DRAYTON Jerry Wayne Harris Sr., 48, of 35 Carney St., Drayton, widower of Susan Braxton Harris, died Jan. 11, 2003, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of Lucille Queen Chavis of the home and the late Paul Richard Harris. He attended Bethesda Baptist Church. Mr. Harris was formerly employed for a number of years with Burnsed Monument Company of Union.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons, Jerry Wayne Harris Jr. of Lexington and Paul Wayne Harris of Union; a stepson, Mitchell Lovern of Union; three sisters, Chris Harris of Pauline, Billy Harris and Bobby Harris both of Drayton and Ricky Harris of Chesnee. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-2:45 p.m. at Drayton Baptist Church.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at Drayton Baptist Church by the Rev. Randall Blackman. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the home of his sister, Teresa Bryant, 210 Mullins St., Spartanburg. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. Dorothy Scott Jolly
Dorothy Scott Jolly, 89, of 115 Brown St., widow of Miles S. Jolly, died Jan. 12, 2003 at 7:40 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Jolly was born in Union on Jan. 1, 1914, a daughter of the late Morris M. and Bessie Harris Scott. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Jolly was retired from Wilburn's on Main.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Brenda Meador Jolly of Union; three grandchildren, Amanda J. Kingsmore and her husband John Kingsmore, Brad Jolly and his wife Casie S. Jolly, all of Union and Audra Jolly of Charlotte, N.C.; two great-granddaughters, Abby Kingsmore of Union and Alli Jolly of Charlotte, N.C.
Mrs. Jolly was predeceased by a son, Samuel Scott Jolly; three sisters and two brothers, Gladys Scott, Ophelia Lamb, Mildred Malone, Wilson Scott and Charles Scott. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Alexander. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Scott Malone, Chuck Malone, James Robert Gaden, Jimmy Jolly, Larry Moore, Bruce Blackwell and David Turner Sr. Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home of her daughter-in-law, Brenda M. Jolly, 304 Wilson St. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 1705 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 293769. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Bobby McGowan
James Bobby McGowan, 71, husband of Annie Mae Vaughan McGowan, of 242 Velda Drive, died at his home Saturday morning, Jan. 11, 2003, after a sudden illness. Mr. McGowan was born in Union on July 23, 1931, a son of the late James Wallace (Brown) McGowan and Nellie Eunice Vaughan Callahan. He was a Baptist. Mr. McGowan was a former member of the S.C. National Guards Union Plant and was retired from the Union County School System.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Linda Rebecca (Becky) Garner of Lockhart; three sons, James Lee McGowan of Spartanburg, Tommy Wayne McGowan and James Michael McGowan Sr. both of Union; a stepson, Roy Youngblood of Union; three sisters, Sadie Sumner of Buffalo, Lucy Puckett and Peggy Garner both of Union; four brothers, Jack McGowan of Anaheim, Calif.; J.W. McGowan of Union, Roy Frost of Buffalo and Arthur Frost of Columbus, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. McGowan was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Shirley Helton and Ted McGowan. Graveside services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. Brad Goodale. The body is at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 242 Velda Drive, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Flora G. Nelson
JONESVILLE Flora Garner Nelson, 84, formerly of Jonesville, widow of Herbert Hames Nelson Sr., died Jan. 11, 2003, in Eustis, Florida. Mrs. Nelson was born in Union County on Jan. 3, 1919, a daughter of the late Banks W. and Lillie Mae Foster Garner. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and was retired from J.P. Stevens Co., Jonesville Plant.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert Hames Nelson Jr. and Rosemarie H. Nelson of Howey-In The Hills, Florida; a brother, Angus W. Garner of Jonesville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ralph Brown. The family will receive friends at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mack Cloe Parker
JOHNSONVILLE Mack Cloe Parker, 82, died Jan. 10, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Mr. Parker was born in Cades, a son of the late Willie MacDove and Culia Mims Parker. He was retired from the Maintanence Dept. of Wellman Industries and was of the Holiness Faith. Mr. Parker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attended Johnsonville Schools.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Belle Langley Parker of the home; children, Mavis (Bill) Riley of Newberry, Judy Hodge of Sumter, Shirley (Ronnie) Baxley and Tracy (Chris) Parker of John-sonville, Bruce (Linda) Parker of Union, Johnny (Mable) Parker of Franklin, Va.; Danny (Ramona) Parker of Hemingway and Andy (Vernessa) Parker of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; a sister, Lela Parrot of Lake City; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2-3:30 p.m. Morris Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Larry Spencer
Larry Spencer, 47, of 202 Ravenscroft St., died Jan. 10, 2003. Mr. Spencer was born in Union on April 27, 1955, a son of Pernelle Spencer of Union and the late Abraham Sims. He was retired from textiles.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Michael Spencer, Timothy Jeter and Patrick Moore; and four sisters, Patricia Jeter, Shirley Talley, Rebecca Whitner, and Joella Spencer. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. the Union Community Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Ponder.
Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Public viewing will be today until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The family is at the home, 202 Ravenscroft St., Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James Knox Jr.
