MILLER, SR., Ernest
COLUMBIA - Services for Ernest Hite Miller, Sr., of Columbia, Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank of South Carolina will be held at Shandon United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 6, at 2 p.m., with interment following at 4:30 p.m. at Ebenezer cemetery in Trenton, S.C. The family will receive visitors in Columbia on Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, and at other times at the home of Caro and Cal Cassels, 112 Addie Street in Trenton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army for the benefit of victims of the World Trade Center tragedy, 1301 Lady Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201, or to the Music and Arts Fund at Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street, Columbia, S.C. 29205.
Mr. Miller died on Saturday, November 3, 2001. A native of Trenton, he was the son of the late Ruth Hite Miller and Willie Walter Miller. He attended the public schools of Trenton and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a degree in accounting, where he was in the Naval ROTC and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was twice on active duty in the Navy, serving three years in the Pacific in World War II as a Communications and Line Officer and was recalled to duty in the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Miller's entire career was in the field of banking, beginning with the Bank of Trenton. When it merged with First Citizens Bank of S.C. in 1980, he joined the Trust office in Columbia. Subsequently, he served in Spartanburg as a Regional Director before returning to the Columbia office. He served the bank as President and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors, a position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church where he served on the finance committee and was a member of the Joy Class. He served as a director of the Upper Savannah District, a member of the State Board of Education, and the S.C. Bankers Association.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean Caro Padget and the following, daughter and son-in-law, Caro and Cal Cassels of Trenton; sons and daughters-in-law, Hite, Jr., and Annette Miller of West Columbia, and Clay and Kim Miller of Dalton, Ga.; granddaughters, Cassie Cassels of Trenton and Meredith Cassels of Aiken; grandsons, Hite, III, and Cameron Miller of West Columbia, and Andrew, Grant, Bryan, and Chase Miller of Dalton. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Miller Simons of Florence and was predeceased by brothers W.W. Miller, Jr., and Edward E. Miller, and a sister, Dorothy Miller Wilson.
Hite Miller possessed the very highest level of character and integrity, and standards from which he never deviated. His Christian faith was deeply held and resulted in a life filled with love and compassion, generosity and wisdom.

Lorraine G. Zix, 81, of North Charleston, S.C., died November 2, 2001, in a local hospital.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday morning, November 5, 2001, at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church, at 9 o'clock. Burial will be private.

Donald Lyn Ramsey, 46, of Ladson, S.C., died November 2, 2001, in a local hospital.

HARRIOTT, Hattie
Mrs. Hattie Viola Nix Harriott, 66, of 659 Furman - Nixville Parkway, died Saturday afternoon in the Hampton Regional Medical center.
Mrs. Harriott was born in Hampton County, September 29, 1935 a daughter of the late Haston Monahue Nix and Tiny Hadwin Nix. Mrs. Harriott had retired from the Vacation Wear Manufacturing Company, and she was the widow of the late Nathan Carlisle Harriott.
Surviving are one son: Clyde M. Harriott of Estill; daughter and son-in-law: Patricia and Greg Mixson of Hampton; one brother, Linburg Nix of Hampton; and two grandchildren: Tiffany and Greg Mixson, Jr. of Hampton. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Michael Frederickson, with burial in the DeLoach cemetery near Nixville.
Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, and Tuesday until the hour of services.

Joseph H. "Red" Bokern, Jr., 76, husband of Hazel Fiddie Bokern of North Charleston died Saturday November 3, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Bokern was born Monday, December 8, 1924 in Charleston the son of the late Joseph Henry Bokern, Sr. and Mary Margaret Ferrera Bokern. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II and retired as a Boilermaker with the Etiwan Fertilizer Company. Mr. Bokern was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Charleston Rifle Club, Elks Lodge #242, and the American Legion Post #147. Surviving are his wife of 55 years Hazel F. Bokern, three sons: Joseph H. Bokern, III, George F. Bokern and Robert C. Bokern all of Charleston, 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, a sister: Geraldine B. Crosby of Walterboro and a brother: Ralph R. Bokern of Charleston. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. FLORENCE, S.C. - Helen Louise Smith King, 80, of 1085 S. Old Ebenezer Road, Florence, S.C., died Monday morning, November 5, 2001, at her residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, in the Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum directed by STOUDENMIRE-DOWLING FUNERAL HOME.
The family will receive friends, 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Mrs. King was born in Andrews, S.C., a daughter of the late Richard L. and Etta Boyd Smith. She taught in the public schools of Williamsburg and Darlington Counties and taught at Greenwood and Delmae Grammer Schools and the S.C. Industrial School for Boys in Florence County. She was a member of the local, South Carolina and National Education Associations. She was a member of Faith Southern Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bizzan DuBose "B.D." King, who died in 1999.
Surviving are one sister, Genelle (James) Abrams of Andrews, S.C.; and one nephew, James Richard Abrams of Andrews, S.C.
