Ruth Alvin died Oct. 20, 2010 at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.
Funeral service was held Oct. 25 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Denmark with the Rev. George Felder Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Jericho AME Church cemetery, Denmark. Lebby Funeral Home of Denmark was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Alvin was born Oct. 6, 1930 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Aiken and Jessie Milligan. She was married
to the late Jerry Alvin Jr. She was a member of Bethel AME Church. She was employed with the Blackville Hilda School system for 17 years as a bus driver and aide until she retired in 2005. She was predeceased by a son, Jerry Alvin.
Survivors include three sons, Arnold Alvin of Denmark, Jesse Alvin and John Alvin, both of Blackville; four daughters, Cherry Richardson and Sheallah Alvin, both of Blackville, Jaqueline Porter of Jacksonville, Fla. and Vertell Alvin-Moore of Jonesville; two half sisters, Christabel Billups of Brooklyn, N. Y. and Rose Lynch of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Bearnice Alvin and Beatrice Felder of Orangeburg; one uncle; a special cousin, James Riley of Charleston; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Lillie P. Breeland
Lillie P. Breeland, 87, of Ulmer, died Oct. 20, 2010 at her residence.
Funeral service was held Oct. 23 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Ulmer with the Rev. Henry Murdaugh officiating. Burial was in the Hoover cemetery. Heritage Funeral Home of Allendale was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Breeland was the daughter of the late Billy and Addie Hayes Patterson. She was married
to the late Herman Breeland Sr. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and the S. B.S. Society. She was predeceased by three sons, Herman Jr., Billy and Woodrow Breeland.
Survivors include eight children, Elizabeth Patterson, Verner (James) Gill and Daniel Breeland, all of Ulmer, Sarah (Freddie) Moore of Fairfax, Benjamin Breeland and Gloria (Willie) Carter, both of Allendale, Hermenia (George) Creech and Frank Kelly, both of Barnwell; two aunts; 38 grandchildren (three of whom were reared in the home, Monnie (Sabrina) Breeland and Herman (Jackie) Breeland, both of Allendale and Jonathan (Gloria) Lotts of Ulmer); six daughters-in-law; four sisters-in-law; 80 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
William Manley Carrigg
William Manley Carrigg, 66, of Florence, died Oct. 18, 2010 in a local healthcare facility after an illness.
Graveside service was held October 22, 2010 at Old Neck cemetery near Gresham. Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Carrigg was born in Bamberg County. He was the son of Nellie Ruth Wood Carrigg and the late William Wallace Carrigg. He retired from City of Marion where he worked as a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Jeanette Lowrimore Carrigg; one daughter, Cynthia Carrigg and her special friend Carroll Robinson of Florence; his mother; one brother, Ronnie Carrigg, and a special friend, Mike Hyman; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Frances Marian Morris Farr
Frances Marian Morris Farr, 78, of Allendale, died Oct. 20, 2010.
Graveside service was held Oct. 24 at Swallow Savannah cemetery with the Rev. E. Finley Limehouse officiating. Keith Smith Funeral Service of Allendale was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Farr was a native of Barnwell. She was the daughter of Roy and Bertie Hadwin Morris. She was the widow of Jonas Alfred Farr. She worked for Southern Bell as an operator for many years and retired from Queen Carpet. She was a Baptist. She was predeceased by one brother Jennings Morris.
Survivors include one son, Alfred Farr; two daughters, Jonie Farr and Kelly M. (Jim) Leppert; two brothers, Jack Morris and Jimmy (Ann) Morris; two sisters, Marjorie M. (Sam) Brown and Mell M. (Richard) Furman and five grandchildren.
Joseph L. ‘Jake' Blackmon Jr.
Joseph Lee (Jake) Blackmon, Jr., 78, of Windsor, died Oct. 19, 2010 at his residence.
Funeral services was held Oct. 23 at the First Baptist of Windsor with the Revs. Bobby Paschal and Jimmy Wingate officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery will full military honors accorded. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Blackmon was born in New Ellenton. He was the son of the late Joseph Lee Blackmon, Sr. and Lillie Grace Hankinson Blackmon Eubanks. He was a retired US Army Veteran having served during Desert Storm and retired from the SC Department of Highways and Public Transportation where he worked for 41 years in maintenance. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Windsor, the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and for more than 40 years he was a member of the Aiken Bowling League. . He was preceded in death by sister, Bobbie Jean Bodie and grandson, Mark Andrew Blackmon, Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Thelma Widener Blackmon; one daughter, Debbie (William) Maddox; two sons, Mike Blackmon and Mark Blackmon; one sister, Ethel Key; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and caregiver, Kathy Bivins.

