COLUMBIA- Deborah Kirby Nichols, 96, widow of Elsie O. Nichols, died Oct. 2, 1999.
Ms. Nichols was born in Spartanburg and was a daughter of the late J. Van Kirby and Rebecca Burgess Kirby. She was a retired sales clerk with J.B. White Company. She was a member of Bayview Baptist Church and was a former Sunday school teacher and choir member.
Survivors include one son, Sidney Kirby Nichols of Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Arthur Lee Kirby of Columbia. She was predeceased by a daughter, Emma Burgess .
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Bayview Baptist Church. Interment will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Ms. Nichols will be placed in the church at 9 a.m.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Talbert-Shives Funeral Home.

Charles H. Young
Retired from Lockhart Power
WILKESBURG- Charles H. Young, 61, of 2912 Cassels Road, Wilkesburg Community, Chester, widower of Bobbie Porter Young, died at his home Oct. 3, 1999.
Mr. Young was born in Wilkesburg on March 6, 1938, a son of the late Samuel J. and Bertha Gaston Young. He was a member of the Wilkesburg Baptist Church. Mr. Young was a graduate of Chester High School, class of 1956 and was retired from Lockhart Power Company.
Surviving are two brothers, Doc Young of Lockhart and Robert Young of Wilkesburg.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilkesburg Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Hoyle Vinson.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-8:30
The family will be at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to West Chester Baptist Church, 1898 Pinckney Road, Chester, S.C. 29706.

Charles R. Gowan Sr.
Retired supervisor
with city water works
Charles Richard Gowan Sr., 69, of 1023 Meansville Road, husband of Helen Tucker Gowan, died Feb. 26, 2001 at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Gowan was born in Spartanburg on Aug. 11, 1931, a son of the late Walter Richard and Willie Mae Adams Gowan. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge #75 and was a former member of several musical bands.
He was a 1951 graduate of Union High School and was retired from the City of Union Water Works as a supervisor. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles R. Gowan Jr. of Union and Alan Lee Gowan and Pam Gowan of Union; a sister, Patricia G. Hicks of Union; and three grandsons, David and Danny Gowan of Union and Stacy Gowan of Beauford.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Adkins, the Rev. Ron Culberson and the Rev. Ken Snead. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church Thursday at 2 p.m.
The family is at the home, 1023 Meansville Road, Union.

James Allan Hicks III
LEXINGTON - James Allan Hicks III, infant son of Allan and Karen Hicks died Feb. 24, 2001.
Surviving are his parents of Lexington; sisters Haley, Kalynn and Alaina, also of Lexington; maternal grandmother, Irene Williams of Union; paternal grandmother, Mickey Walkup of Timmonsville; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hicks of Columbia.
Baby Allan was preceded in death by his grandfathers Guy Williams and Wallace Walkup.
Private memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Children's Home.

Charles Ray Vanderford
Union native
BUFFALO - Charles Ray Vanderford, 59, of 137 Riley Road, husband of Martha Watts Vanderford, died Feb. 24, 2001 at 9:10 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Vanderford was born in Union on May 6, 1941, a son of the late Malcomb J. Vanderford and Bonnie Wilkie Vanderford. He was formerly employed with Cross Body and Fender Shop in Rock Hill. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Jerri Varner of Buffalo; two brothers, Malcomb Vanderford of Union and Robert Vanderford of Buffalo; five sisters, Betty Bates and Jo Ann Farmer, both of Union, Fannie Garcia of Mantica, Calif., Linda Spillman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Margie Thomasson of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Padgett's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Jerri Varner, 124 Pine St., Buffalo.

