Lois R. Jones
Jonesville native

SPARTANBURG Lois Reeves Jones, 92, of White Oak Estates, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born in Jonesville, she was the daughter of the late Charles Lester Reeves and Mary Lucinda Carter Reeves. A 1928 graduate of Jonesville High School, Mrs. Jones worked with the Bank of Jonesville for eight years prior to moving to Spartanburg in 1943.

Retiring from Exxon Oil Company in 1968 with 25 years of service, she later worked as a financial secretary at Evans Junior High School for five years. Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of the Fernwood Baptist Church, the A.L.F. Sunday School Class, the Women's Missionary Union and the Mission Action Circle.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Ernest Jones on June 18, 1985; three sisters, Mrs. Ellis (Overa) Page, Mrs. Pierce (Myrtle) Morris, and Mrs. Lewis (Louise) Evans; and five brothers, Charles Lester Reeves Jr., John B. Reeves, William Carter Reeves, Zack Reeves and J. Manley Reeves.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Heyward (Lunelle Cox) Comer of Spartanburg and 28 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fernwood Baptist Church conducted by Dr. P. Randall Wright. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Fernwood Baptist Church, 200 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, S.C. 29307.

Serving as pallbearers will be Timothy Page, Jonathan Adams, Frank Morris, Larry Morris, Scott Cox and Phillip Cox. Family and friends are invited to participate in a covered dish luncheon to follow the interment. Your dishes will be received in the dining hall of the church prior to the service. Family members will be at their respective homes. Lanford-Dunbar Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

George A. Royster III
Union native George

Albert (Dickie) Royster, III, 63, of East Tawas, Mich., former resident of Union, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Royster was born in Union on Dec. 31, 1940, a son of the late George A. Royster II and Cecille Johns Royster. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. Mr. Royster was a graduate of Union High School where he was a member of the first golf team at Union High School and a member of the first male chorus.

Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Brenda R. and Ronnie Lawson of Putman Community, a brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Marsha Royster of Union; two daughters, Stephanie Slyter of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Christine Brewer of Kansas City, Kan.; a son, Richard Royster of Saginaw, Mich.; six grandchildren, Megan, Lauren, and Keri Slyter, Danielle, Lea and Jeana Brewer; six nephews, nine nieces and a number of cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson, the Rev. J.B. Cargill and the Rev. Bill Adams. Claude M. Allen
World War II veteran

Claude Mills Allen, 78, husband of Emma Deane Osteen Allen of 817 Sardis Road, died Jan. 7, 2003, at 9:30 p.m. in the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Mr. Allen was born in Kannapolis, N.C. on July 6, 1924, a son of Pearl Mills Allen of Lexington and the late Rev. Claude Talmadge Allen.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Allen was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, Battles of Western Caroline Operations, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Gunto, and the liberation of the Philippines. He served aboard the USS Hopping, and commissioned the USS Crouter and the Petrof Bay. Mr. Allen was instrumental in forming the Southside Fire Department and formerly served as fire chief. He was retired from Freeman Gas of Spartanburg and Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Gil Moss of Laurens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Darwin and Janey Allen, Martin and Vickie Allen and Dean and Julie Allen all of Union; three grandchildren, Betsy Allen, Jennie Dean Allen and Chris Allen and his wife Mandy all of Union.

Mr. Allen was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Oliver Painter. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Donald Tillman, Rev. Angelina Price and Roger Bailey. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Bishop, Phillip Russell, Mike Lancaster, Kevin Smith, Phil Moore and Rusty Young. Members of the Southside Fire Dept. and all other Union County Firefighters are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Friday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8. The family is at the home, 817 Sardis Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Charles B. Bailey Jr.
World War II veteran

Charles B. Bailey Jr., 83, husband of Virginia Dupree Bailey of 211 Walker Heights, died Jan. 9, 2003, at 6:55 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mr. Bailey was born in Union on June 21, 1919, a son of the late Charles B. Bailey Sr. and Mattie Willard Bailey. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was a retired farmer.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby E. and Merrie Bailey of Union; and two brothers, Marion E. Bailey of Jonesville and Paul W. Bailey of Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Bailey was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia L. Bailey; a sister, Katherine Bailey; and a brother, Morris Bailey. Graveside services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Boyd Williams.

The family will receive friends at Sardis United Methodist Church immediately following the graveside services. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lillie Mae Bright
Retired owner of cab companies

Lillie Mae Hawkins Bright, 77, widow of Fred T. Bright Sr., of 203 Scott St., died Jan. 7, 2003, at 10:10 p.m. in Brookview Health Care in Gaffney after an extended illness. Mrs. Bright was born in Union on April 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Henry and Lizzie Enlow Hawkins. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church. Mrs. Bright was retired owner and operator of U-Need-A-Cab Company and Treadway Cab Company.

