HUGHEY, Betty
FAIRFAX - Mrs. Betty Nix Hughey, widow of James W. "Bill" Hughey, died Thursday at a Charleston hospital after a brief illness. She was 69.
Mrs. Hughey was born in Brunson, May 2, 1932, a daughter of the late John H. Nix and Emma Chesser Nix. Mrs. Hughey had retired from the Allendale County Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She was an active member of the Brunson Baptist Church where she taught R.A.'s for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Chapter #65 in Fairfax. She was also an active volunteer with the Allendale County Relay for Life.
Survivors include, five sons, James W. Hughey, Jr., of Orangeburg, John H. Hughey, of Brunson, David E. Hughey, of Henderson, Nevada, and Jeffery H. and Jack H. Hughey, both of Orangeburg; two daughters, Betsy H. Atkins, of Fairfax, and Kay H. Norris, of Gaston; three sisters, Hazel Tompson, of Thunderbolt, Ga., Lil Parker, of Beaufort, and Marie Brant, of Brunson. There are 24 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 o'clock in the Harrison Cemetery near Crocketville. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Allendale County Relay for Life, or to the American Cancer Society. SMITH-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME OF ALLENDALE is in charge of arrangements.
DARNELL, Jessie
Jessie Marie Tant Darnell, 83, wife of the late Horace Darnell, of Bamberg, S.C., died April 5, 2002, at Bamberg County Nursing Center.
Mrs. Darnell was born December 18, 1918, the daughter of the late James H. Tant and the late Marie Melinda Darnell Tant. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bamberg. She worked for Bamberg School District 1 in the lunch room for a number of years.
Funeral services will be held April 7, 2002, Sunday, 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church with Rev. David Pohto officiating. Burial in Bamberg Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Lee Darnell, Brian Darnell, Justin Darnell, David Darnell, Kyle Smith, and Tommy Layden.
Survivors include, daughter, Betty J. Boyette of Ft. Collins, Colo., four sons, James E. and Becky Darnell, George W. and Brenda Darnell, Michael and Deborah Darnell, all of Bamberg and Charles L. and Tommie Darnell of Hampton, 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Horace Darnell, a brother, Gene Tant, a son-in-law, Charles Boyette, and a grandson, George W. Darnell, Jr.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2002, at COONER FUNERAL HOME. Family will receive friends and relatives at the home of James and Becky Darnell, 4085 Faust St., Bamberg, S.C. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bamberg.
ROGERS, Flora
MARION - Flora Adams Rogers, 85, widow of William Alvin Rogers, died Thursday, April 4, 2002.
Born in Dillon on October 10, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William Jackson Adams and Frances Smith Adams.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she was a former teacher of English at Gastonia Junior High School (Gastonia, N.C.), Marion High School, and Pee Dee Academy in Marion County. She was a charter member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women educators.
After her husband's death, she was secretary-treasurer of Rogers Furniture Company, Inc.
An active member of the First United Methodist Church, through the years she served as church school teacher, circle leader, trustee, a member of the administrative board and the commission on ministries. As church historian, she helped establish the church museum.
She was also a member of the Lantern Book Club, the Marion County Historical Society, Acacia Garden Club, and the Friends of the Marion County Museum.
Surviving are her son, William Alvin Rogers, Jr. of Abbeville; her daughter, Celeste Stone and husband Joe of Walterboro; and three grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, April 6, in Rose Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. Saturday at RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME.

CADDELL, Samuel
Samuel Aiken Caddell, 83, of Moncks Corner, S.C., a retired maintenance supervisor for the S.C. Highway Department, died Thursday in a North Charleston hospital.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2002, in the Hood's Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. Mr. Caddell was born Feb. 14, 1919, in Macedonia, S.C., a son of Samuel L. Caddell and Amanda Jane Powell Caddell. He was a member of the Hood's Chapel United Methodist Church where he was an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a graduate of Macedonia High School. He was the widower of Corinne Gaskins Caddell.
Surviving are, four daughters, Judy Roumillat of Charleston, and Sandra Ott, Amanda Caddell, and Bonnie Driggers all of Moncks Corner; two sons, Jeff Caddell and Ted Caddell both of Macedonia; a sister, Janie Alexander of Florence; a brother, Marvin "Pete" Caddell of Lexington; and six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James R. Noe, Jr. of Cope, SC; three daughters, Deborah Noe of Goose Creek, SC, Brenda McEwen of Charleston, SC, and Pamela Kelley of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Douglas Myers and Jackie Myers both of Maynardville, TN, J.B. Myers and Oren Myers both of Knoxville, TN; four sisters, Inez Treadwell of Chattanooga, TN, Pat Davis of Wachule, FL; Juanita Kneier and Ann Merritt both of Knoxville, TN; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

