BURBAGE, Mary
Mary Catherine Nelson Burbage, 81, widow of Horace Everett Burbage died Saturday, April 20, 2002. Mrs. Burbage was born Monday, January 24, 1921, in Charleston, a daughter of John Joseph and Susan Passarallo Nelson. She attended Charleston area schools and graduated from Murray Vocational High School. Mrs. Burbage was a Past President of the Business and Professional Women's Association and a longtime member of Stella Maris Catholic Church when she and her family lived on Sullivan's Island. She retired from S.C.E. & G after 35 years of service as a Right of Way Agent. Mrs. Burbage is survived by 2 daughters, Sue A. Alexander and Jade B. Matthews; 1 son, H. Louis Burbage all of Charleston; 2 sisters, Betty N. Dangerfield of the Isle of Palms and Helen L. Crowley of Tifton, GA; 1 brother, John Nelson, Sr. of Mt. Pleasant; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The relatives and friends of Mary N. CARROLL, Nathaniel
Nathaniel "Jack" Jackson Carroll, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at a local hospital. Mr. Carroll is the son of the late William Ambrose and Mary C. Brown Carroll. His wife, Marguarite Stump Carroll, also precedes him in death. He was a bookkeeping accountant and attended the Anglican Catholic Church. Mr. Carroll attended the University of Virginia and is a lifetime member of the UVA Alumni Association. He was a lifetime member of the Sons of the Confederacy, Thomas Jefferson Society, and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
He is survived by two sons, Richard S. Carroll of Plano, Texas, and Thomas W. Carroll of Columbia, SC, a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Dodson also of Plano, Texas, four grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, George Thomas Stump of Gainsville, GA, aunt-in-law, Myrtle Sowers of Christianburg, VA, Valerie and Jerry Braddock of Charleston also survive him.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 3:00 PM in the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, 150 Wentworth St. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to University of Virginia Alumni Association or the American Cancer Society. John Richard Hammett, Sr., 70, husband of Betty Jones Hammett, of Summerville, SC, died April 19, 2002.

Robert Hampton "Bob" Hicklin, Sr., age 66, of 138 Doodle Hill Rd., St. Matthews died Friday, April 19, 2002. Services will be 2 PM Sunday, April 21, 2002 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Thomas Huggins officiating. Burial in West End Cemetery. Pallbearers: Charles Coleman, Isaac Pendarvis, Griffin Miller, Jimmy Crosland, Mike Murrin, Steve Huffstetler, Ricky Edwards, Larry Cuttino, Bobby Hicklin, Jimmy Arant, John Bell, Arthur Fogle.
Mr. Hicklin was born in St. Matthews, SC, a son of the late O. Alex Hicklin, Sr. and Emma Crosland Hicklin. He was president of Hicklin Motor Line. Mr. Hicklin was a graduate of Carlisle Military School, Bamberg, SC. He was Director Emeritus of the South Carolina Trucking Association, a former member of the Advisory Board of Camden Military School. He was a former Advisory Committee member of the Midland and Calhoun Technical College Truck Driver Education, member of the ATA Safety Committee on Research and Environment in Washington, DC 1977-1981. He received Trailmobile Safety Director of the Year in 1975. Mr. Hicklin was a member of the American Trucking Association, a member of the Safety Council and was Past President of the Orangeburg Cattleman's Association. Mr. Hicklin served his Father's unexpired term as Highway Commissioner from 1981-1984. He was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Matthews, SC. Mr. Hicklin served in the South Carolina National Guard in 1953-1965.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Marian Pendarvis Hicklin, of the home; daughters, Mrs. Don A. (Winnie H.) Rickenbaker, Sr., St. Matthews, Mrs. James A. (Elizabeth H.) Gibbs, West Columbia; son, Robert H. Hicklin, Jr. and wife Carla, Lexington; sister, Mrs. Katherine H. Mr. Dunn was born in Charleston, S.C. on February 22, 1954 the son of the late John F. Dunn and Vera L. Dunn. He retired from construction as a pipe fitter. He attended North Charleston High School and was a member of Hanahan Baptist Church.

