KIMBEL, SR., Robert
Robert W. Kimbel, Sr., 85, longtime resident of North Charleston died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at his home. Born May 21, 1916 in Savannah, Tennessee he was the son of Hundley Broyles and Bertha Kimbel. Mr. Kimbel served in the U.S. Marine Corps during W.W.II. He retired as a supervisor from the Charleston Army Depot. He is survived by his wife Jarvis Kimbel; three children, Robert W. Kimbel, Jr., Goose Creek, Patsy Blizzard and Peggy Feltus both of Hanahan; two brothers, Luke Kimbel, Tennessee and John Chandler Kimbel, Tennessee; three sisters, Rebecca Ann Freeman, Tennessee, Louise Hambie, Tennessee and Maude Turner, Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Christie Lackey, Robert Kimbel, III, Clay Kimbel, Tammy Pfeiffer, Richie Richmond, Angela Richmond, Sydney Pitts, Annette Greenway, and Heather Byrge; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Carey was born in Colleton County, a son of the late Dan and Florence Allen Carey. He received his education in the public schools in Colleton County. He was a member of United House of Prayer for All People.

George Robert "Bob" Quattlebaum, Jr., 69, of Pineville, S.C., an industrial mechanic for D.I. Wilson Construction, died Thursday at his residence.

Mr. Quattlebaum was born August 4, 1932, in Saluda, S.C., a son of George Robert Quattlebaum, Sr., and Mary Louise Turner Quattlebaum. He was the former owner and operator of Quattlebaum's Grocery in Pinville. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of the Belle Isle Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of St. Stephens High School.
Surviving are, his wife, Jessie Lee Quattlebaum; two daughters, Rose Marie Jackson of Pineville and Dana Melissa Tucker of St. Stephen; two sons, George Robert "Robbie" Quattlebaum, III, and Lamar David Quattlebaum both of Pineville; two brothers, Godwin L. Quattlebaum and Ellis D. Quattlebaum both of Pineville; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

BARNHILL, Jr., Dudley
HEMINGWAY, S.C. - Dudley Joseph "D.J." Barnhill, Jr., 79, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in a Florence hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Barnhill was born in Georgetown County, a son of the late Dudley Joseph Barnhill, Sr., and the late Sara Clara Bullard Barnhill. He was a retired farmer and from the ASCS Office in Georgetown County, a four year veteran of the U.S. Navy during W.W.II and was of the Baptist faith. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau for 40 years, S.C. Farm Bureau State Directors, Board Chairman Georgetown County FSA Advisory Board, Georgetown County Planning and Zoning Committee, served on the School Board and other committees and was an active community member and was a graduate of Pleasant Hill High School.
Mr. Barnhill was pre-deceased by a son, Dan Anthony Barnhill.
Surviving are his wife, Dottie Avant Barnhill of the home; two sons, Dudley J. "Joey" (Lisa) Barnhill, III, and Jimmy (Angie) Barnhill both of Hemingway; five daughters, Gail (James) Creel and Josie (Louie) Tanner both of Hemingway, San Juana (Glenn) Morris, Marcia (Phillip) Owens and Susan (Sydney) Johnson all of Georgetown; special nephew, Ron (Lula) Collins of Georgetown; sister, Elmira P. Harold George Hempling, Ph.D., of Charleston, S.C., died Monday, April 8, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial services, Monday, April 15, 2002, at 4 o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Dr. Harold George Hempling was born May 21, 1926, in Richmond Hill, N.Y., the son of Jacob Hempling and Anna Pearlstein Hempling. He served with the U.S. Army during W.W.II. He retired as Professor Emeritus and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to his tenure at the Medical University, he was a Professor of Physiology at Cornell University Medical College, New York City. He served for five years on the Board of Education of the Bergenfield, New Jersey school system. He was educated at New York University, Oberlin College and Princeton University.
He is survived by his wife, Claire Hernick Hempling of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, William H. Hempling of Denver, Colo., Scott Hempling of Silver Spring, Maryland; one daughter, Leslie Hempling of Malvern, Pa.; two brothers, Norman Hempling and Col. Jack Hempling, U.S. Army (Ret.) and one grandchild, Thomas Emanuel Hempling.

Mr. Campbell was born in Florence County, S.C., a son of the late Cleo and Myrtle Turner Campbell. He was a member of the Pamplico Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea. He had retired after 36 years as a driver for Southeastern Freightlines. He had formerly been a resident of Charleston, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Hicks Campbell, of Pamplico, S.C.; one son, Richard Glen (Marie) Campbell of Charleston, S.C.; three daughters, Lisa Marie (Terry) Ward of Richmond Hill, Ga., Detria Lynn (Lynn) Hiles of Columbus, Ga., and Dawn Leslie Melosh of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Charles (Louise) Campbell and Tommy Campbell both of Florence, S.C.; three sisters, Ann (James) Matthews of Florence, S.C., Helena (Ira) Floyd of Effingham, S.C., and Lou (Ted) Vause of Timmonsville, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and a special friend, Ricky Todd of Pamplico, S.C.