Erma Nell Morris Johnson
Erma Nell Morris Johnson, 98, of Blackville, died on Friday, October 22, 2010.
Funeral service was held Oct. 24 at the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston with the Rev. Frederick Orr and Dr. Thomas Terry officiating. Burial was in the Blackville cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Olar. She was the daughter of the late Norman George Morris and Nellie Bly Cook Morris. She was married
to the late Grady Odessa Johnson. She was a member of the Blackville First Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunbeam teacher and was a member of the church choir. She operated a dairy and egg business many years ago and later worked as an insurance debitor. She and her husband operated several stores in Blackville over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Odessa Johnson; daughter, Anita Johnson Berry; brothers, Earl Morris and Norman George (Buster) Morris, Jr.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Kathy Berry (Rev. Frederick) Orr; one great-granddaughter, Kathryn Liana Orr; one grandson, William Grady Berry; one sister, Evelyn Morris Gray and several nieces and nephews. William George ‘Bill' Redwood
William George "Bill" Redwood, 77, of Williston, died Oct. 14, 2010.
Memorial service was held Oct. 16 at the Folk Funeral Home Chapel with Father Daniel Hank officiating. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Redwood was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of the late George and Mary Ann Fitzgerald Redwood. He was married
to the late Mollie Allen Redwood. He was a retired engineer having worked at SRS in Quality Control. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Holy Apostles, Barnwell and the Williston Lions Club.
Survivors include three sons, William M. (Pat) Redwood of Atlanta, Ga., Daniel J. (Mary) Redwood of De Ridder, La. and Andrew R. (Shellie) Redwood of North Augusta; a special friend, Kathryn Claytor Babb of Barnwell and four grandchildren.

Frances Chesser Harvey
Frances Chesser Harvey, died Oct. 13, 2010 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Funeral service was held Oct. 16 at Mercer Funeral Home in Denmark with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial was in the Starr cemetery near Olar. Mercer Funeral Home of Denmark was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Harvey was born June 29, 1943 in Hampton County. She was the daughter of the late George Irwin and Mary Crosby Chesser. She was predeceased by a son, Beryl G. Harvey and a daughter, Karen H. McLane.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Michael) Carson of Orangeburg and Pamela (Craig) Daniels of Beaufort, N. C.; two sons, Gerald (Angela) Harvey of Blackville and Michael (Susan) Harvey of Orangeburg; one brother, James "Buddy" Chesser of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kenneth Dean Brown
Kenneth Dean Brown, 68, of Bamberg, died Oct. 13, 2010.
Memorial service was held Oct. 17 at Springtown Baptist Church in Bamberg. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc of Orangeburg was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Brown was born Sept. 17, 1942 in Bamberg County. He was the son of the late Lewis Fonzie Brown Sr. and the late Gladys Dyches Brown. He served in the U. S. Army and was owner and operator of Brown's Used Cars until his retirement. He was predeceased by his brother, Lewis Fonzie Brown Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Gretchen Lott of Bamberg and Karman Brown of Fleetwood, N. Y. and their mother, Carrie Brown of Barnwell; special friends, Carlisle Brabham, Donnie Joyner, Larry Joyner, Hary Blume, Alva Leviner, Emily Gunnells, Stewart Craig and J. D. Drawdy; two grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Connie Nettles Dew, 78, of Barnwell, died Oct. 12, 2010.

Mrs. Dew was born March 25, 1932 in Aiea, Hawaii. She was the daughter of the late Maxima and Pascual Bailon. She was predeceased by her husbands, Joseph Nettles and Ishmael Dew; grandson, Jason Harvey and brother, Zoilio Bailon.
Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Kellett, Darlene (Tom) Orr and Virginia Nettles; two sons, Terry (Lynn) Nettles and Sanford (Beverly) Nettles; siblings, Victoria Batula of California, Julie Whisler of Missouri, Minky Burcham and Carmen Bennett of Arizona, Engracio Bailon, Primo Bailon, Pascual Bailon Jr., Tommy Bailon, Patrick Bailona nd Betty Berera, all of Hawaii; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
Frank ‘Buster' Bates
Frank "Buster" Bates, 84, of Barnwell, died Oct. 15, 2010 art his residence.
Funeral service was held Oct. 18 at Dyches Funeral Home Barnwell, with the Rev. Don Sanders officiating. Burial was in the Siloam United Methodist Church cemetery. Dyches Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Bates was born in Barnwell County. He was the son of the late Billy Owens and Virgie Roundtree Bates. He was married
to the late Marcel Williams Bates for 35 years. He was a SCPGA employee of the year in 1987. He was employed at Queen Gas Company for over 36 years. He was a member of the Siloam United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by sisters, Nell Priester and Dorothy Rast.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley B. (Gary) Cook of Barnwell and Peggy B. (Sandy) Sanders of Greenville, N. C.; special friend, Connie Maximiek; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Wilbur Williams Grooms
Wilbur Williams Grooms, 96, of Springfield, died Oct. 13, 2010 at his residence.
Graveside service was held Oct. 16 at the Williams Family cemetery in Springfield with the Rev. Henry Cooper and Dr. Stephen Gantt officiating. Dyches Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Grooms was born near Cross in Berkeley County. He was the son of the late Edwin D. and Ivah N. Williams. He was married
to the late Sophie Phillips Grooms. He was a Baptist, a Mason and a member of the American Legion. He enlisted in the Marines and trained at Parris Island. He served as a captain's or an admiral's orderly on the USS Antaries, the USS Utah and the USS Medusa. Discharged in 1936 in Brooklyn, N. Y., he worked for the White Tower System, Standard Oil Co. of N.Y. and Crusible Steel and Hyatt Bearing Division of General Motors. In 1945, he returned to Springfield and operated a general merchandise store and a small farm. He was named Civil Defense Director for Springfield in 1962 and served as Orangeburg County Civil Defense Director from 1971-1981. He retired as a commissioner with the Regional Housing Authority No. 3 in 1996.
Survivors include a nephew, Allen Phillips of Long Island, N. J. and 10 first cousins. Butler Stroman was a special assistant to Mr. Grooms for many years.

Claire Kitty Irene Biggers
Claire Kitty Irene Biggers, 80, of Barnwell, died Oct. 10, 2010.
A private grave-side service was held Oct. 12 at the Barnwell County Memory Gardens. Mole Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Biggers was born on Nov. 8, 1929 in Dartford, Kent, England and immigrated to Quebec, Canada with her parents in 1930. She was the daughter of the late Geoffrey W.F. and Irene Bedford Barwick of Surrey, England. She was a poet, author and artist of many mediums. She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas L. Biggers, Major USAF retired.
Survivors include her sister, Betty W.E. Barwick of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and two daughters, Melody A. Biggers and Amelia C. Biggers of Barnwell.
Wendall P. Gibson Sr.
Wendall P. Gibson Sr., 81, of Barnwell, died Oct. 15, 2010 at the University Medical Center in Augusta Ga.
Funeral Service was held Oct. 17 at the Hagood Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Catoe officiating. Burial was in the Barnwell County Memorial cemetery at the airport with Masonic Rites accorded. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Gibson was born Oct. 10, 1929 in Hampton County. He was the son of the late Manker H. and Vivian Freeman Gibson. He retired after 39 years as captain of the security department at the Savannah River Plant. He was a member of Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, Harmony Masonic Lodge #17, Omar Shrine Temple and El Bab Shrine Club and a Scottish Rite Mason. His lifelong interest in aviation led to the organization of the Barnwell Flying Club in 1955. He served many years as manager of Barnwell Regional Airport, was a charter member of the Barnwell County Airport Commission and soloed more that 400 student pilots. He was inducted into the SC Aviation Hall of Fame in 2007. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jesse Holbrook Gibson.
Survivors include his wife, Fredna Ulmer Gibson of Barnwell; one son, Wendall P. (Mary Beth) Gibson Jr. of Barnwell; two daughters, Gay (Maurice) Peace of Aiken and Suzanne (Leighton) Williams of Americus Ga.; one sister, Elise (Tom) Warren of Columbia; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
