Desca Deborah DuBois
Desca Deborah DuBois, 55, of Lake Park, Fla., died April 30, 2011 in Barnwell.
Memorial service will be held May 6 at Mole Funeral Home Chapel, Barnwell. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. DuBois was born in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Dora and Claude J. Duncan. She grew up in Barnwell. She was a professor at the American of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She was an accomplished artist and presented a dozen solo art exhibits and participated in 34 group art shows. She also worked with the Educational TV Network in South Carolina and appeared on CBS Network Morning News. She was serving her second three-year term as Mayor of the Town of Lake Park, Fla. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Duise and Dora Creech and Robert A. and Lettie Duncan.
Survivors include her husband, James DuBois of Lake Park, Fla.; one sister, Claudette D. Towne of Barnwell; niece, nephew, grand niece, grand nephew and special friend, Chloe Towne of Barnwell.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to The Town of Lake Park Public Library, 535 Park Avenue, Lake Park, Fla. 33403 or The Association for Retarded Citizens of Palm Beach County (ARC), 1201 Australian Avenue, West Palm Beach, Fla. 33404-6635.

May Brinkley Jones
May Brinkley Jones, 87, of Barnwell, died April 25, 2011 surrounded by her husband and four daughters at White Oak Manor, Charleston.
Funeral service was held April 30 in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Orr officiating. Burial was private. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Jones was born June 14, 1923 in Ellenton. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Fred and Lille Brinkley. She taught in the Barnwell County School System for 30 years and was adored by her students and colleagues. She played basketball in high school and college and was known for playing baseball with her students at recess. She lived in Barnwell after her marriage and also with her daughters in Connecticut and South Carolina until she moved to a retirement home in Charleston. She was a prize-winning Jitterbug dancer and loved practical jokes, entertaining all ages. She was a member of the Barnwell First Baptist Church. She was predeceased by two sisters Alstyne Brinkley Boulware Still and Jean Brinkley Orr.
Survivors include her husband, Edward (Ned) Jones; four daughters, Linda Jones and Jenifer Jones Stone of Summerville, Libby Jones Orvedal and Jane Jones Pages of Charleston; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Jonathan Malcolm Myers
Jonathan Myers, 20, of Barnwell, died April 27, 2011.
Funeral service was held April 30 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston with burial in the Williston cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Myers was born in West Columbia. He was the son of Eddie Myers and Cala Harter Myers. He was a 2009 graduate of Barnwell High School, a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and attended Williston First Baptist Church. He was formerly employed with Newman Industries and was a member of Elko and Long Branch Fire Departments. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Anthony Lewallen and his paternal grandfather, James Rourke.
Survivors include his parents, Eddie and Cala Myers; one sister, Rebecca Myers; one brother, Eddie Myers Jr.; paternal grandmother, Betty Rourke; maternal grandparents, Mack and Carolyn Harter; niece; nephew and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carl ‘Shamrock’ Cave Jr.
Carl “Shamrock” Cave Jr., 61, of Barnwell, died April 24, 2011 at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Ga.
Funeral service was held April 28 at Rosemary Baptist Church, Barnwell, with the Rev. Sarah C. Perkins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Cave was born June 3, 1949. He was the son of Bernetha W. Cave-Calhoun and the late Carl Cave Sr. He was a member of Barnwell Lodge No. 180. He was employed with Shuron Plant in Barnwell for a number of years and Builders Transport Trucking Company until retirement. He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church, Barnwell. All the children of the Red Oak Community knew him as Uncle June.
Survivors include one daughter, Carla (Carlos) Wilson; his mother of Barnwell; two sisters, Emma Peeples of Barnwell and the Rev. Sarah C. (Minister Jimmy) Perkins of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Deacon Donald (Mary) Cave and Gregory (Brenda) Cave, both of Barnwell; one step brother, Walter Calhoun of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three step sisters, Mary Sawyer of Blackville, Ethel Hutto and Dorothy Walter of Riviera Beach, Fla.; one step sister-in-law, Emily Calhoun of Blackville; a devoted friend, Annette Frederick; five god-daughters, Cheryl, Laurine, Tariema, Tiffany Frederick and Gloria (Lannie) Odom; one god son, James Smith; one uncle; one grand aunt; eight grand god children, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Louise Boland Ross
Louise Boland Ross, 58, of Springfield, died April 24, 2011.
Graveside funeral service was held today, April 27 at the Springfield cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Ross was born in Columbia. She was the daughter of the late Augustus Massebeau Boland, Sr. and Lillian Boatwright Boland. She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Augustus M. Boland, Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. John R. Ross Sr.; one daughter, Anne (John) Rosen of Charleston; one son, John Richard (Andreen Galloway) Ross Jr. of Greer; one brother, Bobby Boland of Camden; two grandchildren; a dear friend, Irma (Trudy) Grimes of Bamberg; and several nieces and nephews.

