LANGFORD, Philura
Mrs. Philura Varn Langford, 85, died early Saturday morning in a Beaufort health facility after an extended illness.
Mrs. Langford was born in Smoaks (Colleton County), November 19, 1915, a daughter of the late William Henry and Alexina Sauls Varn, Sr., Mrs. Langford had retired as director with the Council on Aging in Colleton County, and was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hampton, where she had been active with the Catholic Women's Club. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and the Magnolia Garden Club.
Surviving are, two daughters, Alexina Langford Strozier, and son-in-law, Wayne A. Zuranda of Okatie, S.C., and Marguerite Castles Toyne of Cashiers, N.C.; one brother, William Henry Varn, Jr., of Smoaks; two sisters, Laurine Varn Cummings of Hampton, and Rebecca Varn Coleman of Seabrook, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Alexina Strozier Aimar of Okatie, S.C., and Kea Strozier and husband Paul Whatley of Orangeburg, S.C. There are four grandchildren. Graveside services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m., in the Hampton cemetery, conducted by Father Michael Hussey, and directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMPTON.

SOUTER, Catherine
SUMTER, S.C. - Mrs. Catherine Souter, 43, of 335 Bowman Drive, Sumter, S.C., formerly of Moncks Corner, S.C., died September 25, 2001, at a Cola, S.C., hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2001, at Greater St. James AME Church. Pastor Christopher Smith will officiate. Burial in the church cemetery. Catherine Souter was born May 3, 1958, in Eutawville, S.C., to Frank and Clara Greene, her father, Frank, preceded her in death, Catherine was educated in New York City public schools. She graduated from Eli Whitney High School in June 1977. She attended Hunter College where she studied computer science. Catherine worked as a bond trader for many years with Dunn and Bradstreet Financial Compay. She also worked for the city of N.Y. as a social worker for the Medicaid Department. Catherine became a member of Calvary AME Church where she was a faithful member. Catherine later moved to Sumter, S.C., where she became a member of Bethel AME. In 1986 she united in holy matrimony to Mr. Paul Souter.
Survivors include, her two children, Master Paul Souter, Jr., and Princess Brittany Martin Souter, both of Sumter, S.C., her loving mother, Clara Greene of Moncks Corner, S.C., her loving husband, Paul Souter, six sister, Mrs. Ella Peoples of Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Hannah Greene of Florida, Mrs. Eugenia Chestnut of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ms. Vivian Thomas of Moncks Corner, Ms. Beaulah Haden of Brooklyn, N.Y., a nd Ms. Mamie Green of Orange, N.J., four brothers, Mr. Isaac Green of Moncks Corner, S.C., Mr. O'Neal Greene of N.Y., Mr. Kelvin Greene, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mr. Frank Greene of Bronx, N.Y.

Mr. Beauchemin was born on December 5, 1917, in North Oxbridge, Mass., a son of the late Joseph Beauchemin and Albina Beauchemin. He was a United States Army World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, serving in the 375th Truck Co. at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. Mr. Beauchemin retired as a heavy-duty truck driver for the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Surviving are his wife of North Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Marcel Beauchemin, Jr., of Cross, S.C., and William E. Beauchemin of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, C. Annette Waters and Frances E. Monk, both of North Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and nieces.

Mrs. Marguerite Reed Larsen was born on August 18, 1915, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of Louis Lockwood Reed, Sr., and Henrietta Bulwinkle Reed. She was a retired employee from the Accounting Department at H. Steenken & Company and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
She is survived by her husband of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Lib Nuemeister of Orangeburg, S.C., and Virginia Miller of Rock Hill, S.C.; one sister, Jeanette Burn of Charleston, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Peebles-Curry-Durden announces the death of Dora M. Mason, age 85, of Swainsboro, Ga., at the Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro, Ga., on Saturday, September 29, 2001, after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at 2 p.m., at Southside Baptist Church in Swainsboro, Ga., with the Rev. Earl Warnock and Rev. Hershel Clements officiating. Mrs. Mason will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Swainsboro City cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. Mason was pre-deceased by her husband, Julius Mason, a grandson, Dale Smith, and a son-in-law, Larry Clark. She was a native of Emauel County and was retired with Creston's and was a homemaker. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Swainsboro, Ga.
Survivors include, three daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Lawson Smith and Kay and Verlyn Arrington of Swainsboro, Ga., and Virgie Clark of Columbia, S.C.; one son, Gene Mason of Lewisburg, Tenn.; two sisters, Roberta Rush and Evelyn McDaniel of Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

JACKSON, Charles
Charles Loyd Jackson, 87, of Macungie, died Sunday, September 23, in Lehigh Center, Macungie. He was the husband of Dorothy A. (Butler) Jackson, who died in 1992. The relatives and friends of Charles Loyd Jackson are invited to attend his memorial services at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, Thursday, October 4, 2001, at 1 o'clock. Mr. Jackson was an Army Infantry Colonel before retiring in 1968 as assistant chief of staff (civil affairs), U.S. Army Pacific. He was a battalion commander in the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, landing on Utah Beach at Normandy on D-Day. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Ardennes/Alsace and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, a Legion of Merit Award, a Croix de Gurerre with Palm, a Belgian Fourragere of Leopold, a Purple Heart and other campaign awards and foreign decorations.
He was commanding officer of the Stuttgart and Heidelburg Military Government Detachment in Germany 1945-47. He served as senior adviser to the Japanese 1st Division, 1952-55, and to the Chinese Nationalist 1st Field Army, 1958-60. He commanded the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, 1956-58, and was the senior advisor of organization and training in the military assistance advisory group, Vietnam, in the early stages of the Vietnam War.
He was a 1938 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and did post graduate studies at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolkd, Va., Army War College, Carlisle, Cumberland County, and George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
born in Worthington, Mo., he was a son of the late Robert R. and Goldie (Cooley) Jackson.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Survivors include, son, Charles L. Jackson, II, of Macungie; sister, Mary Crocker of Mount Pleasant; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
