Dorothy Louise Roark Johns, 66, wife of Herbert W. Johns of 3289 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, died at her residence Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Johns was born in Union on April 18, 1937, a daughter of the late Russell Freeman Roark Sr. and Lula Estelle Ashe Roark. She attend the Church of God of Prophecy in Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Sara J. Jones of Union, Nancy J. Painter and Rachel J. Ramsey, both of Spartanburg; two sons, Herbert W. Johns Jr. and Harley A. Johns, Sr., both of Union; five sisters, Mamie Lou Horne, Frances Woods and Goldie Brock, all of Union; Bobbie Jean Pitts of Buffalo and Faye Phipps of Jonesville; two brothers, Russell F. Roark Jr. and Albert Roark, both of Union; five grandchildren, David Johns, reared in the home, of Union, Samantha Johns of Franklin, N.C.; Meredith Jones and Allen Johns, both of Union and Hope Ramsey of Spartanburg.

Mrs. Johns was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Ruth Johns, and a brother, Kenneth Roark. Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Union Church of God conducted by the Rev. Alton Stone, the Rev. Paul Tessnear and the Rev. William Adams.

The family was at the home of her daughter, Sara Jones, 102 Poplar St., Union and received friends at the funeral home Saturday night. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Ruby P. Varner
Buffalo native

Ruby Nell Petty Varner, 77, of Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, Union, widow of George W. Varner, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at 9:25 a.m. in Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg. Mrs. Varner was born in Buffalo on Jan. 1, 1927, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Frost Petty. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church and the Guiding Light Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roger D. and Debra Petty of Union; a sister, Joyce King of Buffalo; two brothers, J. T. Petty and Jackie Petty, both of Buffalo; three grandchildren, Angela Hart and Tracy Petty and wife, Amy, of Union and Chris Petty and wife, Crystal, of Gaffney; six great-grandchildren, Justin Hart, Nicholas Hart, Christian Petty, Alyssa Petty, Hunter Petty and Alyson Petty; 10 nieces and 8 nephews.

Mrs. Varner was predeceased by two sisters, Peggy Ray and Mildred Austin. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike Anderson, Jerry Yarbough, Jason Yarbough, Allen Petty, Michael Hawkins Jr. and Craig Price.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her grandson Tracy Petty, 244 Sweet Water Drive, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Hubert W. Ford
World War II veteran

Hubert W. Ford, 77, of 722 North Duncan By-Pass, husband of Lena O'Shields Ford, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 9:48 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mr. Ford was born in Newport, Tenn., on Nov. 1, 1925, a son of the late John Tipton Ford and Nettie Greene Ford.

He was a member and former deacon of Putman Baptist Church where he was a member of the Victory Bible Sunday School Class and was a member of Buffalo Masonic Lodge. Mr. Ford was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Bruce Lawson and Elaine and Harold Gregory, all of Buffalo; a brother: J.W. Ford of Buffalo; five grandsons: Brian Lawson of Union, Brad and Erica Lawson, Chad and Stacy Lawson, Heath and Chapel Gregory and Neil Gregory, all of Buffalo; a great-granddaughter, Blayke Lawson of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and Chad Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Aaron Slaughter, Charlie Childers, Jason Ivey, Neil Gregory, Brad Lawson, Brian Lawson, Heath Gregory and Jeffery Tucker.

Members of the Victory Bible Sunday School Class, deacons and former deacons of Putman Baptist Church are asked to assemble at the church today at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 722 North Duncan By-Pass, Union. Memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Robert E. Smart
World War II veteran

Robert E. Smart, 82, of 106 Springdale Drive, widower of Mildred Smith Smart, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 9:34 a.m. in Greenville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Smart was born in Caroleen, N.C., on Oct. 12, 1920, a son of the late Arbus and Elizabeth Padgett Smart.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Milliken & Co., Excelsior Plant. Mr. Smart was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors include three sons: Robert Dale Smart of Pacolet, Brady Smart of Cowpens and Charles William Smart of Union. He was predeceased by a son and daughter: Linda Ann Smart and Joe Dean Smart. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body remained at the funeral home and was placed in the church at noon today to await the hour of service. After 3 p.m. Sunday the family was at the home, 106 Springdale Drive, Union and received friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6-8 p.m. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Bobby D. Fowler
Former county employee

JONESVILLE Graveside services for Bobby Dempsey Fowler, 72, husband of Mary Evelyn Horne (Cotton) Fowler of 130 Gideon will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Lawton Neely, with Masonic Rites.

After 5 p m. Wednesday the body will be at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Ann Fowler, 308 Pacolet St., Jonesville where the family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 until 9. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Samuel Butler Strain
SHELBY, N.C.

Samuel Butler Strain, 84, husband of Sarah Violet Wilkins Strain of 132 Hillside Drive, Shelby, N.C., died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Cleveland Pines. Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Sissy and William Holcombe of Union; and grandchildren Sarah and Will Holcombe. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later. Bessie Mae Boulware
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Bessie Mae Lawson Boulware, 90, of Brookview Nursing Home, Gaffney, widow of Eugene L. Boulware, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 11:15 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Boulware was born in Union on Nov. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late Emma Lawson. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mrs. Boulware was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are: three sons, Lewis E. Boulware and Luther M. Boulware, both of Buffalo, and Fletcher Boulware of Union; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Tucker of Union; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bessie Mae Lawson Boulware, 90, of Brookview Nursing Home, Gaffney, widow of Robert Eugene Boulware, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 11:15 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Boulware was born in Union on Nov. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late Emma Merchants Lawson. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mrs. Boulware was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis E. and Betty R. Boulware and Luther M. and Donna Boulware, all of Buffalo, and Fletcher and Betty P. Boulware of Union; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Tucker of Union; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in the Mt. Lebanon Baptish Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Boulware, Bobby Boulware, Stanley Boulware, Donnie Boulware, Eugene Tucker and Roy Tucker. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Bud Willard, Roy Turner, J. R. Tankersley, Jackie Phipps, Fred Lunsford, Alfred Haney and Randall Liner.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and wll be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her son, Lewis E. and Betty R. Boulware, 342 Haney Road, Buffalo. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mattie Glenn
Sonoco Plant retiree

