Ms. Nellie Ruth Watts Wherry of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. died Friday, May 3, 2002 at Charleston Nursing and Rehab Center. Wife of the late James Vernon Wherry, she was born in Clinton, S.C. and was the daughter of J.L.E. and Sophronia Wix Watts. A homemaker, she was a member of Brandon Baptist Church for the past 80 years. Ms. Wherry is survived by a daughter, Kirstene Wherry Rucker of Mount Pleasant, S.C., a granddaughter, Pamela Kirstene Bolin of Ocala, Fla. and two great-granddaughters, Bailee Anne Bolin and Meghan Deanne Bolin. Mrs. Speissegger was born on October 10, 1925 in Berkeley County, S.C., a daughter of the late Pete Bell and Lillian Cooper Bell. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of God of Prophecy. She was the widow of Benjamin John Speissegger.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Marchant of Summerville; two sons, Ben Speissegger, Jr. and Jerry Glenn Speissegger, both of Summerville; two brothers, Pete Bell, Jr. of California and Joe Bell of Yemassee, S.C.; four sisters, Susie Goddard of Summerville, Leah Page and Rosalee Tucker, both of Columbia, S.C., Rachel Tarpley of Charleston; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Mr. Bennett was born in Fort Benning, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army as an Artillery Officer of the one hundred first division. He graduated from North Georgia Military College. He also served in the National Guard prior and after his service with the Army. Mr. Bennett was employed as a jeweler.
Surviving are his parents; one sister, Marian Cummings and husband Steve of Dahlonega, Ga.; one niece, Amanda Cummings; one brother, Casey H. Bennett and wife Claire of Beaufort, S.C.

Lilly Baker Barnes died on the morning of Saturday, May 4, 2002 in a Charleston hospital. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 o'clock Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Lilly was born in Mt. Pleasant on February 9, 1923, a daughter of the late John and Anna Mollycheck Baker. She was a retired secretary to the president of Charleston Office Supply. A former organist and church secretary at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, a former member of Wando Baptist Church, Lilly was currently a member of the Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. She was active with the Hand Bell Music Ministry. Lilly was the widow of William A. Barnes who preceded her in death on April 14, 1996.
She is survived by three daughters, Debby Wolter of Mt. Pleasant, Dale (Haskell) Robinson of Savannah, Ga., and Donna (Jim) Rushin of Summerville, S.C.; her four sisters, Adelaide Boyd of Richmond, Va., Audrey Baker of Mt. Pleasant, Evie Atwell of Columbia, S.C. and Dot Brandon of Honea Path, S.C. In addition, six grandchildren, Jonathan and Jarrod Wolter, Amanda and Rebecca Robinson, Kelsey and Joel Durden, a step-grandson, Daniel Rushin, several nieces and nephews also survive.

RIDGELL, Lucille
Lucille G. Ridgell, 81, of The Elms Plantation in North Charleston, died on the afternoon of Saturday, May 4, 2002 in a local hospital. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. James Blvd., Goose Creek. Arrangements were made by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL.
Mrs. Ridgell was born in the City of New York on February 23, 1921 a daughter of the late Dr. F. Walter Gravelle and Lillie C. Smith Gravelle. She was graduated from St. Lawrence Academy and attended the College of New Rochelle in New York.
At age 13, Lucille discovered that her father's library contained numerous books regarding English and Russian literature. She then educated herself to gain an incredible knowledge of those nineteenth century authors. She also traveled extensively throughout the western world with her husband and assisted him in the production of many motion pictures. More recently, she developed a keen interest in Egyptology to add to her vast knowledge of the world.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Pinckney Ridgell, and her sister, Marian Gravelle of North Charleston, S.C.

MEDDICK, John
John Warren Meddick, 85, husband of Mary Jane Meddick of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., formerly Newport, N.C. died on Sunday, May 5, 2002. The family will hold a private gathering in his memory at a later date. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Mr. Meddick was born July 5, 1916 in Bay Village, Ohio. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and a businessman in Cleveland, New York and retired from Pepperidge Farm in Westport, Connecticut. He was married sixty years to Mary Jane Bryan of Berea, Ohio. He was the father of five boys, John George of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert James of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Thomas William of Mansfield, Conn., William Bryan of New Haven, Conn. and James Osborn of New York. His wife, sons, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild survive him allaying his greatest fear and marking completion of his proudest accomplishment.

HEMINGWAY, S.C. - Lionel Branton Perry, 80, died Monday, May 6, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mr. Perry was born in Hemingway, a son of the late Rev. Grady Perry and the late Meddie Altman Perry. He was a retired farmer and painter, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a member of the Outland Church of God and attended Muddy Creek schools. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Richardson Perry of the home; two sons, Dennis R. (Patti) Perry and Darrell L. Perry both of Hemingway; two grandsons, Doni L. (Joni) Perry and Nathan Lionel Perry both of Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughter, Brandy D. Perry of Hemingway; three brothers, Russell Perry of Johnsonville, Winston Perry of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Clinton Perry of Hemingway; five sisters, Erma Marsh of Statesville, N.C., Fairy Gregory of Durham, N.C., Shirley McBurnett of Summerville, S.C., Velma Miller of Garden City, S.C. and Theora Venters of Johnsonville.

WATSON, Jr., Robert
Robert E. "Rob" Watson, Jr., 28, of Baton Rouge, La., formerly of Pinopolis, S.C., a student at Louisiana State University pursuing his doctorate in Environmental Engineering, died Friday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner with Dr. Hal West and Rev. Mickey White, officiating. Burial, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be in St. John's Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinopolis.
Mr. Watson was born September 10, 1973 at Berkeley County, S.C., a son of Robert E. "Butch" Watson, Sr. and Betty Robuck Watson. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. He was an avid sportsman. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he played baseball from 1992-1996. Rob's wife, Erin, also a student at Louisiana State University, is pursuing her doctorate in forensic pathology.
Surviving are his wife, Erin Grindley Watson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; parents, Robert E. "Butch" Watson, Sr. and Betty Robuck Watson of Pinopolis; brother, Marty Watson of Columbia; two sisters, Erin W. Cohen of Mt. Pleasant, Ginny A. Watson of Pinopolis; paternal grandmother, Mrs. T.M.
