 81, of Flat Rock, N.C. died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne Osborne Mercy, three daughters, Sandra M. Matthews and her husband, Gary, Daylene M. Altman and her husband Coley, and Trudy M. Brown. Step-sons, William Thomas Kennedy and his wife Martie, Herbert Anthony Kennedy and his wife Cindy, seven grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at THOS. SHEPHERD & SON FUNERAL DIRECTORS in Hendersonville, N.C.
