Claude H. Bullington, Jr.
Retired from Cone Mills

Claude (Bull) Hoy Bullington, 74, husband of Grace Ellen Pruitt Bullington of Webber Lake Road, Union, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Bullington was born in Union County, a son of the late Claude Hoy Bullington, Sr. and Mae Phillips Bullington. He was of the Presbyterian Faith and life member of Masonic Lodge #75 and was retired from Cone Mills, Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Dale Foster and Vickie Jones both of Spartanburg; two sons, Joey Bullington of Union and Jerry Bullington of Greenbriar, Ark.; a stepson, Jim Mobley of Pacolet; three sisters, Ruth Toney, Louise Helms and Estelle Chastain, all of Union. Mr. Bullington was predeceased by a brother, William Bullington. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel with Masonic Rites. Visitation will follow the service at the chapel. The family is at the home of a niece, Mrs. Roger Gregory, 102 Partridge Road, Union. Stribling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Eunice T. Farr
Retired from Union County Schools

Eunice Taylor Farr, 67, of 628 Philippi Church Road, Union, widow of Harold S. Farr, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at 8:35 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Farr was born in Lockhart March 28, 1935, a daughter of the late Roy and Ruby Brown Taylor.

She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Farr was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from the Union County Schools as a Career Specialist after 27 years of service.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis H. and Vicki Farr; Bobby E. and Angela Farr, all of Union; a sister, Mardene T. Matthews of Union; and two grandchildren, Ricky Farr and Melody Farr both of Union. Mrs. Farr was predeceased by a brother, Roy Dennis (Bud) Taylor. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles and Rev. Bill Vanderford.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 628 Philippi Church Road, Union. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Vera Mae Gregory
Retired from Monarch plant

Vera Mae Gregory, 91, of 632 Fairview Church Circle, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at 8:20 p. m. at the home of her beloved cousins, Attorney Robert A. Bullock and Dora Livingston Bullock in Ballentine, S.C. Miss Gregory was born in Union on Nov. 2, 1911, a daughter of the late John Thomas Gregory and Martha Frances (Fannie) Ivey Gregory.

She was a life-long and very active member of the Beulah Baptist Church, serving as beginner's Sunday School teacher, G.A. leader, Sunbeam leader and director of the W.M.U. She was very active in community service and was loved by all who knew her. She read her Bible through every year for many years from Genesis to Revelations. She attended the Union County Schools in Santuc and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a sister, Florence Maude Gregory of the home; her cousins, Dora Livingston Bullock and her husband Robert A. Bullock of Ballentine. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Beulah Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Austin Bennett. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

Memorial may be made to the Beulah Baptist Church c/o Eva Smith, 838 Happy Valley Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 632 Fairview Church Circle. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Donald M. Quinn
Korean War veteran

Donald M. Gwinn, 70, widower of Katherine Mary Rizzo Gwinn, of 204 S. Church St., died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in Spartanburg regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Gwinn was born in Pauline, May 7, 1932, a son of the late Chester W. and Alberta Layton Gwinn.

Mr. Gwinn was a graduate of Union High School and attended the Citadel. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant, and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gwinn was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Renee G. Williams and Alberta Ann G. Comtois, both of Buffalo; three sons, William S. (Billy) Gwinn Sr. of Mebane, NC; James R. (Jimmy) Gwinn of Burlington, N.C. and Guy P. (Pat) Gwinn of Pawley's Island; a sister, Peggy G. Riser of West Columbia; a brother, James Randolph Gwinn of Richmond, Va.; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family is at the home, 204 S. Church St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Martha F. Humes
Adult literacy teacher

Martha Fincher Humes, 71, wife of Rev. Ronald J. Humes of 138 Bombing Range Road, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 4:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Humes was born in Union on Dec. 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Robert Charles Fincher and Addie Murphy Fincher. She was a member of the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, a member of the church choir and the W.M.U. and was teacher of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Humes was a graduate of Columbia Business College and had taught in the Adult Education Literacy Program in Union.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Charles J. Humes of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Ellis M. Fincher of Tryon, N.C. and Dr. Julian Fincher of Columbia; and three sisters, Margaret Fincher Corley and Elaine Fincher Huggins both of Lexington and Nancy Fincher of Blythwood.

