Janice Keel Whitehead
Janice Keel Whitehead, 52, died July 8, 2010.
Funeral service was held July 11 at the Barnwell Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial was in the Barnwell County Memorial cemetery.
Mrs. Whitehead was born May 20, 1957 in Barnwell. She was the daughter of James Pickney Keel and the late Eleanor Still Keel. She was the wife of David Whitehead Jr. She was a member of the Barnwell Presbyterian Church and the Tuesday morning Bible study group. She was also the Barnwell Presbyterian Church liaison with Presbyterian community at Summerville. She was predeceased by a brother, James Keel.
Survivors include her husband, David Whitehead Jr. of Barnwell; one daughter, Caroline Megan Whitehead of Barnwell; two sisters, Alta (Reed) Swann and Becky (Steen) Pender of Barnwell; and two brothers, Richard (Michelle) Keel of Columbia and Joe D. (Sherry) Keel of Girard, Ga.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Ann Baxley Bazzle
Dorothy “Dot” Ann Baxley Bazzle, 76, died July 8, 2010.
Funeral service was held July 11 at the First Baptist Church of Williston with burial in the Williston cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Bazzle was born in Charleston. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Paul Baxley, Sr. and Fairy Belle Sullivan Baxley. She was married
to the late Coleman Bazzle and worked with her family at Baxley’s Tire and Wrecker Service for many years. For more than 41 years she was a newspaper carrier for The State newspaper and worked at the Kelly-Edwards Elementary School cafeteria. She was also a school bus driver for more than 21 years for the Williston school district and was a former member of the Williston Rescue Squad. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williston. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty June Baxley and a brother, Charlie Paul Baxley, Jr.
Survivors include one son, David P. (Jodi) Bazzle, Sr. of Williston and two grandchildren.

Lyle B. Tucker
Lyle B. Tucker, 56, of Olar, died July 3, 2010
Graveside service was held July 8 at Mizpah Methodist Church of Bamberg. Dyches Funeral Home of Blackville was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Tucker was originally from Brunswick, Ga. He had been living in the Raleigh area for the past nine years where he worked for the Rea Contracting asphalt paving company. He was well regarded within the asphalt industry where he was known for being an innovative and efficient worker.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; one son, Travis; one daughter-in-law, Cassie; four brothers, Lee, Sonny, Paul and Wayne; two sisters, Evelyn and Anita and many family members.
Melvin Jethro ‘Check’ Still
Melvin Jethro “Check” Still, 80, of Blackville, died July 6, 2010.
Funeral service was held July 8 at Ashleigh Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Still was born March 14, 1930 in Bamberg County. He was the son of the late Luther “Bub” Still and Elizabeth Hair Still. He was an employee of the S.C. Forestry Commission as well as Still and Williams Farm Supply. He was a deacon at Ashleigh Baptist Church. He was predeceased by brothers, Guy Still, Pollen Still, Luther F. Still and sisters Jackie S. Hightower and Sarah S. Boyd.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Paulette Odom Still; four sisters, Ola Mae Hutto and Harriett S. Collins of Hilda, Elloree S. Ussery of Barnwell and Rosa Lee Owens of Grovetown, Ga. and many nieces and nephews.

Everett Bernice Witt
Everett Bernice Witt, 88, of Barnwell, died July 6, 2010 at University Hospital in Augusta Ga.
Funeral service was held July 9 in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel with the burial following in the Barnwell County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Witt was born March 20, 1922 in Saluda. He was the son of the late John Martin Witt and Eula Cockrell Witt. He attended the First Assembly of God in Barnwell. He was a World War II veteran, having been stationed in England as a corporal with Army Air Corps military police. After the war, he was employed as an electrician at the Navy Yard in Charleston. In 1952 he moved his family to Barnwell to work at the Savannah River Plant until he retired in 1978. He was the owner and operator of Witt’s Small Engine Sales and Service for more than 20 years. He was predeceased by five brothers, Herbert Fletcher Witt, John Calvin Witt, William Lee Witt, Grady Lee Witt and Marion Witt, all of Saluda and two sisters, Emmie Sue Dodgen of Greenwood and Grace Ouzt of Saluda.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Frances Adams Witt of the home; one daughter, Marie (Jerry) Morris of Barnwell; one son, Raymond (Sandra) Witt of Seneca; five sisters, Ethel McDowell and Verdelia King of Saluda, Mae Huggins of Johnsonville, Reba (Ronnie) Wright of Belvedere and Rachel (Howard) Bentley of Trenton; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Mae Green
Dorothy Mae Green, 71, died July 4 at the Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg.