Surviving are three sons, Fred T. (Buddy) Bright Jr., John A. (Skeet) Bright and James O. (Jim) Bright all of Union; four sisters, Ada Royer and Barbara Robinson both of Chester, Grace Silvers and Carolyn Stegall both of Union; three brothers, Burley Hawkins and Henry Hawkins Jr. both of Union and Harold Hawkins of Spartanburg; three grandsons, Allan Bright, Colby Bright and Tristian Bright all of Union; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Bright of Union; and two step-grandchildren, Kalee Selim and Troy Prosser both of Union.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Crocker. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Nephews will be active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home of her son, Jim Bright, 103 Lowe Street, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harry H. Comer
World War II veteran

Harry Henton Comer, 84, husband of Laura Mae Eaves Comer, of 147 Mt. Tabor Church Road, died Jan. 8, 2003, at 5:12 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Comer was born in Union County on Jan. 5, 1919, a son of the late Claude and Nannie Gault Comer.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Comer was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Cone Mills Carlisle Plant and the Smyrna Plant of Sharon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Jennie C. and Tony Peay of Buffalo; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny K. and Julie Comer of Union; two sisters, Dorsey Farr and Mozelle McGrady both of Union; a brother, Rodney Comer of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Marty Reardon, Michelle Brock, Peggy Gault, Lori McCollum, Josh Comer and Amy Comer; and two great-grandchildren, Corey Brock and Paige Brock.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Comer, Donald Comer, Doug Guinn, Stan Eaves, Danny Lenard, Jimmy Comer and Joey Comer.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his son, Danny K. Comer, 135 Mt. Tabor Church Road. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 373 Wesley Chapel Road, Union The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Samantha F. Feaster
New York native

Samantha Francis Feaster, 33, wife of Ben Adams Feaster, of 108 Lybrand St., died Jan. 4, 2003. Mrs. Feaster was born in New York, N.Y. on July 10, 1968, a daughter of Louise Wilson of Union and Bennie Frank Wilson of New York, N.Y.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Michanne Monique Wilson of New Castle, Del.; and a brother, Mike Wilson of Union. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at The Greater Union Church by the Rev. J.D. Cody.

Burial will be in Mt. Rowell Baptist Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be tonight until 7 and Friday from 10 a.m. until noon. The family is at the home, 108 Lybrand Street, Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mittie R. Godfrey
Union County native

SPARTANBURG Mittie Ruth Eaves Godfrey, 94, of 13 County Road, Spartanburg, died Jan. 7, 2003. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Kate Gault Eaves and the wife of the late Fred B. Godfrey. She was retired from Spartan Undies and was a member of Powell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving include three sons, Bobby Godfrey of Inman, Jimmy Godfrey of Anderson and Billy Godfrey of the home; a sister, Mabel Owens of Spartanburg; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be tonight from 7 until 9 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Scruggs and the Rev. Fred Thompson. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Powell Presbyterian Church, 3 County Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. The family is at the home of a son, Bobby Godfrey, 240 Valley High Drive, Inman. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Virginia H. Brown
Retired textile worker

Virginia Howell Brown, 70, of 300 Hart St., Union, widow of James C. Brown, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at 1:50 a.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after an extended illness. Mrs. Brown was born in Union on June 15, 1933, a daughter of the late William Babe Howell and Emma Gregory Howell. She was a Baptist and was a retired textile employee.

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa B. Humphries of Union and Elaine B. Horne of the home; five sons and daughters-in-law, Clifford and Betty Brown, Dean and Linda Brown, Freddie Brown, Jerry and Sherry Brown and Billy and Becky Brown, all of Union; three sisters, Evelyn Knox, Myrtle Wilson and Willie Kirby, all of Union; two brothers, James Howell of Buffalo and William (Bill) Howell of Union; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brown was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Rosa Lee Morgan, Fannie Ruth West and Woodrow Howell. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 300 Hart St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Julius Hawkins
Newberry native

WHITMIRE Julius Sweetman Hawkins, 67, widower of Elosie K. Hawkins, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. He was born in Newberry County to the late John Hawkins Jr. and Lenora G. Chick.

Surviving are two sons, Tommy Hawkins of Elmont, N.Y., and Billy (Mary) Hawkins of Union; two stepsons, Charles Thomas and Bobby Thomas, both of Cleveland, Ohio; six sisters, Johnice Goode of Chester, Rosa Lee Cannon and Alberta Robinson, both of Union; Josephine Chick and Ethel Sims, both of Whitmire and Gloria D. Chick of Laurens; three brothers, James Chick of Union, Willie F. Cheeks and Edward Chick, both of Whitmire; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hunter Funeral Home Chapel. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Eddie Gist
Union native

Eddie Mae (Nollie) Gist, of 107-A Cogdill Plaza, widow of A.C. Gist, died Jan. 8, 2003 in Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Spartanburg. Mrs. Gist was born in York County, a daughter of the late Deacon James and Janie Foster Goode. She was a member of New Emmanuel Chapel Baptist Church and retired from Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Barbara Smith Goode of Union; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jean and Lynwood Wannamaker of Spartanburg; two sisters, Jennie Henderson of Union and Marie Goode Battle of New York; two brothers, Emzie Goode of Jonesville and Elzie Goode of Union; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer Wicker and Donna Goode of Union, Rose M. Goode of Virginia, Tracy Thomas of Gaffney, Eddie R., Randy and Ronnie Owens of Union, Jessica Brannon of Union, Veronica Brannon, Donavon, Jamie, Jessie Jr. and Christopher Brannon all of Jonesville; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gist was predeceased by a daughter, Doreatha Owens.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at New Emmanuel Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Fred K. Murray. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

The family will be at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elzie Goode, 225 Vaughn Road, Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
