PAWLEY'S ISLAND Doris O. Howell, 71, widow of the Rev. Robert J. Howell Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Union. Officiating will be the Rev. Don Alexander, the Rev. Ken Timmerman and the Rev. Milton McGuirt. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home of Georgetown, will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Howell was born Jan. 4, 1933, in Union County, a daughter of the late Fred Huffman O'Dell and Lenora Dotson O'Dell. She was a retired specialist with the S.C. Department of Social Services with 25 years of service. She also served with her late husband during his 29-year career as a minister with the S.C. United Methodist Conference. She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown.
Surviving are three sons, the Rev. Robert J. Howell Jr. of Summerville, Stephen M. Howell of Pawley's Island and Timothy O. Howell of Greenville; a daughter, Anne Howell Scott of Pawley's Island; six grandchildren, Robert C. Scott Jr., Kathrine Scott, Caroline Scott, Robert J. Howell III, Thomas Howell and Price Howell; three brothers, Jack O'Dell, Bill O'Dell and Fred O'Dell, all of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde O'Dell, Cecil O'Dell and Howard O'Dell and a sister, Ethel O. Kempel. Active pallbearers will be Barry O'Dell, Reece O'Dell, Ronnie O'Dell, Jimmy O'Dell, Phil Holden and the Rev. Monte King.
The family will receive friends at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Foundation, P.O. Box 5087, Columbia, S.C. 29250 or to the charity of one's choice. Graham Funeral Home, Georgetown, and S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, Union.
Bill Voiselle
William E. (Bill) Voiselle, 80, husband of Mary Gist Voiselle of 219 Austin Road, Union, died at his residence Friday morning, Jan. 23, 2004, after several months of declining health. Mr. Voiselle was born in Spartanburg on Sept. 20, 1923, a son of the late Johnny and Stella Kitchens Voiselle. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, and served as Sunday school teacher for the Earl Fowler Sunday school class. Mr. Voiselle was a graduate of Union High School and the University of Georgia. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired financial officer for Great Dane Trailers of Savannah, Ga. Mr. Voiselle was an avid golfer.
Surviving in addition to his wife are:five sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Betty Voiselle of Ringgold, Ga., Mike and Nancy Voiselle of Sandy Springs, Ga., David Voiselle of New Born, Ga., Philip Voiselle of Union and Steve Voiselle of Clinton; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Voiselle was predeceased by a sister, Mary Crocker, a brother, John Eddie Voiselle and a grandchild, Chris Voiselle. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Sunday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. The family is at the home, 219 Austin Road, Union. Margaret S. Kerr
Margaret Sanders Kerr, 67, of 241 Deepwater Road, widow of Bennie Stowe Kerr, died at her home Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at 10:15 p.m. after an extended illness.
Mrs. Kerr was born in Union on March 20, 1935, a daughter of the late Ernest Edward Sanders and Pansy Knox Sanders. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. Mrs. Kerr was formerly employed with United Merchants, Union Plant; Roses Dime Store and Royal Cleaners.
Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Jeannette Williams of Concord, N.C., and Betty Sanders Wilburn of Union; two brothers, J.B. Sanders of Union and Carrol Edward Sanders of Prosperity; a granddaughter, Casey Dawn Kerr of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Kerr was predeceased by two sons, David Aaron Kerr and Keith Yelton Kerr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price and the Rev. Clayton Price.
Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Sunday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Dudley Adams, Buford Brown, Douglas Smith, Paul Greer and Donald Ray Sanders.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7-9. The family is at the home of her sister, Betty Sanders Wilburn, 1007 Sardis Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Ethel B. Cohen
COLUMBIA Funeral services for Ethel Baldwin Cohen, 96, of Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the graveside in Rosemont Cemetery in Union conducted by the Rev. Jerrey T. Scott. Mrs. Cohen, widow of James Ike Elbert Cohen, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. Born in Buffalo, she was a daughter of the late Willard Ross and Ida Taylor Baldwin. She was a member of Dentsville Baptist Church, the Sunday School Class and Helping Hands. Mrs. Cohen was a former member of Westside Baptist Church in Union. She was a former employee of Union Mill and Companion Health Nurse.
Survivors include: seven grandchildren, Rita Warren of Columbia, Kaaren Lowder of Stafford, Va., Gayle Hall and Diane Ford-Greer of Whitmire, Jimmy, David and Michael Cohen of Union; great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cohen was preceded in death by her daughter, Azalee Lee Cohen Penland and sons, Floyd Cohen and Leonard Buddy Cohen.

Irvin Crawford
Irvin (Possum) Crawford of 169 Locus Pass Road, Union, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Crawford was born Feb. 9, 1932 in Jonesville, a son of the late Carrie L. and Jesse W. Crawford. He was retired from the J.P. Stevens Plant in Jonesville and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church of Jonesville.
Survivors include Louise W. Glenn and Trisa L. Glenn of the home; three brothers, Jessie (Noma) Crawford and Tommie Crawford, both of Jonesville and Joe Lewis (Sharon) Crawford of Buffalo, N.Y.; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Jean (Willie Earl) Jeter of Buffalo, N.Y., Margie Washington, Ires Smith and Shirley (Frank) Glenn, all of Jonesville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. D. Cooper. Burial will be in Mark Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Curly Vinson
WOODRUFF Arthur Curly Vinson, 75, husband of Sybil Cooper Vinson, of 23 Amgi Drive died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. A native of Union County, he was the son of the late Bernard and Ollie Tucker Vinson. He was a retired security guard with Mt. Vernon Mills and attended Woodruff Church of God.
Surviving in addition to his wife are seven sons, Henry Roddy, Larry Roddy, Roger Roddy, all of Woodruff, Perry Roddy of Roebuck, Gene Vinson of Anderson, Randy Vinson and Keith Vinson, both of Willoughby, Ohio; a daughter, Shirley Johnson of Union; four brothers, Ralph Edwards and Ken Edwards of Union, Francis Vinson of Coco Beach, FL, Gerald Edwards of North Carolina; a sister, Helen Ruth Carter of Union; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Vinson was predeceased by a daughter, Annette Roddy. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Woodruff Church of God by the Rev. James Shealy and the Rev. Buster Ball. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens. The family is at the residence. Lanford Funeral Home-Woodruff.

