OLANTA - Thelma Gibbs, 85, a retired food service employee with Florence County School District 3, died Thursday in a Florence nursing home. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today in Bethel Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Floyd Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Gibbs was born in Clarendon County, a daughter of Henry L. Barrineau and Ida Mims Barrineau. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was the widow of David F. Gibbs.
Surviving are a daughter, Frankie Welch of Turbeville; a son, Larry Gibbs of Abingdon, Va.; a sister, Emmaline Calcutt of Cades; a brother, Henry L. Barrineau of Lake City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

CHARLES TUTEN
VARNVILLE - Charles "Charlie" Tuten, 89, a retired town clerk, died Wednesday in a Charleston hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Varnville First Baptist Church, according to Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.
Mr. Tuten was born in Hampton County, a son of Luther S. Tuten and Carrie Gooding Tuten. He was a warrant officer with the Army and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Varnville First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn "Pippy" Pope Tuten; two sons, Charles Tuten Jr., of Norcross, Ga., and Wendell Tuten of Varnville; a daughter, Marilyn DeLoach of Hampton; two brothers, Herman R. Tuten of Hampton and Wilson "Red" Tuten of Varnville; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Hiers was born in Hendersonville, Tenn., a daughter of Major Jones and Lela Wright Jones Comer. She was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church. She was the widow of Johnny G. Hiers.