WARD, William
William Jackson Ward, Sr., 74, died Saturday April 20, 2002 at a hospital in North Charleston, S.C. He was born March 26, 1928 in Florence, S.C. A veteran, Mr. Ward retired from the U.S. Air Force as a crew chief. He was a Supervisor at S.C. State Ports Authority. He owned and operated Ward's Shoe Repair business for 7 years. He was also a painter with Laurentide. Mr. Ward was a Baptist, and he was a member of Masonic Lodge #401, Scottish Rite and Shriners. His father, the late Kelly Ward preceded him in death; he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nellie Ward (nee Rountree); son, William Jackson Ward, Jr., Moncks Corner; three daughters, Lena Gail McLaughlin Stout (Ernie Stout), Summerville, Greeta Jean Gowder Burbage, Summerville, S.C., Gwyn Sineath Kinard (Roy Kinard) Walterboro, S.C.; mother, Lena Mae Ward Kiker (nee Langston), Florence, S.C.; two sisters, Gloria Rowell, Florence, S.C., and Kelly Mae Howle, Columbia, S.C.; ten grandchildren including William Ashley Ward; 11 great-grandchildren including Terry McLaughlin; his sidekick dog Pepe and cat Tigger. PRESSLEY, Beanie
Funeral services for the Mrs. Beanie Mae Pressley will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2 p.m., at the Friendship United Methodist Church of Nesmith, S.C. Interment will follow in the Burrough Cemetery. Rev. Leonard Huggins, Jr., will conduct the religious services.
Mrs. Pressley entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 18, 2002, in the Williamsburg Regional Hospital of Kingstree, S.C., after an extended illness. She was born in Williamsburg County, July 8, 1917. She was the daughter of Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Fine-Dixie Cooper. She was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Alex Barr of Kingstree, S.C. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County, and was a member of Betheda United Methodist Church. She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Cecil (Bum) Pressley in 1940. They were blessed with 12 children. Her husband, and two children preceded her in death. She joined the Friendship United Methodist Church of Nesmith. She was a diligent church worker who served on the usher board for many years, and also a member of the United Methodist Women, Circle #4. She was an active member of the Beacon Light Chapter, #218 Order of the Eastern Star.
Those who are left to cherish her memory are four sons, Cecil Pressley of Melbourne, Fla., Thaddeus (Geneva) Pressley of Cades, S.C. Thomas T. Pressley and Jerome (Tony) and Patricia Pressley both of Nesmith, S.C., six daughters, Easter Lyons, of Camden, N.J., Christine (Rev. Mose Brown) of Hemingway, S.C., Minnie Pressley of Florence, S.C., Sarah Scott and Mary (James) Pressley both of Kingstree, S.C. Dorothy (Roosevelt) Graham of the home. A granddaughter she reared as her own, Ellen (Willie) Sumter of Hemingway, S.C. Forty-one grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, three step-sisters, Chrissy Barr of Texas, Rachel McClary of Kingstree and Janie Mae Barr of Hollywood, Fla.; three step-brothers, Hayward (Rosalee) McCrea of Kingstree, S.C. Mose Barr of Miami, Fla., and Samuel Barr of Camden, N.J., three additional daughters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

DUNNING, III, John
Mr. John Miles Dunning, III, of Greensboro and Charleston, died peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his home in Charleston.
We will celebrate John's completed life with a Mass to be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro. Interment will be private.
John Miles Dunning, III, was born in Charleston on March 2, 1931, to the late John Miles Dunning, Jr., and Vivian Parish Dunning. He attended the Citadel, and was the former owner of Guilford Galleries, Dunning Industries and Dunning Ltd. Mr. Dunning was very active in Greensboro Beautiful, a former member of the Eastern Music Festival Board of Directors, a member of Summit Rotary Club, and in 1968 was named the North Carolina Small Businessman of the Year. John was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, collected classic automobiles, and enjoyed woodworking and golf.
Mr. Dunning is survived by his loving wife, Linda "Sam" Dunning of the home; six children, sons, Gary Dunning and his wife, Kathy of Hickory, N.C., Larry Dunning and his wife, Patti, Don Dan Dunning and his wife, Mary, and John Dunning, IV; daughters, Janet Conger and her husband, John and Gail DesJardins all of Greensboro; a sister, Glenda Hauge of Charleston; two brothers, James H. Dunning of Greensboro and C. Wayne Dunning of Dallas, Texas; ten grandchildren, and his friend and first wife, Lois K. Wold of Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street and on Monday following the service in the St. Pius X. Parish Center.

SWEIGART, Donald
Donald "Don" R. Sweigart, 85, of Sullivan's Island, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born in Dayton, Ohio to the late Frank and Anna Claude Sweigart. He graduated from Steele High School and Dayton Art Institute and Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. He was an aerographer's mate during W.W.II in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired quality control manager at Litton Industries, then became the vice president for Carolina Packaging and was most recently a starter at Snee Farm Country Club. Don was a very active member of Stella Maris Catholic Church. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Rita G. Lang Sweigart, five sons, Raymond L. Sweigart and wife Kiki of McLean, Va., F. Charles Sweigart and wife Lynn of Winston-Salem, N.C., John A. Sweigart and wife Susan of Hendersonville, N.C., Mark D. Sweigart and wife Donna of Hamilton, Ohio, Matt G. Sweigart and wife Sabine of Grass Valley, Calif., two daughters, Marcia S. Russo and husband Leo of Mt. Pleasant, Mary Beth Baker of Kenly, N.C., two brothers, Col. Bert Sweigert, USAF of Alexandria, Va., James Howard Sweigart of Kentucky, a sister, Sr. Louise Sweigart of Arlington Hgts., Ohio and 12 grandchildren.
