WALTERBORO - Elizabeth Vaughan Copeland, 95, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at a Summerville hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the graveside in Live Oak Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Lee Cothran and directed by the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Copeland was born November 26, 1906, in Cokesbury, S.C., where her grandfather, a Methodist Minister, was preaching. She was the daughter of the late William M. Vaughan and Iola Machen Vaughan. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Essie Loper Circle, and was an honorary member of Bethel United Methodist Church's Administrative Board. She was a retired school teacher, having taught 37 years, a past secretary to the S.C. Retired Education Association and member of the Pink Star Garden Club, where she was nominated for "Woman of the Year" by the Walterboro Council of Garden Clubs. She was the widow of James Henry Copeland.
Surviving are, a daughter, Jane Copeland Williams of Charleston, five grandchildren, Jamey Copeland and Steven Copeland both of Walterboro, Trent Copeland of Guadalajara, Mexico, Mark J. Williams of San Diego, Calif., and John Z. Williams, Jr., of Boulder, Colo., and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by a son, James H. Copeland, Jr.

Hattie M. Gilyard, 82, of Harleyville, S.C., died Thursday, March 2, 2002, at a Summerville hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, March 25, 2002, at 1 p.m., at St. Daniel UM Church, Harleyville, S.C. Interment will be in Dorchester Cemetery, Dorchester, S.C., under the direction of WAMER & CO. FUNERAL HOME of St. George, S.C.
Mrs. Gilyard was born in Jamison, S.C., on April 4, 1919, to the late Perry and Joella King Caldwell. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Harry Gilyard, Sr. Through this union 11 children were born and four were reared.
Surviving are, seven children, 76 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
DUNCAN, Charles
Charles L. "Billy" Duncan, 58, known at "The Peanut Man" died suddenly, Sunday, March 24, 2002, at a local hospital. Born February 15, 1944, in Conway, S.C., he was the son of Grover E. and Docia Duncan (nee McDowell). Billy was employed by Doscher Food Store for 22 years. He retired and then went to work at the Air Force Commissary for 13 years. Most recently he enjoyed helping his wife operate the peanut wagon at the Ladson Flea Market. Billy was also a funeral assistant with McAlister-Smith Funeral Home and always warmly greeted families and friends. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Sarah Mae Duncan (nee Lilly); two sons and a daughter, Grover L. Duncan (Vickie), Summerville and Charles Ray Duncan (Tracie), Moncks Corner; Michelle Shreve (Douglas) Moncks Corner; two sisters, Bonnie Shirah, Raleigh, N.C., and Myrtle Black, Conway, S.C.; five grandsons, Andrew Duncan, Brandon Duncan, Remington Duncan, Dakota Ray Duncan, and Devin Shreve; two step-grandsons, Joel Crisp and Jayson Crisp; and former daughter-in-law, Ellen Duncan Hunt, Goose Creek. EDISTO ISLAND - Virginia "Mud" Burrell Gowan, 70, of 6 Battery Park, died Sunday at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at Edisto Beach Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Neal officiating. Entombment will follow in Glendale Memorial Mausoleum in Walterboro, directed by the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Gowan was born in Williamston, S.C., a daughter of the late John Jarrett Burrell and Sallie Smith Burrell. She was retired from the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company in Greenville and was currently employed with Fairfield Resorts. Mud was a noted regional artist. She was a member of Edisto Beach Baptist Church, founding member of the Edisto Art Guild, a member of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce and Tax Accommodation Board, and was an active member of the West Ashley Bowling League.
Surviving are her husband, Garry C. Nale, three daughters, Becky T. Rose of Helena, Ala., Sherry Len Turner of Knoxville, Tenn., and Cendy T. James of Fountain Inn, a step-son, Gary Nale, Jr., stationed at St. Louis, Mo., a step-daughter, Erin Nale of Charlton, Mass., a brother, Rev. Dillard J. Burrell of Lakeland, Fla., a sister, Willene B. Spence of Bristol, Tenn., four grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.

JOHNSTON, Sr., Lee
HAMPTON - Mr. Lee W. Johnston, Sr., 62, of 810 West Poplar Street West in Hampton, died early Sunday morning in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Carnegie, Pa., on May 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Mae Cole Johnston. He was a funeral director with Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, was a member and Deacon at the First Christian Church in Hampton, and was an Air Force Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy H. Johnston of the home; two sons, Lee W. Johnston, Jr., and Mark Hammond of Hollywood, S.C.; one daughter, Debra J. Thomas of Fairfax; one brother, Clifford Johnston of Barnwell; one sister, Yvonne Hunt of Fort Meyers, Fla. There are three grandchildren, Jason Bradley Thomas, Phillip Daniel Thomas and Samantha Hammond.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, in the Hampton First Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Claude Hydrick and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME, with burial following in the Hampton Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday evening and until 10 a.m. Tuesday morning when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.
TISDALE, Melvin
KINGSTREE - Mr. Melvin Tisdale, 86, died Sunday in a Kingstree nursing facility.
Mr. Tisdale was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Walter L. and Leila T. Tisdale. He was educated in Williamsburg County Schools and was retired from Rogers Motor & Implement Company and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Tisdale was a World War II veteran. He entered the armed services with the National Guard unit from Kingstree. He served as an anti-aircraft gunner on the Queen Elizabeth. During his service career he crossed the Atlantic Ocean 37 times and the Pacific Ocean several times as well. Mr. Tisdale was an excellent golfer, avid hunter and fisherman who loved outdoor activities of all kinds. He was a gunsmith and gun collector. Mr. Tisdale was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Woodmen of the World. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Branson, Henry Hazel, and Elton Tisdale, and by one sister, Etta T. Phillips.
Survivors include, his wife, Grace B. Tisdale of Kingstree; one brother, Willis Ed Tisdale of Kingstree; one sister, Leila Maude T. Sanders of Columbia; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the graveside in Tisdale Cemetery, directed by WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME. The family requests that memorials be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church or Connie Maxwell Childrens Home.

