ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Catherine Naomi Johnson Hughes, 50, of Orangeburg, S.C., died November 2, 2001, at an Orangeburg hospital.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL in Orangeburg. Rev. T. Lynn Bryant will officiate. Burial in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.
Mrs. Hughes was born August 12, 1951, in Charleston, a daughter of John Curtis Johnson and Catherine White Johnson. She was preceded in death by son, John C. Varney, Jr., and a brother Michael Johnson.
Survivors include, husband, Arthur Robert Hughes of Orangeburg; three daughters, Crystal Renee Varney of Orangeburg, Amy Mullins of Mountvlle, Conn., and Tammy Baines of Philadelphia, Pa.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Curtis Johnson of North; sister, Darlane Williams of North; four brothers, Marvin C. Johnson and Leon Johnson both of Summerville; Charles Johnson of Orangeburg, and David Johnson of Charleston; and four grandchildren.

William R. "Capt. Billy" McPherson, 72, of Charleston, passed away Friday, November 2, at a local nursing home. born in Charleston to the late William R. and Nettie Brownlee McPherson, Sr. His beloved wife of 42 years, Helen Adams McPherson predeceased him in 1991. He was a 1947 graduate of Bishop England High School and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mr. McPherson was retired after 43 years from Southeastern Shipping Company as a Stevedore. After retirement Mr. McPherson volunteered with the American Cancer Society, and was a member of the Stevedore Association. He was a devoted father and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He is survived by, his five sons, Gerald G. McPherson of Bonneau Beach, S.C., William R. McPherson, III, Marty McPherson, Gary C. McPherson, and Joseph E. McPherson, Sr., all of Charleston, a daughter, Gail E. Koch of Charleston, two brothers, Charles and John McPherson both of Charleston, ten grandchildren, Gerald McPherson, Jr., Michael McPherson, Michelle McPherson, David McPherson, Stephanie McPherson, Haley McPherson, Zachary McPherson, Olivia McPherson, Caitlin McPherson, and Joseph McPherson, Jr. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, November 5, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mrs. Enloe was born in Conway, South Carolina, the daughter of Thomas John Johnson and Zera Purvis Johnson. She was a former employee of the American Tobacco Company. Mrs. Enloe was a very active member of James Island Baptist Church, the WMU and a former Financial Secretary of the church. She was also a member of Ashley Lanes Senior Bowling League and NARFE.
Surviving are four brothers: S.C. Johnson, Lloyd Johnson and Mark Johnson all of Conway, SC and Jeff Johnson of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Thera J. Williams and Parniece J. Frederickson both of Charleston, SC; one step son James Michael Enloe of Greenville, SC and two step grandchildren.

He is survived by a son, James J. Lockwood, III of Mt. Pleasant, one granddaughter, Allison F. Lockwood of Mt. Pleasant, two sisters, Ella L. Shecut of Orangeburg, SC; Celia L. McDonald of Georgetown, SC, and a half brother, Robert H. Lockwood of Charleston.

Betty White Burks, 79, widow of Charles Morgan Burks, of Mount Pleasant, SC died Saturday, November 3, 2001 in a local hospital. Betty W. Burks was born in Mingo County, West Virginia July 14, 1922 a daughter of Elijah E. White and Alma Anne Campbell. She was a home economist for West Virginia University, Extension Service.