Annie L. Richard

Annie L. Richard, 80, of 409 West Henrietta St., died Dec. 28, 2002, at her home. She was born on March 30, 1922, a daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Lipscomb Richard in Union County.
Surviving are a daughter, Bessie Mae Richard of Union; one brother, Henderson Richard of Patterson, N.J.; and two sisters, Betty Rose Sims and Josephine Moody both of the home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. A.L. Brackett and Rev. James Richard. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 12 noon to await the hour of service. Viewing will be today from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robert Lee Thomas
World War II veteran
Robert Lee Thomas, 81, of 193 Thomas Ranch Road, died Dec. 29, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Thomas was born in Union County on Sept. 5, 1921, a son of the late Leo and Ila Thompson Thomas. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Lockhart Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Grace Thomas (Frank) Wilson of Union; three brothers, Russell Thomas and Frank (Willie) Goode of Union, and John D. Worthy of Chester; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lockhart Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. George Sims.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be held today from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
The family is at the home of his sister, Grace T. Wilson, 139 Thomas Ranch Road, Lockhart. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Farr Fincher
Former maintenance supervisor
Ernest Farr Fincher, 88, of 600 34th St., Northport, Ala., widower of Madrid Smith Fincher, former residents of Union, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at 10:30 p.m. in DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mr. Fincher was born in Union on Nov. 8, 1915, a son of the late Jesse and Eugenia Gregory Fincher. He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Fincher was retired maintenance supervisor for the Union County School system.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Hazel F. Sanders and Lewis T. Sanders of Northport, Ala.; two grandchildren, Ronald Lewis Sanders and Kimberly Lynn Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer Sanders and Caroline Smith. Mr. Fincher was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers, Mary Jines, Annie Garner, Ben Fincher, Charlie Fincher, Arthur Fincher, Furman Fincher and Wallace Fincher.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. The family will be at the home of Richard and Shelby Sanders, 1662 Jonesville Highway, Jonesville. Matthew Paris
Former Union resident
Willis Matthew Paris, 19, of Beaumont Ave., Spartanburg, former resident of Union, died in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003. Mr. Paris was born in Spartanburg on April 15, 1984, a son of Lloyd M. Paris Jr., of Union and Shirley Moore Simmons of Una. He was a former member of the Mountain View Baptist Church of Cowpens. He was a 2002 graduate of Union High School and was employed with Pet Dairy.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his step-mother, Lucinda Paris of Union; his step-father, Ronnie Simmons of Una; a brother, Mark Anthony Paris of Union; a half-brother, Stephen James Warr of Union; his paternal-grandmother, Brenda Paris of Carlisle; two step-sisters, Jennifer Poteat of Boiling Springs and Carol Locke of Union; two step-brothers, Joe Kotewa of Campobello and Ken Kotewa of Michigan and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be at held 2 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family will be at the home of his aunt, Connie Crocker, 1214 Santuc Drive, Santuc. Laura Skatell

MT. PLEASANT Entered into eternal rest on the morning of Dec. 30, Laura Hoke Skatell, wife of Tony Skatell, residence Isle Of Palms. The relatives and friends of Mr. & Mrs. Tony Skatell are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 12 noon.
Interment Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's Mt. Pleasant Chapel between 5 and 7 Friday. Mrs. Skatell was born May 15, 1956 in Augusta, Ga., daughter of Harold R. Hoke, Sr. and Alice Pitts Hoke. She was a fashion director of J.B. Whites in Greenville, co-owner of Skatell's Manufacturing Jewelers in Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Charlotte, N.C. She was a gifted business woman, entrepreneur, devoted wife, mother, daughter and cherished by all of her friends.
Mrs. Skatell graduated from Eastside High School in Greenville in 1974, 1974 Homecoming Queen of Clemson University and 1976 Miss S.C. Textile Queen. She was a Junior League former board member, Fashion Show Chair and a "Whale of a Sale" chairperson. She was director for the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation from 1999-2002 and volunteer of the year 1998.
Mrs. Skatell was volunteer for Race For The Cure 1994 event and sponsored an annual fund raising event to collect presents and toys for Debbie's Kids. She was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, member and volunteer of numerous community boards, and founding and life member of the Harbour Club.
Surviving are her husband, Tony and two sons: Joey and Alex Skatell of Isle of Palms; one daughter: Kristen L. Skatell of Isle of Palms; her mother, of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers: Harold R. Hoke Jr. of Rock Hill and Ray Pitts Hoke of Shelby, N.C. Frances B. Weaver

