Lt. Rudolph Melvin Dempsey, 79, husband of Vivian Wiggins Dempsey, of 211 McSwain Drive, died December 8, 2001. born in Beaufort County, he was a son of the late Julius W. and Rose Nell Stone Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey retired as a Lieutenant with the State Highway Patrol after 38 years of service. He was stationed in Florence, Charleston, Lancaster, Spartanburg and Greenville. He was a member of Overbrook Baptist Church, a Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Clemson IPTAY and the South Carolina Troopers Association. He served in the U.S. Navy for eight years. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Patricia Smith of Summit, NJ, and Pamela Simpson and her husband, David, of Greenville; one sister, Frances Stern of California; two brothers, Jack and Davis Dempsey, both of Beaufort; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Meredith, and David Smith, and Tyler, Lauren and Christopher Simpson. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Malcolm Dempsey. Services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Overbrook Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Lance and the Rev. Marilyn Brown Neth, 72, of Charleston, died Thursday, December 6th at her home in Charleston, SC after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mrs. Neth was born March 20, 1929 in Lake Butler, Florida, the daughter of Eurie and Hazel Greene Brown. She attended Union County, Florida public schools and was a 1951 graduate of Florida Southern College. Mrs. Neth taught at John Cox Elementary and, for many years, Central Avenue Elementary School. She was a member of the Roper Hospital Auxiliary and Delta Zeta sorority and formerly belonged to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lakeland. Mrs. Neth is survived by her husband of 50 years, Carl N. Neth, one daughter, Susan Neth Howell and husband Scott, two granddaughters, Caroline Cullom Howell and Rebecca Reed Howell, all of Charleston, SC. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 9th at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Orange Grove Rd., in Charleston. Dr. Bachman Shirer Smith Jr.,
SULLIVAN'S ISLAND - Dr. Bachman Shirer Smith Jr., a well-known retired pediatrician and civic leader, died Tuesday. He was 87.
He was a son of the late Bachman S. Smith and Irene Gaillard Smith, and a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
Smith, a native of Charleston and a Sullivan's Island resident, served on the Roper Hospital Board of Visitors for 17 years and was chairman for three years. He was an active volunteer with the Medical University of South Carolina.
He served as chief of pediatrics at Roper Hospital and served on the Joint Policy Committee of Roper Hospital and MUSC. He received a career achievement award in 1994 from the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Smith served in the Army Medical Corps from 1942-45 before returning to Charleston to begin his own practice. He received a bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston in 1935 and a medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1939.
He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Agricultural Society, Carolina Yacht Club and the South Carolina Society.
He had served as president of the New England Society, the Country Club of Charleston and the Senior Golfers of South Carolina.
Smith is survived by his wife, Janet R. Smith, two sons, two daughters, a stepson, a stepdaughter, a sister, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was first married
to the late Eunice Green Smith.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery.
deRosset Myers
Longtime Charleston lawyer deRosset Myers, who was a board member of the South Carolina Red Cross, died Wednesday. He was 81.
Myers, a native of Charleston, was a partner in the law firm of Pritchard, Myers and Morrison. He was elected vice president of the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association in 1968 and president in 1969.
He served as chairman of the Charleston Red Cross, where he was instrumental in organizing programs such as volunteer enlistment and disaster preparedness planning and took an active role in all the chapter's fund-raising campaigns.
Myers was former president of Carolina Art Association. He was active with the Charleston Episcopal Churchmen and St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
The son of Thomas Englehard Myers and Louisa Rebecca Bacot Myers, he graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee and Duke University School of Law. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mordecai Myers, three children, a brother and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Arrangements are by Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.

Mary Louise Leffelman Hagerty
Services for Mary Louise Leffelman Hagerty, a cultural and civic leader, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charleston. Burial will be private.
Hagerty, 73, of Charleston, was a teacher who focused on remedial reading. She also had a strong interest in the arts, history and medicine.
She taught remedial reading at Courtenay Elementary School and Jenkins Orphanage. She received her degree in education from Duke University in 1950.
Hagerty formerly served on the boards of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Garden Club of Charleston.
She also served for two years as president of the Gibbes Art Gallery Auxiliary, formerly the Carolina Art Association, and was a registered guide for the Historic Charleston Foundation. She was also a cancer clinic volunteer and a past president of the Charleston County Medical Association Auxiliary.
Hagerty assisted her husband, Dr. Robert F. Hagerty, in his plastic and reconstructive surgery practice as an aesthetic technician.
She ran a horticulture business and invented and patented one of the first self-watering reservoir systems for indoor plants, Wick-It Easy Care.
The Hagertys also are known as the builders and designers of Round Point Farms, which is now The Point on Sullivan's Island.
Hagerty was the daughter of the late Louise J. Leffelman and Pauline L. Leffelman.
Survivors include her husband, a daughter, four sons, two sisters and 11 grandchildren.

Melissa Anne Fry, 26, of Hickory, N.C., died October 29, 2001, at her residence. She was born August 2, 1975, in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of Ingolf and Catherine Schluter and Thomas Fry. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was a student at N.C. State University.
Memorial services will be held, Saturday, 2 p.m., at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, 7 to 8 p.m., at BASS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME. The Revs. Thomas Gibson and Lory Beth Huffman will officiate.