COLLETON COUNTY - Mr. Bennie L. Carter, Jr., 80, of 59 Joye Street, Ruffin, died Friday at Oakwood Health Care Center in Walterboro. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in THE CHAPEL OF THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Carter was born in Colleton County and was the son of Benjamin L. Carter, Sr. and Florine Lovelace Carter. He was a retired warehouse manager with The Marine Corp. Air Station in Beaufort. He was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church and a member of Southern Breeze Music Group.
Surviving are: his wife, Irene Rook Carter; one stepson, Ronald Lee Georgia of Bath, New York; one stepdaughter, Brenda Lee LeMacks of Ruffin; one niece, Mary C. Huggins of North Charleston; one nephew, Robert L. Carter of Dallas, Texas; and three step-grandchildren.

Until his death he served as District Judge of Pierce County, Washington. Mrs. McDougall was born on March 31, 1906, in Jefferson, New Hampshire to Frederick Gessner and Lillian Wallace. She married Edward McDougall in 1930 and was a homemaker for her married life. They made their home in New Hampshire until 1970 when they moved to Charleston. She was a member of First Southern Methodist Church in Charleston for many years where she served her Lord and Savior as church organist until 1996. Throughout her life Mrs. McDougall was servant to many and was loved for her kindness to all.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Clark of Arlington, Texas, and Kathleen Michielsen of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Russell Neely of Cedar Rapids, IA., Alex Neely of Atlanta, Ga., and Audrey Wilbert of Florida. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Audrey McDougall in 2000 and her husband in 1980.

HOLLY HILL - Mrs. Margaret Whetstone Evans, 97, of the Providence Community died Saturday at The Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Marcy officiating and Rev. Zach Farmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 3 PM.
Pallbearers will be Larry Shuler, Carlton Fraylick, O'Dean Hutto, Rusty Collier, Heyward West, and F. Edward Shuler.
Mrs. Evans was born September 20, 1914 in Rowesville a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Fairey Whetstone. She was the widow of the late Frank Evans, Sr., of Providence.
Mrs. Evans was a graduate of Columbia College. She taught in the public schools of South Carolina including Mellichamp in Orangeburg and Ben Tillman in Charleston for more than forty years. Even into her last years, she had the ability to recognize each of the children who had been part of her classes over the years. She was a Delta Kappa Gamma sorority member.
Mrs. Evans first came to Providence as a teacher in the 1930's. After her marriage in 1970, she returned to Providence. She was active in the community and as a member of Providence United Methodist Church. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class, and the Belle Bennett Circle of the United Methodist Women.
To honor her husband's memory she became active in helping research the history of the Evans family in Providence and her help was acknowledged by the author of Our Evans Heritage. She became very close to the extended
Evans family through that endeavor. She was an avid gardener and was most at home and at peace working with nature. This love of gardening did not end when she became a resident of The Methodist Oaks. She transplanted many cuttings from her family home in Rowesville to the grounds of The Methodist Oaks. She was affectionately known as "Butterfly" by those whose lives she touched through her kindness and love of people.
Survivors include two sisters, Gertrude Whetstone of Rowesville and Annie Whetstone Dunivant of North Charleston; a brother, Frank Whetstone of Deland, Florida; a sister-in-law, Estelle Whetstone of The Methodist Oaks; her granddaughters, Frankie Evans Locklair of Providence and Alice Evans (Geoff) Tennant of Tryon, North Carolina; her great-granddaughter, Karen Locklair of Providence; three nieces, Phyllis Pendarvis of Columbia, Joyce Flowers of Hilton Head, and Diane Yates of Deland, Florida; two nephews, Arthur Whetstone of Ooltewah, Tennessee, and Frank Whetstone, III of Deland, Florida; and three step-children, Patricia Scott of Pinopolis, Carson Evans of Charleston, and David Evans of Vance.
