MCCOY, S. Mack
Seedo "Mack" McCoy, 69, died on the morning of Monday, May 13, 2002, surrounded by family, at his home in Ladson. His family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL. The funeral service will be 11:00 o'clock Thursday, May 16, 2002 in Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, S.C. followed by burial in Hick Cemetery, Coward, S.C.
Mack was born April 30, 1933 in Lake City, S.C., the son of the late Jacob D. and Lula Bell Miles McCoy. He was a retired auto mechanic at the former Exxon Service Center in Mt. Pleasant.
He is survived by his wife, Gennett Scott McCoy, four sons, Jody (Patricia) Watford of Darlington, S.C., Billy (Jennie) Lirette of Homa, La., Billy Crownover of Ladson, S.C., and David Crownover of Miss.; three daughters, Wendy McCoy of Savannah, Ga., Angela (Charles) Fleming of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Karin (Chuch) Boudreax of Homa, La. His sister, Rachael Christine Irby of North Charleston, S.C. and six grandchildren also survive.

MCCLURE, Elizabeth
HAMPTON - Mrs. Elizabeth W. McClure of 211 Ginn-Altman St., widow of the late James Q.A. McClure, died early Monday morning in the Bayview Nursing Center in Beaufort.
Born February 28, 1932, a daughter of the late Leroy Wynn and Lois Blocker Wynn. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters: Melanie Y. McClure of Hampton, Beth Busby of Columbia, and Mary Curran of Columbia, and four grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by one son, Thomas D. McClure.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday in the chapel of PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home and Wednesday until 11 a.m.

HOWARD, Fred
Fred Eugene Howard, Sr., 63, of St. Stephen, S.C., former owner and operator of Howard Rigging Company, Inc., died Sunday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. this Tuesday afternoon, May 14, 2002, in the St. Stephen Church of God. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the residence, 1011 Betaw Road, St. Stephen, until 12:00 noon and then at the Church from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service. Directed by the ST. STEPHEN CHAPEL OF DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Howard was born April 20, 1939, in St. Stephen, S.C., a son of Charlie A. Howard and Lottie Frances Wadford Howard. He attended the St. Stephen Church of God and was a member of the Steel Erector's Association. He was preceded in death by a son, Perry E. Howard.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Evangelene Hughes Howard; four sons, Freddie E. Howard, Jr., of Summerville, Tony C. Howard of Beaver Dam, Charlie O. Howard of St. Stephen, and George L. Hughes of Bonneau; a sister, Dorothy Olsen of Macedonia; four brothers, James M. Howard of St. Matthews, Isaac W. Howard of Moncks Corner, John H. Howard, Sr. of St. Stephen and Donald O. Howard of California; and 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

LARY, Mattie
Mrs. Mattie Mae Rolack Lary, 81, of 104 Franklin St., St. George, S.C., widow of J.B. Lary, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at her home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Bethel A.M.E. Church, St. George, S.C., with the Rev. J.C. Roberts, officiating. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery, St. George, S.C., directed by LING FUNERAL HOME, 5580 Memorial Blvd., St. George, S.C. (843) 563-3589.
Mrs. Lary was born October 12, 1920, in Chipley, Fla., a daughter of the late Robert Rolack, Sr., and Mrs. Minnie Lee Baker Rolack. She attended the public schools of Florida. She was a dedicated member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church where she served on the church choir, Stewardess Board and Cornerstone Committee. Prior to her retirement, she was an outstanding employee of the St. George Health Care Center. One daughter, Mrs. Abbie Jean Smith, preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Minister Gracie Hill of St. George, S.C., one son, George Larkins, Jr., of St. George, S.C., one brother, Sylvester (Catherine) Rolack of St. George, S.C. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family hour will be held 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Wednesday evening, May 15, 2002, at the LING FUNERAL HOME IN ST. GEORGE.

DOUGLASS, George
George McKenzie Douglass, 95, of Fripp Island, S.C., formerly of Canton Center, Conn., died Sunday (May 12, 2002). He was a ham radio pioneer and was active in ham radio from age 10 to age 90. During World War II, Doug served in the United States Merchant Marines as a radio officer on voyages to North Africa and Europe. He worked at the Chase Bank in NYC for several years then left to join the Travelers Insurance Co. of Hartford, where in 1948, he established their Bond Department, which he ran for 20 years until his retirement in 1968. During this time he was a founding member of the North Canton Ct. Volunteer Fire Department and active in the Hartford Gun Club and the Golf Club of Avon as well as a persistent ham radio enthusiast. Upon retirement he moved to Fripp Island where he became the first chief of the Fripp Island Volunteer Fire Department and the first chairman of the Fripp Island Public Service District. He also helped to found the Fripp Island Homeowners Association and took an active interest in the life of his community as he had done in Connecticut. He pursued his interests in radio, skeet shooting, golf, fishing, computers, gardening, boating and bridge and was continually cultivating friendships. He was predeceased by his first wife, Peg (Shields) Douglass and by his second wife, Maude (Van Buskirk Behse) Douglass and by his eldest daughter, Nancy Douglass Cloutier. He is survived by his daughter, Penelope Doyle and her husband Bill, as well as three grandchildren; Marji Rose and her husband Drew, Jennifer Burton and her husband Paul, Michael Doyle and his wife Angie and their child, Doug's great-grandson, Tyler Jacob Doyle. A memorial gathering will be held at Fripp Island at a later date. WHITFIELD, Grace

Mrs. Whitfield was born December 25, 1919, in Augusta, Ga., the daughter of George Dewey Daley and Ruth Bell Daley. She was a member of Dorchester-Waylyn Baptist Church. She retired from the Manhattan Shirt Company.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Melissa C. Benton of Wadmalaw Island, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn B. Benton of Wadmalaw Island, S.C.; three brothers, Edward N. Daley of Moncks Corner, S.C., James P. Daley of Goose Creek, S.C., and Walter J. Daley of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Emily Virginia Daley Payne of North Charleston, S.C., and Joanne Daley Lackey of Camden, S.C. She was predeceased by her son, William E. Benton and two brothers, George D. Daley, Jr., and William M. Daley.