James Lloyd ‘Jimmy’ Peeples Jr.
James Lloyd “Jimmy” Peeples Jr., 72, of Barnwell, died April 23, 2011 at the Barnwell County Hospital.
Funeral service will be held at 3 pm Thursday, April 28 in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel with military honors. Visitation will be on Thursday from 1-3 p.m. Mole Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Peeples was born Dec. 5, 1938 in Allendale County. He was the son of the late James L. Peeples Sr. and Eda Faust Peeples. He was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He was an employee of Advance Auto in Barnwell where he worked in the commercial delivery department.
Survivors include his wife, Arline Warren Peeples of Barnwell; son, James O. (Elizabeth) Peeples of Pelion; sister, JoAnne (George) Laurey of Barnwell; granddaughter, Sierra Jade Peeples of Pelion. He was predeceased by a brother, Faust Peeples.

Mary Lou Bell Watkins Whittle
Mary Lou Bell Watkins Whittle, 77, of Branchville, died Nov. 27, 2010 at the Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.
Graveside service was held Nov. 30 at Hunters Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, Bamberg with the Revs. Billy Mew and Donnie Delk officiating. Cooner Funeral Home of Bamberg was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Whittle was born Oct. 28, 1933 in Graceville, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Wilburn D. and Louise Peacock Bell. She retired from Bamberg Piggly Wiggly.
Survivors include her husband, Paul K. Whittle of the home; one daughter, Nancy W. (Butch) Busbee of Gaston; three sons, Aris A. Watkins of West Columbia, Michael A. (Zeomara) Watkins of Raeford, N. C. and Christopher M. (Carolyn) Watkins of Barnwell; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hunters Chapel Baptist Church, 9375 Hunters Chapel Road, Bamberg, SC 29003.

Joseph Carl Gilchrist
Joseph Carl Gilchrist, 72, of Blackville, died Nov. 9, 2010 at the Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg.
Funeral service was held Nov. 13 at Rome Baptist Church, Denmark with the Rev. Sanka Davis Sr. and Bishop James Eaddy officiating. Burial was in the Hope Memorial Park cemetery. Dash’s Funeral Home of Blackville was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Gilchrist was born July 2, 1938 in Mullins. He was the son of the late Rex and Novella Gilchrist. He spent four years in the Navy and moved to Queens, N. Y. He was employed with the Queens General Hospital as an X-Ray technician and retired from that position in 1976. Upon retiring he moved to Blackville. While residing in South Carolina, he was employed with Voorhees College as a security guard and he worked at the Savannah River Site as a construction worker.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Gilchrist; two daughters, Cathy Nance of Queens, N. Y. and Tiffany Gilchrist-Jackson of Denmark; one son, Terrance Nance of Queens, N. Y.; two sisters, Dianne (James) Brooks of Detroit and Alice (John) Hickman of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Luzell (Emma) Coleman of Jamica, N. Y. and the Rev. Milford (Benita) Coleman of Chicago and six grandchildren.

