Audrey Phillips, age 80, died Friday, April 26, 2002. She graduated from Bishop England High School in Charleston, S.C. and was the Co-Founder and Owner of the C.W. Phillips Sheet Metal Co. with her late husband. She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church. Preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles W. Phillips, Jr. in September of 2000, 2 grandsons, John Phillips and Charles W. Phillips "Chuckie", 1 sister and 3 brothers. Survived by a son, Charles W. III and his wife Katharina of Munsingen, Switzerland, 4 daughters, Yvonne and husband Michael Marlowe of Winter Park, Fla., Jane and husband Ronald Denlinger of Kings Mt., N.C., Evelyn and husband Mark Taylor of Cape Coral, Fla., Lucy and husband Jay Anderson of Dayton, 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, her dedicated and loving dog Alice. Elvie Brock Joyner, 83, of Cordesville, died Saturday at a North Charleston nursing home.

Mrs. Joyner was born March 13, 1919 at Marianna, Florida, a daughter of Walter Brock and Peggy Collette Brock. She was a member of Pioneer Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was the widow of John F. Joyner, Jr.
Surviving are two daughters, the Rev. Helon H. Phillips of Cordesville, Sonja J. Mulligan of Williston; son, Donald M. Johnson of Marietta, Georgia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

GEORGETOWN - James Durant Benton, 73, husband of Betty Jo Blakely Benton died Friday, April 26, 2002 in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 29, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. in Georgetown Pentecostal Holiness Church. Officiating will be Rev. Clide E. Glover, Sr., Rev. L.D. Driggers and Rev. Elvio Canavesio. Entombment, directed by GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
He was born June 26, 1929 in Williamsburg Co., a son of the late James Liston Benton and Eva Powell Benton.
He was a power house operator with International Paper, retiring after 47 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He also served in the Army National Guard.
He was a member of Georgetown Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a member of the Golden Youth Sunday School Class and the Men's Fellowship. He also was a former Deacon and Trustee.
Surviving are his wife; one son, James Edwin Benton and his wife Caron of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Dianne Benton Floyd and her husband E. Dwain of Georgetown; one brother, Melvin M. Benton of Georgetown; one grandson, James E. Benton, III and one granddaughter, Brittany N. Benton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smallwood was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Lavonia, Ga., a member of Summerville Chapter #143, O.E.S., a member of the Ladies Auxiliary #3142, V.F.W. of North Charleston, S.C., an A.A.R.P. member and also a member of N.A.R.F.E.
Mrs. Smallwood is survived by her husband of Summerville, S.C., a step-daughter, Nancy Jo Brooks of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Jo Ellen Brock of Lavonia, Ga.; and two step-grandchildren, Jennifer Brown and Adam Brown, both of Athens, Ga.

Richard Frederick Giersch, III, 67, of Charlotte died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at the home of his son in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 30, followed by a Memorial Service at Christ Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be at the church following the service. Mr. Giersch was born in Charlotte and attended Charlotte Schools, graduated from Darlington Academy, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. For the last 15 years he was active in full time lay ministry in which he touched many lives with the love of Jesus Christ. The ministries in which Mr. Giersch devoted his time, his faith, and his witness included leading Sunday worship at Southminster Towers, providing support to Crossroads Ministries, and sharing his faith and friendship with a number of seminary studenst and young ministers. He was also anactive member at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte and has participated in Cursillo and Faith Alive throughout the years.
Mr. Giersch is survived by his two children, his daughter, Mrs. Van Weston, and her husband Rich, of Pawleys Island, SC; his son, Mr. Richard F. Giersch IV and his wife Holly, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his brother, Van Giersch of Raleigh, NC; and his three grandchildren, Dalton, Taylor and Griffin.

SMALLS, Rosemary
God in His Infinite wisdom called Rosemary Smalls to eternal rest on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at 2:27 p.m. at The Hospice of Atlanta in Atlanta, Ga.
She was the daughter of Mr. Roosevelt Smalls and Mrs. Naomi S. Thomas. She was born on October 9, 1936 in Charleston, S.C.
She attended Avery High School and graduated from Burke High School in Charleston, S.C. She attended and graduated from The Medical University of South Carolina as a Registered Operating Room Technician. She was employed by The Medical University of South Carolina, Roper Hospital and St. Francis Hospital all in Charleston, S.C.
At an early age, she attended Emanuel A.M.E. Church and later became a member of the Catholic Church.
Rosemary was blessed with two children. One preceded her in death on August 15, 2000, Mr. Reginald Smalls Fordham.
Rosie as she is affectionately called by her family and friends was a soft spoken and caring person.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted and loving daughter, Miss Melanie D. Smalls of Huntsville, Ala.; sisters, Mrs. Louise Hunter of Charleston, S.C., Mrs. Delores S. Holmes of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Janie G. Thomas of Charleston, S.C.; granddaughter, Miss Demetria Green; grandson, Mr. Dejuan Fordham; a special friend, Mr. James "Geno" Greenwell; nine nieces, five nephews, 16 grand-nieces, 10 grand-nephews, a host of cousins and many devoted friends.