Mrs. Mizell, widow of Robert M. Mizell, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002. Born in Minnesota, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Latikka, who were from Finland and came to the United States as homesteaders on the iron range in Minnesota. Mrs. Mizell was a homemaker and a member of Florence Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughtesr, Ruth Snead Truesdale and Peggy Williamson of Pelion, Harriet Berry Mizzell of Columbia and Roberta Hinson of Waynesville, N.C.; sister, Lillian Peltenon of St. Louis Park, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

GEORGETOWN - Gina Selman McCann, 59, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at a Georgetown hospital.
Mrs. McCann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 27, 1942, a daughter of the late Thomas William Selman and Shirley Ann Startsman Selman. She was an Attorney-at-Law and retired in 1999 from the Sturgill, Turner, Barker, and Maloney Law Firm of Lexington, Ky.
Mrs. McCann was a former Vice Chancellor of the Diocese of Lexington, Ky. She was a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Mrs. McCann loved the outdoors and was Secretary of the Iroquois Hunt Club.
Surviving are, her husband, John D. McCann of Georgetown; a daughter, Sarah W. West of Denver, Colo., a son, Timothy A. West and his wife, Lea W. of Lexington, Ky., a step-daughter, Molly P. McCann of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Judith S. Stinson of Lexington, Va., and Cynthia S. Murphy of Greensboro, N.C.; a step-grandson, Arran R. Walker of Lexington, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 11 o'clock, Saturday morning, April 13, 2002, in Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul C. Fuener.

George Cooper Gunnells "G.C.," of Bamberg, S.C., husband of the late Verdine Proveaux Gunnells, died the morning of April 10, 2002, in Richland Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gunnells was born December 2, 1915, in Govan, S.C., the son of the late Shelly Gunnells and the late Lillie Maxcey Gunnells. He was a member of Open Door Baptist Church of Bamberg, Hwy. 301 South. He was a retired employee with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Ornan Lodge #38, was a Sunday school teacher at Pentecostal Church, and enjoyed gardening and family activities. He was a member of the S.C. Army National Guard - Bamberg Unit, Civil Conservation Corp., in Mississippi and Virginia.
Funeral services will be held April 13, 2002, 11 a.m., at Open Door Baptist Church. Mr. Adrian Haigler officiating, assisted by Rev. John Carter, Rev. Robert War, Rev. Charles Readling, Rev. Paul Callicutt.
Pallbearers are Stephen Gunnells, Robert Blume, Ricky Blume, Randy Compton, Sandy Nettles, Ricky Brown, Chris Casey, and Gregg Hartzog.
Survivors include, son, Harry C. "Pee Wee" and Barbara Gunnells of Saluda; two daughters, Patricia G. and Harry Blume of Bamberg and Lillie G. KINARD, Harold
Mr. Harold Kinard, 79, of 78 Manker St. in Brunson, died Wednesday after an extended illness.
Born August 23, 1922, in Colleton County, he was the son of the late Archie Kinard and Janie Ulmer Kinard. Mr. Kinard was a self-employed farmer and was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church near Hampton. He was married to the late Nancy Crosby Kinard.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Kinard and wife Gwyn of Walterboro, S.C., Ronnie Kinard and wife Debbie of Johns Island, S.C., Carl W. Kinard and wife Mae of Brunson, S.C., and Randall Kinard of Houston, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Cook and husband Larry of Salsbury, N.C., Shirley Holleman and husband, Bruce of Columbia, S.C. There are 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Reynolds Bailey of Midway, Ga.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bailey of Summerville, S.C.; one son, Branden Shane Bailey of Midway, Ga.; one daughter, Emily Marie Bailey of Midway, Ga.; one sister, Michelle Saunders of Burlington, N.C.; two brothers, Brent Bailey and Chad Bailey both of Summerville, S.C.

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 11, 2002, Helen Hughes Pope, widow of John P. Pope, Jr. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Saturday morning, April 13, 2002 at 11 o'clock. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at STUHR'S WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Friday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock.
Mrs. Pope was born in Conway, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James Walker Hughes and Hosie Atillia Hughes. She worked for 15 years at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in the supply department from 1941 to 1956. She received numerous accommodations and awards. She was a member of Ashley River Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Conway High School.
Surviving are one son, John Dale Pope of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Lorraine H. Riley of North Charleston, S.C., and Mary Latus of Elizabethtown, Ky.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Pope was a wonderful and loving mother who will be deeply missed by her son and family and all who knew her.