RAMSEY, Sarah
She has passed from her classroom now; her curious mind and social style found delight each day on earth. Sarah Lefferts Ramsey died peacefully at her home in Aiken, after 90 full years. Descended from two early American families, the Adams and Lefferts, Sarah was the only daughter, among five loving brothers, of the late Elder Horace H. and Ella Adams Lefferts of Leesburg, Va. She was raised in Leesburg, where she was a high achieving student and champion orator. After graduating from the University of Delaware in the depths of the depression, Sarah began teaching elementary school. She soon married her late husband of 66 years, Reginald P. Ramsey of a pioneer Tennessee family. Sarah both taught and performed social work during the depression in Chattanooga, Tenn. She became the loving mother of two sons, Edmond and John. In 1941, Sarah and Reginald moved to Miami, Fla., where they spent most of their adult lives. They moved to Kalmia Landing in Aiken, S.C., in 1986, and spent their remaining years enjoying their grandchildren, traveling, and cultivating friendships and hobbies. Sarah was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy (a true granddaughter); ADK, and many social groups. Sarah was blessed with a keen mind and a great regard for other people and loved to collect and display early American glassware. Her deep love of history and family kept her in close touch with her brothers, nieces, nephews, and cousins spread across the country. She had touched the spirits of hundreds of young students during her teaching career. Having frequently accompanied her father, Elder Lefferts, as he performed services over a circuit of churches in Northern Virginia, Sarah was deeply religious in an unassuming way. As the prophet Paul said, she felt the spirit of God, not in tables of stone, but in the fleshy tables of the heart. Her only spoken regret was having outlived so many of her family and friends. Now, she enjoys wonderful reunions with the many long departed. Surely she is holding a wondrous playbill tonight! She will be sorely missed by her many friends, son and daughter-in-law, John and Johanne Ramsey of Charleston, S.C., grandchildren, Ashley Lupo and Andrew Ramsey, great-grandson, Ethan, and many nieces and nephews. As she directed, there will be no memorial service. The family will have a gathering with friends on Thursday, May 16, at 4 p.m., at the Kalmia Landing Clubhouse. Her remains will be cremated and interred along with Reginald's in a family service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, in the Adams Family Cemetery near Covington, Ga. Surviving are her mother of Charleston, S.C.; a beloved friend, "Popsie" of 24 years; two daughters, Pamela Faukner Welborn of Folly Beach, S.C., and Donna K. Millar of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, James Clyde Teston of Walterboro, S.C., and Charles Edward Teston of North Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Hazel J. Razeghi of Fairfax, Va., and Patricia Olsen of North Charleston, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Robert, Alfred, Charlo, Danielle, Eric, Erica, and Lisa, all of Charleston, S.C.

Born February 20, 1954, in Charleston, S.C., Mr. Roberson was the son of Lawrence E. Roberson, Sr., and Christine Menke Roberson Dewar. He was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Roberson was a graduate of Chicora High School, Class of 1972, and Baptist College, with degrees in Business and Management. He played Big Band music with Andrew Philen, Joe Clark Bands and various other bands. He played trumpet with anyone that called and played every Sunday afternoon at the American Legion, Post #147.
Surviving Mr. Roberson are his mother, Christine Menke Roberson Dewar of Ladson; sister, Dianna Brown and brother-in-law, Ray Brown, both of Bonneau; a niece, Michele McClung, a nephew, Les Brown, three great-nephews and one great-niece.

CORDELL, Floree
ANDERSON - Floree Elizabeth Taylor Cordell, 84, of 51 Lyons Street, died Monday, May13, 2002, at her home.
Born in Durham, N.C., she was a retired textile employee with Orr-Lyons Plant, and was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters: Patricia C. Ham of Charleston and Sara C. "Boobie" Shedd of Anderson; one son, Donnie L. Cordell of the home; one sister, Olga Haywood, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was the widow of Arnold Hamm Cordell and the daughter of the late John Taylor and Lizzie Hellams Taylor Ballew. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Cordell.
Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park by Dr. Wendell Bannister. The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family is at the residence.

Mrs. Baker was born in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Esther Abney Touchberry and the late Rev. Furman B. Touchberry. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church. She attended the Baptist College of Charleston and Anderson College.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Baker of Awendaw, S.C., her mother, Esther A. Touchberry of Garden City, S.C., her son, Robert R. Baker, Jr., and his wife, Kristen Clair, and her daughter, Page Lee Baker Murphy and her husband, Jerimy, both of Charleston, S.C., her brother, Tim F. Touchberry of Summerville, S.C., her granddaughter, Sara Clair Baker and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Furman B. Touchberry, her brother, Ricky Touchberry and a twin sister, Sandra Lou Touchberry.