James Knox Jr., 82, husband of Callie Morris Knox of 12 Webber St., Jonesville, died Monday morning, Jan. 12, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Knox was born in Union County on Oct. 20, 1921, a son of the late James Knox Sr. and Bessie Hodge Knox. He was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church, Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge, Hajaz Shrine Temple and a member of States Rights Gist Camp #1451. Mr. Knox was a retired mechanic.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Myra Knox Wood of Greer; two grandsons, Todd Steven Wood of Florida and Terry James Wood of Greer; two great-grandchildren, Dillon Todd Wood and Tucker James Wood; three sisters, Betty Lawson and Edna Burgess, both of Spartanburg and Shirley White of Union; two brothers, Robert Knox of Jonesville and Fred Knox of High Point, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Woods Memorial Park in Greer. Active pallbearers will be Todd, Terry and Steve Wood and Keith Metz.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 12:30 until 2 prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Jonesville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 787, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bessie J. Stewart
Bessie Johnson Stewart, 95, widow of Walker Poole Stewart, of 1574 Old Buncombe Road, died Jan. 13, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital at 9:15 p.m. Mrs. Stewart was born in Woodruff on July 7, 1907, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Ellen Chumley Johnson. She was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille S. and J. Edward Craig of Union and Bessie S. and William O. Malpass of Charleston; two sisters, Nancy J. Lamb of Cross Anchor and Carrie J. Kingsmore of Baltimore, Md.; two granddaughters, Melissa Faye Schoeffel and Teresa M. Hoffbert both of Charleston; and a great-granddaughter, Katie Stewart Schoeffel of Charleston.
Mrs. Stewart was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Electa J. Burnett, Maude J. Bishop and Sam Johnson. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Andrews and Rev. Melvin Hudson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. Fred A. Alexander
Fred Albert Alexander, 82, of 205 Whitlock Lake Road, and formerly of Spartanburg, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at his home. Born July 1, 1921, in Greenville County, he was the son of the late James Broadus and Maggie Pearl Norris Alexander and was the husband of Helen Ward Alexander of the home.
He was retired from Clement Lumber Co., was the owner of The Country Outlet in Jonesville and was a member of Skylyn United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served under the command of Gen. George Patton with the 95th Division, 378th Regiment, Company G. and was the recipient of the Purple Heart in 1944.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Dora Alexander Brown of Waynesville, N.C., and Rachel Alexander Teague of Jonesville; three grandsons, Sidney Brown of Newman, Ga., Patrick Brown of Columbia and Bryan Teague of Spartanburg; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth T. Morgan of Jonesville.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Troy Alexander, Leonard Alexander and Roy Alexander, and by two sisters, Lillian Elgin and Clovie Dial. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. James B. Carter and the Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skylyn United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1415 Skylyn Drive, Spartanburg, S.C. 29307; or to Oakbrook Community Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 538, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the home. Floyd's Grenlawn Chapel.
Kennis M. Young
Kennis Marion Young, 42, of 726 Rice Ave., Apt. 5-B, Union, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 in the Atlanta Medical Center. Mr. Young was born in Union on July 20, 1961, a son of Millie Stevens Young of Union and the late Marion D. Young Sr. He was a member of New Chapel AME Church. He was employed as a sales associate with Voicestream Wireless in Atlanta, Ga. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1979, and a graduate of Columbia Junior College.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Yashiekia Foster of Columbia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kimberly and Jeffrey Little of Okinawa, Japan, and Carla and Anthony Worthy of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Marion D. Young Jr. and Shirley of Union; two God sisters, Latesha Young of Rock Hill and Freda Epps of Union; a God brother, Alvin Epps of Union; his maternal-grandmother, Mable Stevens of Union; his paternal grandmother, Queen Young of Union; his maternal great-grandmother Sillar Pendergrass of Union; two grandchildren, Mahaganee Foster and Chandler Foster, both of Columbia and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Chapel AME Church conducted by the Rev. Adrian Kollock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family is at the home of his mother, Millie S. Young, 201 N. Evans St., Union. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Ruby L. Youngblood
Ruby Lawson Youngblood, 88, of 3387 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, widow of Theodore T.D. Youngblood, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at 10:17 a.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Mrs. Youngblood was born in Buffalo on July 10, 1915, a daughter of the late John and Bertha Fincher Lawson. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church and the Guiding Light Sunday School Class. Mrs. Youngblood was retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and from Buffalo Fish Camp. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Eleanor Youngblood of Buffalo; two grandchildren, Terry Youngblood and his wife, Diane of Jonesville, Deanna Y. Arnold and husband Dan of Santuc; three great-grandchildren, Kevin Youngblood, Ashley Youngblood, both of Jonesville and Justin Arnold of Santuc; step-grandchildren, Ricky and Glynette Scott, Sammy and Deborah Scott, all of Buffalo and Pamela Gilliam of Spartanburg; two step-great-grandchildren, Heather and Scott McCaskill of Irmo and Derek Scott of Clemson; two step great-great-grandchildren, Lauren McCaskill of Irmo and Stacy Scott of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Ray Harold Belue. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Johnny Ray Youngblood, Lee Wayne Youngblood, Kevin Youngblood, Marshall O'Shields, Ralph Childers, Steve Youngblood and Ricky Scott.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: members of the Guiding Light Sunday School Class and Jim Barrett, Dennis Sherbert, Tim Sizemore, Gerald Graham, Glenn Sherbert, Dr. Ronald H. Littlefield, Bruce and Linda Betenbaugh, Bill Kelly, Glenn Caldwell, Everette Smith, Jerry Lawson, Billy Gossett, Ronnie Gossett and Lawrence Burgess.
