Sonny Smith

LUGOFF - Funeral service for Henry Walter “Sonny” Smith, Jr., 72, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Blaney Baptist Church with burial to follow in Miles Family cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blaney Baptist Church, video and multi-media fund.
Mr. Smith died Saturday, July 7, 2007. born in Darlington, he was the son of the late Henry W. Smith, Sr. and Golder Arnold Smith Jordan. A graduate of St. Johns High School in Darlington, he received his Bachelors of Art Degree in English from Wofford College. His career consisted of being a Sports Writer for Wofford College, Assistant Sports Editor for the Spartanburg Journal, Sports Editor for Rockhill Herald, Sports Writer for WBTW T.V. in Florence, and Editor for the S.C. Department of Agriculture – Market Bulletin.
Mr. Smith was a founding member of the Elgin Catfish Stomp Committee, a former member of the LIONS Club in Elgin, and a member of the Elgin 39ers. He served on the Board of Directors for Fairfield Electric Co-op, Board of Trustees for CEE-US, Board of Directors for Blue Ridge Village and Board of Directors for Ocean Villas. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed photography, being a contributing writer for publicity of church and community activities, and spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.
He was a member of Blaney Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, a member of the Median Adult Sunday School Class, and served on numerous committees.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Lynette Miles Smith; sons and daughters-in-law, Walt Smith, Miles and Windy Smith, and Greg and Janette Smith, all of Lugoff; grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Peggy, Julie, Ariel, Scott, Zachary, and Becca Smith; and aunt, Frances Arnold of Darlington, S.C.
Genevieve G. Jay

Mrs. Jay, wife of the late Ruben Harlan Jay, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007. born in Lamar, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Viola Amerson Galloway. She was a charter member of Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church and was a former member of the Wateree Mothers Club. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, and taking care of her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Patricia Belk and her husband, Leroy of Lugoff, Ruben Jay, Jr. and his wife, Millie of Lugoff, Richard Jay his wife, Minerva of Lugoff, Randy Jay and his wife, Debi of Lugoff, and Bill Jay and his wife, Pam of Wake Forest; sister, Marie Dodge; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Sallie Nelson.

Surviving are his parents, Russell Carter and Amber Langley; grandparents, Tom and Jessie Carter, Suzanne Amodio, Ricky and Pamla Brown, and Ricky Langley; great-grandparents, James and Laura Carter, Angelo “Tony” and Margaret Amodio, and Gene and JoAnn Langley; cousins, Miranda Brakefield, Caleb Watkins, Breauna and Christian Beebe; numerous second cousins; many loving family members; and countless caring friends. Mrs. Vinson died Monday, November 19, 2007. born in Camden, she was a dedicated daughter of the late Hollis Mendal Vinson, Sr. and Joan White Vinson, whom she cared for until their passing. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sons, George E. Miller, Jr. of Cayce, S.C., and Eric A. (Jennifer) Miller of Ft. Edward, N.Y.; brother, Hollis Mendal (Talayna) Vinson, Jr. of Camden; and grandchildren, Jordan Ashley Miller and Lanie Anne Miller.

Mr. Deal died Monday, November 12, 2007. born in Camden, he was a son of Barbara Ann Abercrombie and the late Robert Mickle Deal. He had a life-long career of working on boats and performed numerous under water rescues.
Surviving are his mother of Newberry; his lifelong companion, Francine Madge Baker and her daughter, Elizabeth Baker; sisters, Judy Wright and her husband Jerry of Crosshill, and Linda Deal of Wyoming; sister-in-law, Joan Deal of Lugoff; nieces, Nikki Wright, Connie Dodmead, Chrystal Olfs; and nephew, Clay Wright. He was predeceased by a brother, Carroll Deal.

Mrs. Miles, wife of 57 years to the late Fred Miles, died Monday, October 22, 2007. born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Nezzie Martin Goff. She retired from Capital City Manufacturing Company as a seamstress. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Jean Bowen Circle. She enjoyed gardening and canning. She also enjoyed making homemade soap, quilts, dolls and stuffed animals.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, C. Ray and Patsy Miles of Lugoff, and Kenny and Fannie Miles of Lugoff; daughter, Lynette Miles Smith of Lugoff; grandchildren, Rajena Miles, Robert Miles, Walt Smith, C.R. (Debbie) Miles, Jr., John (Margaret) Miles, Miles (Windy) Smith, Greg (Janette) Smith, Kevin (Christy) Miles, and Shannon Miles (Chris) Smith; step-grandchildren, Sherry (Bill) Kistler and Suzanne (Keelan) Jones; seventeen great- grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; and one step-great great grandchild.
