Beverly Croteau Carey
Beverly Croteau Carey, 71, of Beaufort, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at her residence.
Services will be at a time to be announced in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Carey was born September 13, 1930, in Salem, Mass., a daughter of Lawrence W. Croteau and Natalie Cook Croteau. She was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church, a charter member of the Royal Pines Garden Club and past treasurer of the Massachusetts Federation of Gardens Clubs. She was formerly on the Altar Guild of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Marblehead.
Survivors include her husband, Bradlee T. Carey of Beaufort; a daughter, Candice Peabody of Norwalk, Conn.; a son, David Knight of Danvers, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC, 29935.

Robert David Carter
COLUMBIA -- Robert David Carter, 79, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Carter was born in Dillon, a son of Walter Carter and Helen Gaddy Carter.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Florine Youngblood Carter; two daughters, Janis Carter Patterson, and Lynn Carter Gibson of Columbia; a sister, Polly McCormick Barfield of Columbia; two brothers, the Rev. Lewis McCormick of Mullins and Charlie McCormick of Blackville; grandchildren Christopher and Wendy Gibson of Beaufort, Shera Gibson of Alpharetta, Ga. and Emilie and Annette Patterson of Columbia; a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Adrian Carter and Howell McCormick.

Robert Goodman Lake
Robert Goodman Lake, 79, of Beaufort, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial with military honors will be in the Beaufort National cemetery.
Mr. Lake was born September 15, 1922, in Adrian, Mich., a son of Eugene Patterson Lake and Helen Keeler Lake. He attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1945 from West Point Military Academy. He received an MBA in 1950 from the University of Chicago and received at LL.B. degree from the George Washington University in 1964.
He was a member of Delta Upsilon, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Delta Phi fraternities.
Mr. Lake was a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement he was employed by Avco Corp (Textron) and Abt Associates Inc., Cambridge, Mass.
Surviving is his wife, Barbara Benner Lake of Beaufort.

David L. Quinby, 71, husband of Juliann M. Quinby, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Donald L. Jeter
Donald L. Jeter, 52, of Beaufort, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Naval Hospital Beaufort.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Allen Funeral Home, Lobeco.
Services will be at noon Thursday at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Chapel with burial in Beaufort National cemetery.
Mr. Jeter was born May 13, 1949, in Camden, N.J., a son of Mary Jeter and Robert Jeter Sr. He was affectionately known as "Sarge." He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age when he joined Second Baptist Church in Moorestown, N.J. He attended school in New Jersey and Philadelphia.
He joined the Marine Corps where he received his general equivalency degree while at the same time advancing to the rank of staff sergeant. He served in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart. In September 1989, he retired from the Marine Corps and had several jobs since then working on cars and trucks.
Survivors include his parents, of Philadelphia; his wife, Carolyn Jeter of Beaufort; two daughters, DaNa Jeter and Stefany Jeter of Beaufort; a sister, Barbara Rucker of Philadelphia; and a brother, Robert Jeter Jr., of Philadelphia.
Carlos Christopher Witherspoon
FLORENCE -- Carlos Christopher Witherspoon, 24, of Florence, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Grace Chapel AME Church with burial in Sixteen Gates cemetery.
Mr. Witherspoon was born Jan. 5, 1978, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., a son of JoAnn Gilmore. He was adopted by Diane Deloach Witherspoon in 1980. He was educated in Beaufort County public schools and moved to Florence in 1994.
Survivors include both his biological mother, of Bluffton, and adopted mother, of Sheldon; a daughter, Alasia Green of Florence; two sons, Demauriez Green and Carlos Witherspoon Jr., of Florence; three sisters, Lakeisha Griffin of Bluffton, Latasha Jones of Anderson and Farante Stewart of Sheldon; and a grandparent, Reatter Mae Deloach of Burton.

RIDGELAND -- Edith Pinkney, 52, of Ridgeland, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Gillison Branch Baptist Church, Pineland, with burial in the church cemetery.
Ms. Pinkney was born Nov. 7, 1949, in Ridgeland, a daughter of Nelmon Pinkney and Sibbie Woods Pinkney. She was a member of the Gillison Branch Baptist Church. She worked as a housekeeper for Sea Pines and Hilton Head Resort of Hilton Head Island.
She was preceded in death by a son, Nathan Pinkney.
Survivors include her mother of Ridgeland; a daughter, Roeith P. White of Ridgeland; two sons, Marion Pinkney of Los Angeles and Nicholas Pinkney of Savannah; a brother, Lenny Pinkney of Ridgeland; and four grandchildren.

LOBECO -- Michael Fields, 41, of Lobeco, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Fields was born April 12, 1960.

Susie Murray Chapman, 56, of Burton, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Rainey Hospice House, Anderson.

VERONA, Wis. -- Audrey Lee MacDonald 64, of Verona, Wis., wife of Christian "Chris" MacDonald, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, in Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care Center.
Mrs. MacDonald, was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Rapid City, S.D., a daughter of Inez Potts Stotelmeyer and Richard Stotelmeyer.
She was preceded by her mother, father and stepfather, Hugh Pullins.
Survivors include her husband of Verona; and a sister, Wanda Ardell of Beaufort.

Freddie E. Gertis
Freddie E. Gertis, 88, of Beaufort, widower of Dorothy Sutphin Gertis, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Bay View Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Copeland Funeral Home.
Mr. Gertis was born July 23, 1913, in Gulfport, Miss., a son of Charles Gertis and Carrie Gertis. He was a retired Marine Corps master sergeant and served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and as a drill instructor on Parris Island. After 30 years in the Marine Corps, he worked as a foreman of the Motor Transport Office on Parris Island.
He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Survivors include a son, Doug Gertis of Beaufort; a daughter, Shippie Gertis of Beaufort; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Lois B. Nettles
RIDGELAND -- Lois B. Nettles, 79, of Ridgeland, formerly of Beaufort, widow of Louis B. Nettles, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home, Beaufort.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ, Beaufort with burial in Evergreen cemetery.
Mrs. Nettles was born May 22, 1922, in Leesville, La., a daughter of Ollie Mitchell Billingsley and Lewis James Billingsley. She was employed by Edwards and Roses department stores. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was a resident of Beaufort for more than 50 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Tomisek of St. Helena Island; two sons, James A. Nettles of Effingham and Carl Ray Nettles of Bluffton; three sisters, Marie Nettles of Ruffin, Carolyn Nelson of Orangeburg and Irene Britton of Summerville; two half brothers, Robert Billingsley of New Bern, N.C., and William Billingsley of Costa Mesa, Calif.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
