ABBEVILLE — Alexander Laster, 47, of 380 Hodges Road died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a retired textile employee, a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Sons of Aide.
Surviving are daughter, Faith Williams of Greenville; mother, Lue Gene Laster of the home; brothers, John A. Laster Jr. of Abbeville and Robert Allen Laster of New Jersey; sister, Elizabeth Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
He was the son of the late John Allen Laster.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Hutchins, Jack
PELZER — Jack L. Hutchins, 66, of 135 Cooley Bridge Road died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Belton, he was a retired Senior Master Sgt. for the U.S. Air Force and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are widow, Kathleen Adams Hutchins of Pelzer; sons, Carl Lewis Hutchings of Charlotte, N.C. and Ralph Lewis Hutchins of Pelzer; brothers, Larry Hutchins of Piedmont and Ralph E. Hutchins of Estepo, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was the son of the late James Lewis and Annie Mae Bannister Hutchins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Francis Hayes.
Services are at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Belton, by the Rev. Eddie Cox. The body will be open for viewing from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with the family to receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will be at the home of his brother, Larry Hutchins, 142 Bentwood Drive in Piedmont.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1986, Simpsonville, S.C. 29631.
Hembree, Sallie
June 20, 1922 — Sept. 30, 2002
SENECA — Sallie Hembree, 80, of Seneca died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
Born in Salem, she was retired from J.P. Stevens, Utica Plant with 25 years of service, and a member of Bethany Church of God in Pickens.
Surviving are daughters, Nancy Hemberee Porter of Seneca and Fern Hembree Jennings of West Union; son, Charles Hembree of Pickens; sister, Lola Medlin of Central; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was the widow of Edwin "Ed" Charles Hembree and the daughter of the late Gus and Arrie Barnum Hawkins. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jason and Alan Jennings.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home by the Revs. Roger Stephens and Doug Saylors; burial will follow in the Corinth Baptist Church cemetery in Seneca. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will be at the home of Nancy Porter, 830 Hembree Pt. Road, Seneca at other times.
Handley, Sudie
AUSTELL, Ga. — Sudie M. Handley, 82, of Austell died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002.
She was born in Oconee County.
Surviving are daughter, Carol Reeves; brothers, Johnny B. Chasteen and Charlie Chasteen; sister, Annie Bee Crawford; one grandson; five step-grandchildren; and five great-step-grandchildren.
She was the widow of Lt. Col. Walter C. Handley and the daughter of the late Col. William Chasteen and Martha Lee Kinsey Chasteen. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vaskell and Leroy Chasteen; and four sisters, Rose Buckwalter, Swanie Miller, Maybell Russell, and Elizabeth Gilbert.
Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roy Davis Funeral Home, Austell, by the Rev. Jackie Sanders; burial will be at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Glenn, Ruby
Oct. 5, 1941 — Sept. 29, 2002
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Ruby Lillian Huckaby Glenn, 60, of Lawrenceville died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Born in Clinton, Tenn., she was a retired production specialist, Level 2 with Lucent Technologies and was a member of North Clinton Baptist Church in Clinton.
Surviving are widower, Ray Glenn of Lawrenceville; son, Greg Huckaby of Winder; stepsons, Tim Glenn of Colorado, Steve Glenn of Montana and Ken Glenn of Auburn; brother, Leroy Huckaby Jr. of Clinton; sisters, Chestine Wilson, Maxine Wilson, Josephine Martin and Imogene Henderson, all of Clinton; and seven grandchildren.
She was the daughter of the late Leroy Sr. and Elsie Mae Phillips Huckaby.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin-Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, by the Revs. Ralph O. Smith and Ray Gentry; burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Gaines, Gilbert
CONYERS, Ga. — Gilbert Gaines, 61, of 1504 Sugar Plum Place died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Portsbridge Hospice Center in Conyers.
A native of Hart County, he was a member of the Ruckers Grove Baptist Church in Hartwell. He was a Mason and retired lieutenant of the Rockdale Sheriff Department.
Surviving are sons, Tony and Kevin Gaines, both of Decatur and Michael Brown of Conyers; daughter, Stacy Gaines of Decatur; brother, Willie Wade Gaines of Wilmington, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Costell and Jean Brown Gaines.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ruckers Grove Baptist Church, Hartwell, by the Rev. George Tate; burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday until hour of service.
Memorial services are at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2621 S.C. 20 SE in Conyers.
The family will be at the home of Thomas and Idell Morrison, 179 Friendship Road, Hartwell, Ga. 30643.
Mack's Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of arrangements.
Dawson, Ethel
PHILADELPHIA — Ethel Dawson of Philadelphia died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in Philadelphia.
She was born in Anderson.
Surviving is sister, Helen Arnold formerly of Anderson, and many other relatives.
She was the daughter of the late Mattie Stowers.
Services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in Philadelphia.

Couture, Jeanne

TOCCOA, Ga. — Jeanne Clermont Couture, 93, of Wilkinson Drive died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Stephens County Hospital.
Born in Lowell, Mass., where she lived most of her life and the last 20 years in Toccoa. She was retired from RCA, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Toccoa Senior Citizens and the AARP.
Surviving are sons, Paul Couture of Toccoa and Roger Couture of Hartsdale, N.Y.; brother, Gerard Clermont of Lowell; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was the widow of Alexis Couture and the daughter of the late Noe and Marie Forget Clermont.
Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at St. Jeanne D'Arc Catholic Church in Lowell; burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lowell.
