Lois Reading Smeds, 78, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Charleston, S.C., passed away April 16, 2002. She was born in Grand Forks N.D. on April 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Robert Elliot and Mable Clarke Reading. She as preceded in death by her daughter, Christy Lynn Smeds, and husband, James Harold Smeds. Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Jamie S. and Jonathan H. MULLINS, S.C. - Mr. Earl Wilbur Brown, 90, died Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at Little Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by COX-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Brown was born August 4, 1911 in Woodside, Ohio, a son of the late Arthur and Mabel Meregeuthaler Brown. Mr. Brown was a retired security guard. Mr. Brown was a Gideon and led devotions at the nursing homes in the Marion County area, having just led a devotion this past Saturday. He was a charter member of the Mullins Clothing Closet and was a volunteer for 10 years at the Marion Baptist Associational office, until the age of 87. Mr. Brown was a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Brown are 3 stepdaughters, Gethlean Hammer of Ohio, Betty Jo Jones of Nichols and Vallie Wood of Ohio, 5 step-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Brown was predeceased by his wife, Lurlene Rouser Brown and a stepdaughter, Shelby Gean Massey.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 til 9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Surviving are a son, Curtis Marshall Murdaugh of St. George, three daughters, Mary Ola McAlhany of Beaufort, Myrtle Bentley of Walterboro, and Judy Axson of Columbia, two sisters, Leona Crosby and Margaret Lindsey, both of Charleston, 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Elsa was born in Manhattan, New York, on January 20, 1947, a daughter of Amo Celli and Florence Messing Celli of Brentwood, Long Island, New York. She was the widow of Dominic Lisi and was preceded in death by a grandson, Allen Eugene Peirson, II.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her daughter, Maria Pierson of Summerville, S.C., two sons, Philip Chiuchiolo, Jr., of Hollywood, Fla., and Michael Chiuchiolo of Long Island, N.Y. Three sisters also survive Elsa, Florence White of Brentwood, Long Island, New York, Brenda Hunter of Tucson, Ariz., and Sabrina Corsione of Quoian, Long Island, New York, as well as her granddaughters, Jennifer Chiochiolo and Cara Mae Lisi-Pierson. The family is expecting the birth of a grandson, Daniel James Pierson.

James H. "Jimmy" Beckham, 46, of Cross, a department manager with the Berkeley County Maintenance Department, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