Borgny Constance "Connie" Gerhold, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. died Sunday, March 24, 2002 in a local hospital. The funeral service will be Thursday, March 28, 2002 in J. She was Past Queen and Life member of the Milcah Temple No. 77 Daughters of the Nile, member of the Palmetto Court #1, Order of the Amaranth and member of the Charleston Chapter #56, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are one son, Harold J. Gerhold of Awendaw, S.C., one daughter, Judith Gerhold-Duke of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., two sisters, Lillian Morgan and Gladys Deitz, both of Long Island, N.Y. and one brother, John A. Borgen of Stuart, Florida, seven grandchildren, Ronald Gerhold, Randal Gerhold, Gregory Gerhold, Richard DeJonge, Bridgette Gerhold, Thomas DeJonge, Jill See, two great-grandchildren, John H. Gerhold and Terri Marie Gerhold, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Padgett was born March 6, 1910 in Round O, S.C., a son of Ivey Lewis Padgett and Emma Grace Harrison Padgett. He was a graduate of North Charleston High School in 1927 and The University of South Carolina Law School in 1956. He was a past employee of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, R. Harry Morse Real Estate and Insurance Company and was self-employed as an attorney for 34 years. In the formative stages of the City of North Charleston, Mr. Padgett served as a member of the Election Commission and was appointed Municipal Judge in 1973, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Padgett was a 33rd degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Travelers Protective Association, Sertoma, Jaycees, Exhausted Rooster, and North Charleston Optimists service clubs. Over the years, Judge Padgett served his community faithfully with the Cooper River Parks and Playground Commission and the Twin Rivers District of the Coastal Carolina Council of Boy Scouts. He was a Trustee of the Cooper River Memorial Library, a member of the Charleston County Board of Adjustment and of the local Board of Directors of the American Red Cross. Mr. Padgett was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church, having served as Vice-Chairman of the Congregation, Superintendent of the Sunday School, President of the Men of the Church, a member of Church Council and the Choir.
He is survived by three sons, C. Harold Padgett of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Ronald D. Padgett and Stephen M. Padgett, both residing in the Charleston area; a brother, Cecil O. Padgett of Folly Beach; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the VFW Post 5091 and the American Legion Post 179. He was a Submarine Vet of W.W.II and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Surviving are four daughters: Ellen D. Bensten of Hanahan, S.C., Suzanne D. Bone (Tom) of Charleston, S.C., Priscilla D. Burbage (Walker) of Ravenel, S.C., and Penelope D. Duncan (John) of Hollywood, S.C.; two brothers: Frank Worley Donaldson (Patti) of Homewood, Ala., and David Turner Donaldson (Jane) of Merritt Island, Fla.; nine grandchildren: Milton H. Pauline I. O'Rourke, 68, of #5 Warren Street, Charleston, S.C. died Monday, March 25, 2002 at her residence. Miss O'Rourke was the daughter of the late John Farrell and Myrtle Hook O'Rourke. A native of Charleston, she was a retired procurement agent with Charleston County Government (43 yrs.). As a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy-Charleston Chapter #4, she was the recipient of the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal, which is the organization's highest award. She was also awarded the Winnie Davis Medal and the Merit Award for her recent work with the Confederate Museum where she served on the Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Rebecca Mott Chapter, Colonial Dames-17th Century Charles Towne Chapter, First Families of South Carolina, South Carolina Historical Society, the 1st Vice-president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Charleston Library Society, and the Charleston Chapter of the S.C. Genealogical Society.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Susan Banks of Charleston, two nephews, Dr. John Maskell and Dr. Thomas Maskell, three nieces, Susan Banks Collins, Haig Maskell Powers, and Paula Banks Andrews, great-nieces and nephews, Nicholas Maskell, Vaughn W. Collins, II, Elizabeth H. Collins, Christopher S. Andrews, Alexis P. Andrews, and Katrina R. Powers. Joseph was born July 9, 1981 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of Stanley Parker Davis and Mabel Lou Sommers Powers. He was a member of Midland Park Baptist Church and attended Summerville High School. He was a steelworker with Eastern Technologies.

Davis of Summerville, S.C.; two step-brothers, Richard C. Padgett, Jr. of Summerville, S.C., Russell Lee Padgett of Charleston, S.C.; one step-sister, Tabitha P. Easterling of Summerville, S.C.; maternal grandmother, Hilda H. Sommers of Poteau, Okla.; paternal grandmother, Jo Ann W. Lewis of Heavener, Okla.; paternal grandfather, Sherl C.