Funeral service was held July 9 at Capernaum Missionary Baptist Church, Denmark, with the Rev. Clary L. Green officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Lebby Funeral Home of Denmark was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Green was born Aug. 29, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Won Lee Chisolm and Mamie Washington Chisolm. She was a member of the Capernaum Baptist Church. She was predeceased by four siblings, Carrie Bell Blue, Ella Mae Chisolm, Harry Jean Chisolm and Johnny Lee Chisolm.
Survivors include her husband, Jeremiah Green Sr.; nine children, Jeremiah (Kay) Green Jr., Christian (JD) Auston, Carry Green, Dorothy (Elijah) Robinson, CasSaundra (Carl) Washington, Bobby Green, Gerald (Margaret) Green, Larry Green and Joyce (Anthony) Blocker; seven siblings, Mamie Lee Burks, Roger (Angie) Chisolm, Sara Odom, Bertel (Fred) Houston, Rosa Bell (James) Roseborough, Curtis (Eartha) Chisolm and George Edwards; 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Gladys Hayes Melton
Gladys Hayes Melton, 85, of Lenoir City, Tenn., died June 28, 2010 at the Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City.
Funeral service was held July 1 at Click Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jack Belcher and Tom Tapp officiating. Loudon Company Memorial Gardens was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Melton was born Dec. 21, 1924. She was the daughter of Charles and Alice Hayes. She was predeceased by sons, O. K. Melton Jr. “Sonny” and Billy Melton; a sister, Viola Hayes and brother, Bobby Hayes. She was a member of Oral Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, O. K. Melton Sr.; daughters, Alyce Rogers and Janet Powers of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Geneva (John) Still Jr. of Barnwell, Betty (Raymond) Rochat and Dixie Houck of Knoxville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews..
Roy Hamilton Rhinehart
Roy Hamilton Rhinehart, 75, of Blackville, died July 12, 2010 at home after battling cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., July 15, 2010 at Double Pond Baptist Church in Blackville with the burial following in the church cemetery. The Rev. Timothy Edmonds and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Terry will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., July 14 at Folk Funeral Home in Williston.
Mr. Rhinehart was formerly of Dry Prong, La. He graduated from Dry Prong High School and came to Blackville in 1952. He worked at Boylston Feed and Seed until employed by DuPont in 1955.
Mr. Rhinehart was a past president of the Blackville Jaycees and president of the Jefferson Davis Academy Booster Club in Blackville. Mr. Hamilton was a captain of the Blackville Rescue Squad and a volunteer firefighter. He was also a member of Double Pond Baptist Church.
Mr. Rhinehart was a Little League baseball coach and instrumental in the development and maintenance of the Jefferson Davis Academy football field.
After 40 years of devoted service to DuPont-Westinghouse, Mr. Rhinehart retired to garden, hunt and fish.
Mr. Rhinehart is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy; sons, Terry and Rodney (Kelli); brothers, Bob (Sharon) Rhinehart, Glynn (Lana) Rhinehart; Doug Rhinehart, sisters, Elaine (Everett) Sheldon, Margaret (Fred) Beach and Faye (Max) Williamson and four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Sabrina; his parents Authur and Ethel Rhinehart and his sister, Diane Landry.

Rose Lee McLeod Maslanko
Rose Lee McLeod Maslanko, 76, died June 19, 2010.
Funeral service will be held June 23, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetary.
