JONES, Charlotte
Graveside services for Mrs. Charlotte Chappell Jones, 96, of 805 Condon Drive, Charleston, S.C., who died March 31, 2002, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, Ga.
Mrs. Jones as a native of Lykesland, S.C., and wife of the late Mr. Marion Lee Jones and mother of the late Susan C. Jones, Mrs. Jones was the great-great-granddaughter of Revolutionary War Colonel and founder of Columbia, S.C., Thomas Taylor. At age 17, she was the first young woman in South Carolina to pass the Red Cross Lifesaving Course; at 18, she was the only female qualified to give the Red Cross examination. She attended Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Va., and was a graduate of the La Crosse School of Physical Education, La Crosse, Wisc. Mrs. Jones served as director of Physical Education at the YWCA, Augusta, Ga., and also at the Episcopal Girls School, Columbia, Tenn. While living in Columbia, S.C., during World War II, she was active in the USO serving the soldiers at Fort Jackson and was the leader of the largest Girl Scout Troop in the Columbia area. In the 1940's she established a summer camp, Camp Tryit for girls on Edisto Beach. During the 1950's, Mrs. Jones had the first children's TV program, "Let's Play School" on station WJBF in Augusta, Ga., which aired for four years. She operated a kindergarten in Beaufort, S.C., and began the first kindergarten on Hilton Head Island which was the forerunner of Sea Pines Academy, then she taught at the Montessori Kindergarten after which she returned to teaching physical education at Sea Pines Academy. She and her late husband were affectionately known on Hilton Head Island as the "Mayors of Folly Field." Mrs. Jones was a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two sons, Marion L. Jones, Jr., Edgefield, S.C., and Labon Chappell Jones, Florence, S.C.; a daughter, Patricia J. Hay, Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the graveside following the services. The family will be at the residence of Mr. Marion L. Jones, 62 Republican Road, Edgefield, S.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

RIDGELAND, S.C. - Patricia Strickland Padgett, 70, of Ridgeland, S.C., wife of Willie Quincy Padgett died Sunday, March 31,2002 at her residence after a long illness. She was born on August 27, 1931 in Tillman, S.C. a daughter of the late Marion McKay Strickland and Bessie Strickland. She was a charter member of the original Board of Directors of Thomas Heyward Academy, office manager for Dr. John O. Ryan for 30 years before retiring, and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Willie Quincy Padgett of Ridgeland, S.C.; three daughters, Sandra P. Kay of Greer, S.C., Bonnie P. Gainey of Hartsville, S.C., and Willa P. Born April 29, 1903, in New Haven, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Stampovicz Willis. She was a retired assembly worker with Gray Mfg., in Hartford, Conn. Mrs. Giknis was a member of the Goose Creek Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Giknis.
Survivors include, daughters, Theresa M. Carroll of Manning and Helen Cole of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Linda Skipper of Manning, James Cole of Wautuga, Texas, Bud Cole of Thornton, Colo., June Richardson of Billings, Montana, Barbara Weese of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Thomas Cole of Irving, Texas; 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Luther M. Bergen, 85, of Hanahan, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Heartland Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Born December 29, 1916, in Brigham City, Utah, he was a son of the late Luther M. and Marie E. Bjorndal Bergen. He was a graduate of Box Elder High School, where he played football and played in the band. He is a graduate of Utah State University with a BS Degree in Biology. Immediately after graduating, he joined the U.S. Air Force. After basic training, he was sent to England with the 8th Air Force. He completed 25 missions before being wounded. After his recovery he was sent to the Pacific with the 20th Air Force. After the war ended he returned to Charleston and took a teaching job at Murray Vocation High School. He received a National Science Foundation Scholarship to the University of Virginia where he received a Masters Degree in Education. He became Principal of Murray Vocation High School, later Moultrie High School and was the first principal of Wando High School where he retired from teaching. While he was with Charleston County School District, he served as president of Charleston County Education Association. He was also on Coastal Carolina Conference of Athletics Committee. He served 20 years with North Charleston Zoning Board of Adjustment. While in the service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, also a Certificate of Valor from the President of the United States. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Col. He is a past member of Retired Air Force Association, National Retired Teachers of Charleston. Also a past member of the Civitan of Charleston.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Bergen of the home; two sons, Luther M. Bergen, III of Spartanburg and Allen J. Bergen of Columbia; two sisters, Neoma M. Emery and Lucy Irine Earl both of Brigham City, Utah; a brother, Karl L. Bergen, of St. George, Utah; three granddaughters and one grandson.
The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to service at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, April 2, 2002.

Mr. Singletary was born on January 3, 1937 in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of the late Stephen and Aresa Wagers Singletary. He was employed as a dispatcher for Banks Construction and was formerly a volunteer firefighter for North Charleston and Goose Creek Fire Departments for 36 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Goose Creek.
Mr. Singletary is survived by his loving wife of Goose Creek, S.C.; two nephews, Stephen Rourke of Nashville, Tenn., and Jerry Rourke of James Island, S.C.; and three brothers-in-law, James Rourke of James Island, S.C., Autry G. Horne and J.P. Jackson, both of St. George, S.C.
