William Heyward Bill Huffstetler was born in Chapin, South Carolina, on July 19, 1924, a son of the late William Rayford Huffstetler and Ella Rose Shealy Huffstetler. After graduating from Chapin High in 1941, he went on extended active duty with the United States Navy to serve in WWII aboard the USS Baxter and the USS Wachaprague in the South Pacific. His military occupational specialty was Higgins Boat LCVP Crewman, transporting landing forces from ships to invasion beaches, and he saw extensive action in Pacific Island invasions.
After being honorably discharged in 1946 he continued in the US Naval Reserve, but transitioned to the newly formed SC Air National Guard at the outset of the Korean War. Bill found his niche with the SCANG, where he started out as a full-time Aircraft Maintenance Technician and continued into a 30-year career to retire as the senior non-commissioned officer at McEntire Air National Guard Base. During this time he was called to active duty in both the Korean War and the Berlin Crisis and served the nation's defense in the Strategic Air Command.
Over his lengthy service with SCANG, there were many outstanding events. In 1955 he was selected as a team member to participate in the great shootout in Casper, WY, which pitted the South Carolina F-80 ACFT against other types of ACFT. The SCANG team won the trophy for outstanding maintenance.
In 1959 the team accepted an invitation, on behalf of the SCANG and the USAF, to join the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in air flights over the Canadian World's Fair. Proudly, they flew six F-104s to Trenton Station, Canada, and for five days, made two flights a day over Ontario, Canada.
In 1965 the SCANG team was again selected to represent the Air National Guard in a worldwide shootout, known as William Tell, competing against all units that flew F-101s, F-102s, F-104s or F-106s. All units flew from US or foreign airbases to Tyndal AFB in Panama City, FL. This time the South Carolina team, flying F-102s, came out on top and Bill was presented as team chief the top award for Excellence in Team Maintenance.
Bill retired from the South Carolina Air National Guard on July 18, 1984. Besides the South Pacific, he saw service in the Guard in Panama, Norway, Sweden, Spain, England, and Portugal. His many awards and decorations include the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars (Bataan Peninsula and Okinawa), World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hour glass devices, Air Force Meritorious Service Award with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars (Leyte and Luzon), Exceptional Service Medal, Active State Service Medal and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