Mrs. Maslanko was born in Sumter to the late John Davis "Bozie" Hudson and Susie Atkins Hudson Bochette. She was the former president of the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW Post 3034 and through her years with the VFW she assisted with many state and local activities. She was predeceased by three brothers, Nathan Hudson, Herbert W. Hudson, Sr. and Butch Bochette; and two sisters, Leatha Truett and Susan Robinson.
Suvivors include her husband, John Maslanko, six children, Liz Belsole (Randy Galloway) of Sumter, Otis "Buck" McLeod (Rhonda) of Blackville, Debra Nowakowski (Bob), Louise McCathern (Wesley), Dale Rygalski (Tom) of Sumter, and David Lackey of Michigan; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jessie Hudson (Vivian), John David Hudson, Jr. of Sumter, Tommy Hudson (Brenda), Mike Bochette (Sherrie) of Orangeburg, two sisters, Henrietta Smith and Catherine Kraft (Thomas) of Sumter and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Doby Dunbar
Mary Doby Dunbar, 77, died June 9, 2010 at her residence.
Funeral service was held June 16 at Fair Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. John Robinson and Ted Bellinger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Dunbar was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Williston. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Lily Mae Jones Doby. She worked various jobs to support her family. Her last known occupation was at the Barnwell High School District No. 45. She was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Gean Dunbar. She joined the Cannan Fair CME Church in Williston.
Survivors include one son, Dennis Dunbar of the home and Jonas Dunbar of Florida; one daughter, Mildred (Andy) Brown of Barnwell; one brother, Lang Jones Jr.; 11 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Lloyd A. Ayer
Lloyd A. Ayer, 68, died June 15 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
A memorial service was held June 19. The Rev. Clark McCrary officiated. Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Ayer was born July 14, 1941. He was the son of the late Myles Ayer and the late Maude Esther Copeland Ayer. He was a retired South Carolina Highway Patrolman and also worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles. He was predeceased by his wife the late Miriam Baxley Ayer.
Survivors include two sons, Lee (Tracey Lloyd) Ayer of Surrey, England and Timothy Lee (Amy) Ayer of Orangeburg; three sisters, Lena Ayer Kittrell of the Canaan Community, Blanche Crider of Williston and Edna Weeks of Denmark and three grandchildren.

Floria Dell Staley-Bracey
Floria Dell Staley-Bracey, 98, died June 4, 2010.
Funeral service was held June 11, 2010 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lees. Lebby Funeral Home of Denmark was in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Bracey was born Dec. 30, 1911 in Bamberg. She was the daughter of the late Deacon Jesse and Mamie Walker-Staley. She traveled with her military husband all over the world for more than 20 years before retiring and returning to Denmark. She faithfully served in many auxiliaries at Mount Zion Baptist Church and also cared for her elderly father until his death.
Survivors include her children, Mary A. Miles and Willie C. Bracey of Denmark, two daughters-in-law; Carolyn Bracey of Denmark and Irene Bracey of Brooklyn, N.Y. A son-in-law, Jesse Bellamy of Phila. Pa., two brothers Kinzy Staley of Cope, and Alexander Staley of Phila., Pa. Two sisters-in-law, Lougina Staley of Brooklyn, NY. And Zilerine Moore of Columbia. 14 grandchildren, three of whom were caregivers, Margaret (George) Lewis, Lance Bracey and Irene Robinson, 38 great grandchildren, 22 great, great grandchildren and 2 great, great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Lois Renew Carson
Lois Renew Carson, 87, died June 19, 2010 at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral service was held June 22 in the Mole Funeral Home chapel with burial in the Barnwell County Memorial cemetery.
Mrs. Carson was born on March 23, 1923 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Dave and Carrie Beasley Renew. She was the widow of E.J. Carson II. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and a retired employee of Shuron Inc. She was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Carson Carroll and brothers, Wallace, Willie, Bobby, Ernest David (Tooney) and William (Bubba) Renew.
Survivors include one son, E.J. Carson III of Barnwell; one son-in-law, Henry Carroll of Barnwell; one sister, Marlene (Carlisle) Holden of Barnwell; two brothers, Shellie Renew and Odell (Betty) Renew of Barnwell; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