Robert E. Smart
Robert E. Smart, 82, of 106 Springdale Drive, widower of Mildred Smith Smart, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 9:34 a.m. in Greenville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Smart was born in Rutherford County, N.C., on Oct. 12, 1920. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Excelsior Plant. Mr. Smart was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include three sons: Robert Dale Smart of Pacolet, Brady Smart of Cowpens and Charles William Smart of Union. He was predeceased by a son and daughter: Linda Ann Smart and Joe Dean Smart. The family is at their respective homes. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Boyd H. Blackwell
Boyd H. Jackson Blackwell, 56, of 876 Forest St., Jonesville, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Blackwell was born in Union on Oct. 14, 1947, the only son of the late Boyd Blackwell and Mary Ruth Haile Blackwell. He was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church, the Jonesville Masonic Lodge and Jonesville Bass Club. Mr. Blackwell was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Cecil's Business College and was formerly employed with NAPA in Union.
Surviving are his care-givers, Randall and Kay Morgan, Pam and Jay Murphy and Dennis and Frena Morgan, all of Jonesville; two aunts, Betty Jo Fowler of Jonesville and Carrie Green of Spar, N.C.; an uncle, Archie Blackwell of Washington State and a number of cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel conducted b the Rev. Ralph Brown.
Burial will be in the Haile Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jason Fowler, Greg Fowler, Jimmy Wilkins, David Fowler, Steve Davis, Marion Gossett and James Haile. The family is at the home of Randall and Kay Morgan, 878 Forest St., Jonesville and will receive friends at the Holcombe Jonesville Chapel Tuesday from 6:30 until 8:30.

Bobby D. Fowler
Bobby Dempsey Fowler, 72, of 130 Gideon St., Jonesville, husband of Mary Evelyn Horne Cotton Fowler, daughter of the late Horace F. Horne Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at 6:05 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an unexpected illness. Mr. Fowler was born in Jonesville on Feb. 18, 1931, a son of the late John Henry Fowler and Dealie Dempsey Fowler. He was a life-time member of the Gilead Baptist Church, a member of Jonesville Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Union Shrine Club.
Mr. Fowler was a former employee with Union County in excess of 30 years and was honored on Nov. 12, 2003 at a banquet in recognition for his years of service. He was co-owner with his wife of the H&F Truck Stop Restaurant in Jonesville for 48 years. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy D. and Ann P. Fowler of Jonesville; a step-grandson, Paul G. Brown Jr. and his finance, Karen Steinmeyer.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Lawton Neely, with Masonic Rites. Active pallbearers will be Donnie R. Betenbaugh, Jimmy Wayne Gallman, Tommy Ivey, Dr. Jimmy Fowler, Sheriff Howard Wells and Dr. Charles Belue.
The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery Wednesday at 2:45 to form the honorary escort: Gilbert Smith, Buck Peay, Jimmy Wilkins, Barry Waddell, James Fowler, Philip Spencer, Paul Fowler, Harold Fowler and Mike Manus. All staff and employees of Union County are asked to sit as a group at the graveside. After 5 p.m. Tuesday the body will be at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Ann Fowler, 308 Pacolet St., Jonesville where the family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 until 9. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gilead Baptist Church Youth Ministry, Attn: Buck Peay, 515 S. Main St., Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Wardlaw Jenkins
Childs Wardlaw Jenkins, 85, of Lockhart, widower of Janie Lee Robinson Cudd Jenkins, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mr. Jenkins was born in Cherokee Falls on Aug.4, 1918, a son of the late George Washington Jenkins and Della Broom Jenkins and step-son of the late John Logan Jenkins. He was a Methodist. Mr. Jenkins was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post #76 of Lockhart and the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244. Mr. Jenkins was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice J. Allen, Wanda and Glenn Stein, all of Lockhart and Jennie Lee and Jerry Woodsby of Union; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Luke Jenkins and his wife, Brenda Jenkins of Lockhart and Dean Jenkins of Central; a sister, Ozell J. Ivey of Gaffney; 10 grandchildren, Melanie Bagwell of Spartanburg, Patti Turner, Mark Stein and Wendy Woodsby, all of Union; Wesley Jenkins of Lockhart, Casey Woodsby of Union; Penni Manus and Gina Childers, both of Jonesville; Marcie J. Thompson of Union and Janie Jenkins of Central; a step grandson, Jason Weaver of Central and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Burial was in the Lockhart Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Active pallbearers were Casey Woodsby, Wesley Jenkins, Mark Stein, David Turner, Phil Bagwell, Brian Childers, Randy Manus and Lewis Clark. Members of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244 formed the honorary escort. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Saturday night.
The family was at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Glenn Stein, 402 Mill St., Lockhart. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C. 128-C, Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the Lockhart Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 429, Lockhart, S.C. 29364. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