Marvin Nicholas Jarrell
Marvin Nicholas Jarrell, 70, of Bamberg, died Nov. 20, 2010 at Providence Hospital, Columbia.
Funeral service was held Nov. 23 at Cooner Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dan Boineau and Pastors, Robert Templeton and Bert Petty officiating. Burial was in the Bamberg County Memory Gardens. Cooner Funeral Home of Bamberg was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Jarrell was born Dec. 22, 1939 in Baxley, Ga. He was the son of the late Henry R. and Eva Mathis Jarrell. He was married to the late Margaret Louise Davis Jarrell. He was a member of Springtown Baptist Church in Bamberg where he served as a deacon. He was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra J. (Ronald) Dutcher of Bamberg, Glenda J. (Jimmy) Hartzog of Denmark and Linda J. (Robert) Templeton of Neeses; one son, Marvin “Nicky” (Annetta) Jarrell Jr. of Lexington, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

William Love ‘Bill’ Faircloth Jr.
William Love “Bill” Faircloth Jr., 73, of Swansea, died Nov. 16, 2010.
Funeral service was held Nov. 23 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lexington. Burial was in the Montmorenci Baptist Church cemetery. Folk Funeral Home of Williston was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Faircloth was born in New Jersey. He was the son of William Love Faircloth Sr. and the late Melissa J. McKeown Faircloth. He formerly worked for SCDOT and was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Radio Club. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Lynell Ingram and a brother, Thomas A. Faircloth.
Survivors include his wife, Lynette “Lynn” Bodie Faircloth of the home; three daughters, Judy Lynn (Rodney) McClure of Leesville, Melissa Ann (Greg) Stark of Elgin and Oletia Cathleen Faircloth of Columbia; one sister, Mary (Robert) Scheuttler; one brother, Eddie Faircloth; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Harry Thomas
Harry Thomas, 62, of Fairfax, died Nov. 22, 2010.
Graveside service was held Nov. 26 at Fairfax cemetery with the Revs. Jule Young and Fred Orr officiating. Keith Smith Funeral Service of Allendale was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Thomas was the son of the late Harry Manning and Eddie Mae Sligh Thomas. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Fluor Daniel Construction Company and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was predeceased by one brother, Wade O’Neal Thomas.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Smith; two daughters, Lydia Lindler and Cynthia Murray; two sisters, Thelma T. (Paul) Brant and Margie Marie Thomas; special friends, Steven M. Russell, Megan Russell and Michael Sease.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 6486 Confederate Hwy. Fairfax, SC 29827.

Nina Mae Sanders Ray
Nina Mae Sanders Ray, 89, of Barnwell, died Nov. 18, 2010 at the Barnwell County Hospital.
Funeral service was held Nov. 21 at 3:00PM at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Nixon, Wayne Lovett and Rev. Marshall Still, and Jeffery Ray officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Ray was born April 3, 1921 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Milledge and Mary Still Sanders. She was the widow of Jeff Ray. She was a retired production worker with National Fasteners and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was predeceased by brothers T.J., Roy, Doris, and Broadus Sanders, sister Lottie Hair, son Franklin Ray, and grandson Dale Ray.
Survivors include one son, Tommy (Jean) Ray of Barnwell; two daughters, Mary Ann (George) Still of Barnwell and Betty Jean (Jackie) Baxley of Barnwell; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Denise Michelle Hicks Johnican
Denise Michelle Hicks Johnican, 37, of Barnwell, died Dec. 8, 2009.
Funeral service was held Dec. 12 at Brown Chapel Baptist Church, Barnwell with the Rev. Eugene Keitt Jr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Lebby Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Johnican was born Aug. 31, 1972 in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Hicks Sr. She was a member of Brown Chapel Baptist Church. She was predeceased by a sister, Delores Jones.

Rosa Lee Grant
Rosa Lee Grant, 78, formerly of Coosaw Island, mother of Annie Lee Grant Gadsden, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in a New Jersey nursing home.
Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals is in charge.