ROCK HILL Frances B. Weaver, 70, of 303 Green Bay Drive, Rock Hill, died at her residence Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003. A native of Woodruff, she was the daughter of the late Harry Springfield Blackwell and Annie Zora Huggins Blackwell. She was a retired retail sales clerk with Plej's with 20 years of service and formerly worked at the Dollar General Store in the Museum Road Shopping Center. She was a volunteer pink lady at Piedmont Medical Center and a member of Oakwood Acres Baptist Church. She was the widow of Billy H. Holland and James W. Weaver.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy Holland Settlemyer, Kay Holland Baker and Barbara Weaver Sims, all of Rock Hill; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be today from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill and at other times at the home. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel by the Rev. Robert Alford assisted by Jerry Devinney.

Walter Mitchell
Union native
GALIVANTS FERRY Walter Mitchell, 61, died Dec. 31, 2002, at Conway Hospital after an illness. Mr. Mitchell was born in Union, a son of the late William McDaniel and Margaret Mitchell.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Gail P. Mitchell of the home; a son, Buddy McDaniel Mitchell of Galivants Ferry; two daughters, Rhonda Mitchell of Lake View and Angela M. Cooke of Conway; one brother, Frankie Dale Mitchell of Union; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Fork Baptist Church in Fork. Burial will be in the Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Galivants Ferry. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at the funeral home. Cook Funeral Home, Lake View, has charge of arrangements.

Sarah Noland
Retired from City of Union
Sarah Noland, 71, of 1108 South Pinckney Street, died Jan. 2, 2003, at 9:36 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Miss Noland was born in Union on April 1, 1931, a daughter of the late George Stoud and Pearl Keisler Noland. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Miss Noland was a graduate of Union High School Class of 1949 and was retired records clerk for the City of Union.
Surviving are a nephew and his wife, George and Nancy Faucette of Shelby, N.C.; and a niece, Brandy Faucette of Columbia. Miss Noland was predeceased by a sister, Molly N. Faucette; a brother, George Russell Noland; and a nephew, Jimmy Faucette.
The family is at the home of her nephew, George Faucette, 1201 W. Main St., Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Adell V. Baldwin
Retired from Lockhart Mill Adell Vinson Baldwin, 81, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union, widow of John William (Willie) Baldwin, former resident of Lockhart, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at 5:40 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Baldwin was born in Union County on Aug. 25, 1922, a daughter of the late Joseph Tiney Vinson and Mammie Smith Vinson. She was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John Wayne and Peggy Baldwin, and David F. and Elisa Baldwin, all of Union; a daughter, Linda Gail Baldwin White of Columbia; a sister, Ruby Vinson Harris of Union; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Lucille Vinson Roark, Joe Vinson, Ezell Vinson and Earl Vinson.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m Sunday at the Lockhart Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles and the Rev. Richard Conyers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:30 until 9. The family will be at their respective homes. The S.R. James D. Callahan
Retired from Milliken & Co.
SPARTANBURG James D. (J.D.) Callahan, 87, of 501 Camelot Drive, Spartanburg, widower of Leila B. Callahan, former resident of Union, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Callahan was born in Shelby, N.C. on Dec. 30, 1916, a son of the late R. E. and Ada Skinner Callahan. He was a former longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Union and a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Mr. Callahan attended Gardner-Webb College and was retired personnel manager and director for Milliken & Co.
Surviving are a granddaughter, Parker Knapp of Greer; a grandson, William F. (Will) Derrick Jr. of Seneca; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Knapp and Sarah Callahan Knapp, both of Greer, Brianna Derrick and Katherine Derrick, both of Seneca; four sisters, Marian Jolley and Nell Fox, both of Mooresboro, NC, Barbara Croff of Fair Play, and Betty Poteat of Lattimore, N.C. Mr. Callahan was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Callahan Derrick.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Union conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joseph Smith, the Rev. Bill Adams and the Rev. Sal Barone. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at the First Baptist Church from 1:30 until 2:45 Sunday afternoon prior to the service.
