(Hal) Green, Jr., 57, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, in a Georgetown hospital.Memorial funeral services will be held Monday, November 5, 2001, at 11 a.m., in Wayne United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Steve Holler.He was born May 14, 1944, in Kingstree, a son of Alice S. Green and the late Robert H. Green, Sr.He was retired from G&G; Wholesale. He grew up in Andrews and Georgetown. He attended Winyah High School and later lived in Columbia for a number of years. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and a former coach of Girls Softball with the Georgetown County Recreation Department. He was an active Gamecock Club Member. He was a member of Wayne United Methodist Church.Surviving are, his wife, Peggy R. Green; his mother of Georgetown; three daughters, Kathi G. Stevenson and her husband, Rusty, Pattie G. Ward and her husband, Jeffery, all of Georgetown, Ashley Reese of Georgetown and Francis Marion College; one son, Bryan Dunn of Augusta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Josh Stevenson, Hill Stevenson, Tripp Stevenson, Jana Stevenson, Kyle Patrick and Megan Ward; one brother, Will Green and his wife Donna of Georgetown; three sisters, Roberta G. Sherman of Hereford, Texas, Mary G. Kearse Blythewood and Becky Green of Georgetown; two foster brothers, Nathan Green of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bobby Green of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; a number of nieces and nephews and his mother-in-law, Alice Kimbrel of Grovetown, Ga.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME.Memorials may be made to Wayne United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. SMITH, Virginia
Virginia "Ginnie" Millicent Thompson McLaughlin Smith, age 66, Registered Nurse, Docent, loving mother, formerly of Canterbury House, Charleston and John's Island, died unexpectedly, November 2, 2001, after a brief illness.Virginia graduated from Polk Community College School of Nursing at the age of 53. She worked in Maine, where she was born, for many years as the Millinocket Community Hospital. She worked in Florida as a dental technician. Virginia worked as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina, Florida, and Maine. She also managed and owned a bakery in Bangor, Maine.Most recently, Virginia worked as camp nurse and Elderhoster staff at Camp Saint Christopher, an environmental education center owned by the Episcopal Diocese. She leaves behind a special family at Saint Christopher. In her spare time, she worked as a Docent for the Middleton Foundation at the Edmonston-Alston House at 21 East Battery. She was a member of Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, S.C.Virginia was the daughter of the late Harold and Sadie Thompson of Medway, Maine. She was born, April 2, 1935. She was married
to the late Warren McLaughlin, Medway, Maine, and the late John Willard Smith, Greenfield, Mass. She is survived by children, Bonnie and Quenten Clark, Farmington, Maine; Elaine York, Cathy and Steve Federico of Medway, Maine; and Nancy and Loren Porr of Topsham, Maine; John Smith of Massachusetts; Madeline Smith Holley and Mary Ann Maurey of Florida.Grandchildren include, Joseph and Benjamin Clark, Jodie and Mark York, Keersten, Emily, and Matthew Porr, Christopher and Jonathan Federico. She was a "special nana" to Brittany York of Medway, Maine.Sisters and brothers include, Glendor Coombs, Rena Savage, Lula Ireland (deceased), Levi Thompson and Ray Thompson. She has many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.She leaves behind special friends, Bill Slaughter of Cantebury House; cousin, Marjorie and Red Crossman, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.She was creative, artistic, an organizer, and possessed great strength and enthusiasm for life. She enjoyed interior decorating, gardening, and cooking. HACKER, Martin
Martin J. "Marty" Hacker, 63, of Goose Creek died Friday, November 2, 2001, at a local hospital. born January 20, 1938, in Staten Island, N.Y., he was the son of Martin J. Hacker and Mary Robinson Hacker. Mr. Hacker was a 1957 graduate of Middletown Township High School, Middletown Township, N.J., and attended Indian River Community College. He served 20 years with the U.S. Coast Guard and was employed by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Department, Ft. Pierce, Fla., from 1981-1994. While residing in Ft. Pierce he was a member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion Post 40 and served as the finance officer for the American Veterans. He and his wife Hazel moved to Goose Creek five years ago and are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mr. Hacker was a member of the American Legion Post 166, Fleet Reserve Branch 269, and a member of the 40-8 #1067 in Goose Creek. He was also an avid pool player. His wife Hazel N. Clanton Hacker, two daughters: Tammy Adkins, Summerville and Kelly Lovette, Goose Creek, four sisters: Dixie Pettison, Jensen Beach, Fla., Sharon Parker, Scottsboro, Ala., Joyce Monroe, Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Lorraine Branscomb, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and five grandchildren survive him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Monday, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Plantation Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a wake service beginning at 7 p.m. at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 100 S. Johnnie "Fiston" Hutson Frierson, 85, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at his home in Goose Creek. born May 30, 1916, in Williamsburg County he was the son of George Allen Frierson and Ollie Brothers. Mr. Frierson was retired as the custodian for Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Bishop England High School. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jackie; fours sons, George Frierson, Reno Frierson, Jackie Frierson, and Wayne Frierson, all of Goose Creek; five daughters, Betty Ann Clark, Jedburg, Nancy Buck Miller, Williston, S.C., Mary Frierson and Ruby Berkos, both of Goose Creek, and Pearl Russell, Moncks Corner; two brothers, Dudley Frierson, Johns Island, and Eugene Frierson, Walterboro; two sisters, Thelma Crowe, Goose Creek, and Virgil Frierson, Summerville; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. EHRHARDT - Miss Elizabeth "Lib" Carlton Varn, 56, of 4472 Paces Battle, Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Ehrhardt, died Saturday, Nov. 3, at her residence. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home of Walterboro.Miss Varn was born in Orangeburg and was a daughter of G.D. Varn, Sr. and Rosa Hearn Varn. She was the owner of Creative Concepts. She was a member of the Ehrhardt Southern Methodist Church, a graduate of Columbia College and received her Masters Degree in Human Resources from Georgia State University. She served with the Red Cross in South Korea and for 13 years in the United States. She was an avid traveler.Surviving are a brother, G.D. Varn, Jr. of Ehrhardt; nephews, G.D. Varn III and Henry B.