Mrs. Humes was predeceased by brothers and sisters Dr. John A. Fincher, Jane F. Wade, Herbert B. Fincher, Dr. Robert Charles Fincher, Raymond Fincher, Addie May Fincher and Jessie Franklin Fincher. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Andrews and Dr. C. J. Calvert.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Present deacons and former deacons of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Pearl Porter Smith
Kelton native

Pearl Porter Smith, 95, formerly of 301 Canal Road, Lockhart, widow of Thomas Monroe Smith, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 in Valley Falls Terrace Nursing Home in Spartanburg. Mrs. Smith was born in Kelton on May 4, 1907, a daughter of the late Joseph Newton and Edna Theadora Tracy Porter.

She was a member of the Lockhart Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Hugh D. (Doris S.) O'Shields of Boiling Springs and Mrs. Nell S. Crocker and William T. Crocker of Spartanburg; a sister, Mrs. Dan (Louise P.) Orr of Winston Salem, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by three sons, Billy Byron Smith, Joseph T. Smith and Charles Smith. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Inman conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home of her grandson, Butch Crocker, 120 Madora Drive, Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, P. O. Box 1108, Union S.C. or to the Salvation Army, 614 Green St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dona J. Boyd
Farmer's Telephone employee

SUMTER Dona Jones Boyd, 54, beloved wife of 37 years of Rex Lee Boyd Sr., died at her residence Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. Mrs. Boyd was born in Union, the daughter of Elizabeth Hause DePratter and the late Alfred P. Jones. She was a customer service representative of Farmer's Telephone. She was an avid reader, a loving wife, and a mother who loved to make people laugh. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are four sons, Rex L. Boyd Jr. and his wife, Beverly and son, Houston of Sumter, Shane L. Boyd and children, Cameron and Crystal Coone and Dylan Boyd of Union; Paul J. Boyd and his wife, Michelle and children, Jake, Jackson and Gabby of San Antonio, Texas, and Bryce O. Boyd of Sumter; three sisters, Paula J. Garland of Union; Bonny J. Nesbitt of Asheville and Tara DePratter Sprouse of Union; a brother, Fred A. DePratter of Union.

She was preceded in death by her father, a very special grandmother, Jewel G. Hause, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Jerry Boyd. A celebration of life service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be FTC Corp..

The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 6:30 Wednesday prior to the service and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150. The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Constance G. Moorman

Constance Good Moorman, 51 of Apt. 5-F, 683 Rice Ave. Extension, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Wright Funeral Home of York.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 204 S. Church St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rev. Jesse D. Stephens
Retired Baptist minister

WALKERTOWN, N.C. I Corinthians 4:2; Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. The Rev. Jesse D. Stephens, age 83, of 4529 Oakley Ct., died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 6, 1919, in Laurens County, S.C., a son of the late Willie and Mary Graydon Stephens.

He was a retired Baptist preacher, serving over 40 years and was a member of Northside Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. Rev. Stephens graduated from Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, Hendersonville, N.C. He was pastor of churches in Laurens, Greenville, and Union counties in South Carolina. His last pastorate was Fairview Baptist Church, Greensboro, where he preached for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Hassie Ford Stephens of the home; a daughter, Jessie (Larry) Easler of Walkertown; five sons, Hobart (Brenda) Stephens and Grady (Dorothy) Stephens of Walkertown, Heyward Stephens of Gray Court, S.C., Jerry (Kathy) Stephens of Lothian, Md., James (Priscilla) Stephens of Aiken, S.C.; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m., Thursday at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Roberson, the Rev. Keith Purser, the Rev. Larry Easler, the Rev. Jason Stephens and the Rev. Torrey Easler. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7-9 at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, 141 Smith-Edwards Road, Kernersville, N.C. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. (Absent from the body, present with the Lord.)
