Verla Mae Thompson, who preferred to be called "Skip," was born August 3, 1918, in Akron, Ohio, and entered into eternal peace March 30, 2002, at the Medical University of SC. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles and Lillian Ballenger, and her sister Bernice.
During her lifetime, "Skip," was a prospector, fisherman, gardener, church organist, dog-lover and motorcycle rider, and above all, was "Mom." She began her working career at the Kresge Company in Akron. After many years as an office manager and bookkeeper, she retired from the Charleston Chamber of Commerce in 1988.
Ms. Thompson is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet L. and Harold L. Browning of James Island, SC. Her son, John L. Thompson, IV and his wife, Joyce, of St. Louis, MO. Grandchildren, Ella M. Browning, Harold L. Browning II, John L. Thompson, V, and Jessica Ann Thompson, granddaughter-in-law, Terri Browning. Great grandchildren, Harold L. Browning, III, Joseph C. Browning, Amy Forehand an Benjamin Hodges, as well as many good friends and neighbors.
Ms. Thompson was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. The Medical University of SC received her into the body donation program for research and teaching. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make a donation to the Medical University Health Sciences Foundation or to a favorite charity.
Services will be announced at a future date.

ROBINS, Sr., Ernest
Ernest Arthur Robins, Sr., 77, husband of Henrietta Gaillard Robins of Bonneau, S.C., died Thursday, April 4, 2002 in a local hospital.
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Arthur Robins are invited to attend the funeral services of the former Saturday, April 6, 2002 in Christ Episcopal Church at 3:30 o'clock. Interment will follow in Christ Episcopal Churchyard. Friends may call at Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel Friday evening from 4 until 6 o'clock.
Mr. Robins was born in Branford, Florida, September 7, 1924 the son of John J. and Renah Mae St. John Robins.
Mr. Robins was a retired Sales Manager with Southern Mill Supply (now Charleston Supply). He served in the U.S. Navy in W.W.II on the USS Hornet as a Radio Gunnerman on a SB2C "Hell Diver." He was a founding member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, served on the vestry and was a Superintendent of the Sunday School. In the 1950's, he hosted Radio and TV shows dedicated to hunting and fishing in the Low Country. He was a member of the Charleston Elks Club and Charleston Rod and Reel Club.
Surviving are his wife, Henrietta Gaillard Robins of Bonneau, S.C., two sons, Ernest Arthur Robins, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., William Gaillard Robins of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., one granddaughter, Lydia Fitzsimons Robins.
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 95 Folly Road Blvd., Charleston, S.C. 29407.

Dorothy Evelyn Hylton Laughlin, 74, of Summerville, wife of LTCOL William "Bill" Laughlin, USAF (Ret.), died Tuesday morning at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2002 at 11 o'clock in Bethany United Methodist Church, Spell Chapel. Burial will be in Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville. Friends may call James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 7 until 9 o'clock Sunday evening.

Mrs. Laughlin was born April 16, 1927 in Roanoke, Virginia, a daughter of the late William German Hylton and Mary Emma Mitchell Hylton. She was a graduate of Stewart High School in Virginia. She served as a flight attendant in the United States Air Force. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband of Summerville; one son, William Bryan Laughlin of Summerville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Laughlin and Lawton I. Limehouse, Jr. of Ladson, Marjorie Elaine Laughlin and Richard James Redden of Keeseville, N.Y., Mary Don Laughlin and Raymond Yeager of Singapore, Sylvia and Wayne Craun of Harrisburg, Va.; eight grandchildren, Justin and Jared Yeager of Singapore, Trey Limehouse of Ladson, Patrick, Danielle and Jamie Redden of Keeseville, N.Y., Trent and Brice Laughlin of Summerville; one brother, Robert Hylton of Fayetteville, N.C.; one sister, Helen Pringle of Virginia Beach, Va.; 8 nieces and nephews.

LEWIS, Paul
Paul E. Lewis, 73, of North Charleston, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his residence.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., on July 25, 1928. He was the son of the late Paul and Grace Lewis.
Mr. Lewis was a retired contractor. He was a member of Aldergate Methodist Church and a beloved coach of 25 years of baseball, football, and boxing for the Hanahan Parks and Playground.
He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Barbara Lewis of North Charleston, sons, Paul E. Lewis, Jr., of Houston, Texas, Gregory R. Lewis, of North Charleston, Jeff G. Lewis, of Ehrhardt, and Mark K. Lewis, of North Charleston, a brother, Roland Lewis, of North Charleston, two sisters, Ruth Hawkins, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Beverly Legette, of Hanahan, and eight grandchildren, Rob, Branch, Jessica, Brandon, Elizabeth, Matthew, Laura and Katherine.
The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, S.C.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials to Hospice of Charleston.

Daniel Eugene Massalon, died Thursday, April 4, 2002. Born in Charleston, he was the son of the late Henry Thomas Massalon and Pearl Conner Massalon Meyers. He was married to the late Mary Presnell Massalon for 66 years. Mr. Massalon was retired from the DuPont Company, a charter member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary who protected the Charleston Harbor during World War II.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sarah Massalon of Camden; daughter and son-in-law, Justine and Pat Patterson of Lugoff; daughter, Debbie Roberts of Camden; grandchildren, Lugene Patterson Huffstetler, Jamie Patterson, Deanna Patterson Cobb, Gwen Patterson Bowers, Jennifer Massalon Stimpson, and Deborah Massalon Cawthon; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Henry T. Massalon of Somerset, Ky. Preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Massalon Crosby, an infant grandson, brothers Joe Massalon, Jesse Massalon, and Robert Massalon, and sister Norma Massalon Baxter.
FARROW, Thomas
Thomas Ashby Farrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Farrow, died Wednesday in a Seattle hospital. He was born in Charleston on December 16, 1954, educated in local schools, graduated from Colorado College and received his law degree from the University of Puget Sound. Until his death he served as District Judge of Pierce County, Washington. He is survived by his parents; his wife, the former Lori Merlich of Gig Harbor, Wash.; three sons, Thomas G., Michael F., and Joseph P. Farrow; four brothers, John B. Farrow of Atlanta, Douglas F. Farrow of Gillette, Wyo., Robert H. Farrow of Charleston, and Alexander Q. Farrow of San Francisco. There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at the Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Ave.
