HELEN M. SALLEY
ORANGEBURG - Helen M. Salley, 79, a former schoolteacher at Bob Jones University and private music instructor, died Friday in a local hospital. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Sunnyside cemetery. Burial will be directed by Thompson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Salley was a daughter of Lawrence A. Murray and Ruby Johnson Murray. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, and attended the University of South Carolina, Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Juilliard School of Music in New York and Bob Jones University in Greenville. She also served as a public school teacher for three years. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg and was the widow of Thomas B. Salley.
Surviving are two sons, Murray C. Salley of Gastonia, N.C., and Thomas B. Salley Jr. of Cordova; and four grandchildren.

DORRELL M. MARTIN
ISLANDTON - Dorrell M. "D.M." Martin, 72, died Friday in a Florence hospital. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Herndon Funeral Home in Walterboro. Burial will be in Peniel Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Martin was born in Colleton County, a son of Joe L. Martin and Nellie Harrison Martin. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Morningstar Martin; a son, Johnny Martin; three daughters, Jacquelyn M. Jarrell and Margie Beasley, both of Walterboro, and Bonnie Martin of Islandton; a brother, Richard E. Martin of Cornelia, Ga.; two sisters, Mamie L. McMillan of Walterboro and Dorothy Lagneaux of Texas; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

LAVERNE E. ROSENE
Retired Air Force Col. LaVerne Elmer Rosene, 83, of North Charleston, died Saturday in a local hospital. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in James A. Dyal's Oakbrook Chapel at Dorchester Memory Gardens in Summerville. Burial will be in Dorchester Memory Gardens with military honors.
Mr. Rosene was born in Walton, Ill., a son of Elmer Rosene and Fannie Wallace Rosene. He was a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio. He was a Baptist and the widower of Amelia Rosene.
Surviving are a daughter, Michele Booker of North Charleston; a brother, George Rosene of Grayslake, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

MOUNT PLEASANT - John "Johnny" Coaxum, 67, a retired boat operator with Charleston Naval Shipyard, died Thursday in a Charleston hospital. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in Goodwill AME Church. Burial, directed by Johnson-Halls Funeral Home, will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Coaxum was born in Mount Pleasant, a son of John Coaxum and Pearl W. Grant. He attended Charleston County schools. He was a Mason, a Boy Scout leader and a member of Goodwill AME Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosalee W. Coaxum; three daughters, JoAnn Coaxum of Sumter, Julie Gathers of Mount Pleasant and Sarah Bostic of Orangeburg; three sons, John M. Coaxum of St. Stephen, Mark Coaxum of Orange Park, Fla., and Nathaniel Coaxum of Charleston; five sisters, Hester Bennett, Ernestine Gillard and Mary Williams, all of Awendaw, Lucille Green of Mount Pleasant and Gladys Grant of Charleston; two brothers, Sammy Green and Joseph Grant, both of Charleston; and nine grandchildren.

Margaret Kafer Wiggins, 87, of North Charleston, a retired bookkeeper with Tassin & Tassin Machine Shop, died Saturday in a local nursing home. Mrs. Wiggins was born in Florence, a daughter of Arthur O. Kafer and Mamie Wright Kafer. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the widow of Leon W. Wiggins.

Mrs. McKean was born in Sutter Creek, Calif., a daughter of Francis E. Hawkins and Clarice Gilliland Hawkins. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Giles was born in Hanceville, a daughter of George Plunkett and Pearl Whalley Plunkett. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant and the widow of Clifford A. Giles.
Surviving are two sisters, Elsie Bice of Cullman, Ala., and Hazel Abercrombie of Scotsboro, Ala.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

DAVIS, Thomas
MANNING - Thomas Marion Davis, MD, FACS, died Monday, December 10, 2001, in a Manning hospital.
born July 6, 1919, in Branchville, SC, he was a son of the late George Bellinger Davis, Sr. and the late Louise McAlhany Davis. He was a graduate of University High School, University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina. He was a member of Blue Key and KSK honor fraternities at USC 1941-1943. He interned at Columbia Hospital of Richland County. He served as Battalion Surgeon of infantry, Hdq. Co., 1st Bn, 1st Reg., First Division, Fleet Marines; joined the First Division of Banika and Pavuvu in the Russell Islands, South Pacific; engaged in combat in Okinawa for 84 days in April, May and June, 1945; served in Tensin, China in Army of Occupation and as Executive Officer of First Marine Division Hospital; returned to the United States in June of 1946. Married Adele Davis in Christ Episcopal Church, Savannah, Ga. on August 31, 1946. He served his surgical residence at Roper Hospital, Charleston, S.C. until July 1947; then surgical residence at Columbia Hospital until July 1949; then one and a half years of surgical preceptorship under Dr. George T. McCutchen in Columbia, S.C.; moved to Manning in October 1950, and practiced surgery at Clarendon Memorial Hospital as Chief of Surgery for forty years, and was former Chief of Staff of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, of Clarendon, Sumter, Lee, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties for thirty years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of Sumter Clarendon Lee Medical Society, South Carolina Medical Society, American Medical Society, and was executive secretary of the 7th Medical District. He was a member of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, a member of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and S.C. Chapter of American College of Surgeons. Dr. Davis was a member of the Manning Rotary Club, past president, a Paul Harris Fellow, member of Col. Mathew Singleton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the South Carolina Huguenot Society, and the Family of Bruce Scot Society. He was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton since 1950, member of the Vestry, past Junior Warden and past Senior Warden. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Christian Academy of Manning and Laurence Manning Academy, a member of the USC Association of Lettermen, St. Peter's Masonic Lodge in Manning.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Adele Davis of Manning; three daughters, Marie Davis Buyck of St. Matthews, Harriet Davis Rawlinson and Caroline Davis Herring of Manning; a son, Thomas Marion "Bubba" Davis, Jr. of Manning; two brothers, George Bellinger Davis, Jr. of Lexington and Dr. William McAlhany Davis of Spartanburg; a sister, Margaret Davis Rogers of Columbia; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Rev. David Thurlow will officiate. Burial will follow in the Manning cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, and at other times at the residence, 511 Woodland Drive, Manning.
Memorials may be made to Clarendon Memorial Hospital, St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Summerton, and York Place Episcopal Home for Children, York, S.C.