Mattie Glenn, wife of Julius Glenn, of 209 E. Williams St., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born May 8, 1937, the daughter of the late Susanna Land and Carl Boler. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and was retired from the Sonoco Plant after 30 years.

Surviving in addition to her husband are five daughters, the Rev. Gloria Fleming of Atlanta, Ga., Dorothy Land, Deborah Toland, Vivian Glenn and Sharon Kelly, all of Union; and a son, Kenneth Glenn of Union. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will be placed in the church Wednesday at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Janie I. Calhoun

Janie Inez Calhoun, 71, of 141 Dupre Farm Road, Buffalo, widow of J.W. Calhoun, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Myrtle S. Cudd Myrtle Smith Cudd of 209 Harwood Heights, Union, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. The family will be at the home, 209 Harwood Heights. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jessie C. Estes
Homemaker

Jessie Mae Corder Estes, 88, wife of John F. Estes of 301 Estes Road, Union, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Estes was born in Chester, May 31, 1915, a daughter of the late Will and Febbie Wages Corder. She was a homemaker and a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Irene Nave of Union; a brother, Leroy Corder of Great Falls; and two grandchildren, Joy Nave Smith and John Nave. Mrs. Estes was predeceased by three sisters, Ruth C. Grant, Maggie Elizabeth C. Brawley and Evelyn C. Smith; a brother, John Corder. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Brandon Bailey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. on Friday where the family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Hospice of South Carolina, 128 Medical Science, Dr., Union, S.C. 29379. Eugene Fant Sr.
World War II veteran

Eugene Fant Sr., 79, of Ocoee, Fla., widower of Lillian V. Fant, died January 22, 2004, after a sudden illness. Mr. Fant was born in Union County on Nov. 24, 1924, a son of the late John Henry and Assonia Fant. He graduated from Sims High School and Benedict College where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He retired as a school teacher in Jonesville. He was also a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, Eugene (Letitia R. Willis) Fant Jr.; five grandchildren, Crystal (Larry) Gore, Nicole Fant, Tamara Fant, Jamal Fant and Dorothy Lillian Fant; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Alex Gory, and other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Rice Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery in the Buffalo community with the Rev. Malachi Rodgers officiating. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.

Samuel B. Strain
President, Strain Realty, Ltd.

SHELBY, N.C. Samuel Butler Strain, 84, of 132 Hillside Drive, Shelby, N.C., died Monday night, Jan. 26, 2004, at Cleveland Pines. He was the beloved husband of Sarah Violet Wilkins Strain. Mr. Strain was born in Gaffney on March 2, 1919, a son of the late Samuel Jefferson and Janie McCullough Strain. He was a graduate of Gaffney High Scholl, attended Newberry College, and was a 1949 graduate of Wofford College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Strain was a broker and served as president of Sarah Strain Realty, Ltd.

Involved in community affairs, Mr. Strain was a former member of the board of Shelby Parks and Recreations and actively participated in the Shelby High School Football Thursday Night Supper Club. Mr. Strain was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church where he was an elder of the church. Before moving to Shelby, he served as an elder and member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Grover, N.C. He had served as a lay pastor for Duncan's Creek Presbyterian and Ellenboro Presbyterian churches. A talented athlete, Sam Strain loved and excelled in football. As a tight end for Gaffney High School, he was chosen to play in the inaugural Shrine Bowl Game for the South Carolina team. He was selected to the South Carolina All-State team and was named to the All-South Team by the Orlando Florida Sentinel in 1937.

Mr. Strain entered Newberry College on a football scholarship but was drafted in 1940 to serve in the U.S. Army. While in the Army he played on the All-Army football team. Following his discharge from the Army, he entered Wofford College where he finished his football career in 1948.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years are: three sons, Samuel Butler (Bee) Strain Jr., and his wife, Martha, of Shelby, Michael Wilkins (Mike) Strain of Shelby and Dr. Brian McCullough Strain and his wife, Charlotte, of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Jennifer (Sissy) Holcombe and her husband, William, of Union; a sister, Catherine Strain Pettit of Gaffney; a brother, Hood Strain and his wife, Catherine, of Anderson; a sister-in-law, Sara Hodge Strain of Gaffney; six grandchildren, Michael Wilkins (Wilkes) Strain Jr., Samuel Butler Strain, III, Sarah Jessee Strain, Sarah Simmons Holcombe, Alexander McCullough (Alex) Strain and William Eugene (Will) Holcombe Jr.

Mr. Strain was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Stewart, and three brothers, Herbert Strain, Lindsey Strain and Charles Strain. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Luke Harkey, the Rev. Alan Huff and the Rev. George Rolling. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, 106 Cherryville Road, Shelby. Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1444, Shelby, NC 28151 or Cleveland Pines Solarium Fund, 1404 North Lafayette St., Shelby, N.C. 28150. The family is at the home, 132 Hillside Drive, Shelby, N.C. Cecil M.