DEAS, William
William Bowman Deas, died on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Deas was born in Charleston, July 24, 1920, the son of the late Dr. Henry (Jules) Deas and Adele Bowman Deas. A lifelong resident of Charleston, he was a graduate of Porter Military Academy and the Citadel, class of 1942. Mr. Deas was a Captain in the 101st Airborne Division in WWII, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster as well as other decorations. He served in Operation Market Garden, was in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and in the initial force that captured Berchesgarten. He was on the Board of Directors Rotary Club; 1st Vice-President, Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors (Executive Council) Boy Scouts and Chairman of the Finance Committee; past president of the Albemarle Supper Club; Board of Directors, Carolina Yacht Club; Board of Directors United Fund and past Chairman of Planning Board - United Fund; National Food Brokers Association (formerly Lieutenant Regional Director); President Charleston Food Brokers Association; member of Charleston Citadel Club and Brigadier Club; St. Andrew's Society; New England Society, St. Cecelia Society; Board of Directors Gaud School and Porter-Gaud Alumni Association; Advisory Board of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist; President of Deas Brokerage Co., Deas Supply Co., and later President of All American - Deas Brokerage Co.; and he was a lifelong member of Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Mr. Deas is survived by his wife of 54 years, Geraldine Parker Deas, three sons, William Bowman Deas, Jr., Austin Parker Deas and Douglas Horry Deas, and one grandchild, Lee Parr Deas all of Charleston, S.C. He was predeceased by brother, Henry Deas and Jules Deas. Ester Bernice Ayer, formerly of North St., Bamberg, S.C., died April 28, 2002, at Lowman Home, White Rock, S.C.
Ms. Ayer was born December 3, 1927, in Olar, S.C., the daughter of the late Halcot Benjamin Ayer, and the late Winnie J. Kinard Ayer. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bamberg. She attended the Olar school system. She enjoyed bowling and participating in the Special Olympics.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 30, 2002, 2 p.m., at St. Johns Baptist Church, Ehrhardt, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery. The Chaplin Gary Lyerly and the Rev. Grady Walden officiating.
Pallbearers will be Hagood Allen, Jr., Hal Ayer, Kenny Richardson, James Miller, Harold Miller, and Bobby Richardson.
Survivors include, three sisters, Mildred Ayer Allen of Bamberg, S.C., Maxine Ayer Williams of Augusta, Ga., Ruth Ayer Bedoit of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Katherine Meek Ayer of Marietta, Ga., 17 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilford Earl Ayer, Jimmy H. Ayer, and three sisters, Elise Ayer Miller, Ethel Ayer Cook, Zelma Ayer Richardson.

DUNN, Jackson
Jackson Freeman Dunn, 87, husband of Nell Harper Dunn of Mt. Pleasant formally of Sylva, N.C., died Friday, April 26, at a local assisted living residence. Born in Charlotte, N.C., to the late Robert F. and Estelle Alexander Dunn. Mr. Dunn served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII, and received the Purple Heart award. He was a graduate of North Carolina State and a member of Sylva Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dunn retired from the Mead Corporation in Sylva, N.C. He was a member of several different organizations such as, the Foreman's Club within the Mead Corporation, Rotary Club of Sylva, Inner Church groups of Sylva, former member of the Jackson County Draft Board, and TAPPI (Technical Association Pulp and Paper Industry.) Throughout Mr. Dunn's life he always was a supporter of all blood drives. He is survived by his wife, Nell Harper Dunn of Mt. Pleasant, son, John F. Dunn, of Mt. Pleasant, daughter, Catherine Dunn Moses, of Whittier, N.C., three brothers, Joseph B. Dunn of Greensboro, N.C., Lewis Dunn of Burgaw, N.C., and Maurice Dunn of Charlotte, N.C., also a sister, Mary Dunn Kearns of Pleasant Garden, N.C., one grandson, Lauren Moses Dunn of Plano, Texas, also survives Mr. Dunn. George R. Williams, Jr., a devoted father, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 92 years of age.

He was born to Vermelle and George R. Williams, Sr., in Charleston, S.C., and lived in that historic city for 86 years. He graduated from Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston. He retired after 33 years of civilian service as a Budget Analyst for the United States Navy.
He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Carol Williams Ashmore, of Tallahassee, Fla., grandson, Tom William Conely, great-granddaughter, Sarah Conely, both of Huntsville, Ala., and brother, Julian T. Williams of Charleston.
