James Thomas Sr.
Retired from Piedmont Steel

JONESVILLE James Thomas Jr., 55, of 308 Alman St., Apt. 28, Jonesville, died Feb. 9, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. He was born in Union March 19, 1947, a son of the late James Thomas Sr. and B. Ethel Moore. He was an Army veteran and member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a retired steel worker with Piedmont Steel.

Surviving are two brothers, Paul Thomas of Gaffney and Jack Thomas of Jonesville; three sisters, Queen Fernandez and Lelia Thomas of Jonesville, and Paula Foster of Pacolet; and a special family, Ms. Fannie Mae Means and children Anthony, Barbara and Teresa Means.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Baptist Church in Jonesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today until 7 p.m. at the Union Community Funeral Home and again on Wednesday morning from 10 until noon.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 308 Alman St. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Flora D. Haney
Retired textile employee

Flora Jean Davis Haney, 53, of 185 Bailey Road, Buffalo, wife of Norman Dean Haney, died at her residence Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at 11:50 p.m. after a sudden illness. Mrs. Haney was born in Union on July 14, 1950, a daughter of the late Fred James Davis Sr. and Darrenell Deputy Davis. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis was a retired textile employee.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Gloria Haney of the home and Cynthia Schulter of Georgia; a son, Thomas Haney of Buffalo; three sisters, Thelma Bledsoe and Wanda Brock, both of Buffalo, and Shirley Turner of Spartanburg; three brothers, Roy Davis and Jerry Davis, both of Union and Fred Davis Jr. of Laurens; five grandchildren, Amber Allison of the home, Ashley and Katie Colpetzer, both of Georgia and Dylan and Kinsley Haney of Buffalo; three step-grandchildren, Cristin Schulter, Carlie Schulter and Dusty Stephens; and a special friend, Kent Stephens of the home.

Mrs. Haney was predeceased by two brothers, James Robert Davis and Kenneth Wayne Davis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Turner, Chad Turner, Shane Bledsoe, David Bledsoe, Gerald Billings and Earl Beheler. The body is at the home, 185 Bailey Road, Buffalo and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Constance G. Moorman
Ellen Sagar Nursing Home employee

Constance Good Moorman, 51. wife of Willie Lee Moorman, of 683 Rice Ave, Extension 5-F, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 14, 1952 in Winston-Salem, N.C., a daughter of the late Wilma Good Carter and James Thompson. Mrs. Moorman was employed with Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a brother, Frank Good of Union; six sisters, Dorothy Mae Carter of New York City, Anna Jean Pendergrass (Willie) of Rock Hill, Brenda Thompson (Linwood) of Plainfield, N.J., Loretta Sanders and Caretta Clowney (Michael), both of Union and Patricia Thompson of Lockhart; and a niece reared in the home, Marketta Nelson of Philadelphia, Pa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon with the Rev. Raymond Davis officiating. The Rev. W.T. (Dub) Massey will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at Wright Funeral Home in York and at other times at the home and also at the home of Loretta Sanders, 216 Pinetree Lane in Union. The body will be placed in the church Thursday at 1 p.m. Wright Funeral Home of York has charge of arrangements.

Dora F. Woods

Dora Flemming Woods of Union died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill. She was the daughter of the late George and Martha Koon Flemming. The family is at the home of her daughter, Freddie Russell Flemming, 317 S. Mountain St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home.

J. D. Allen
Retired Milliken executive

SPARTANBURG J. D. Allen, 85, of 144 Shoreham Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Mr. Allen was born Oct. 19, 1917 in Habersham, Ga., a son of the late James Lonzo and Idella Elrod Allen. he was preceded in death by his former wife, Jeanette Gittens Allen in 1978 and by two brothers, James Esco Allen and Loy Hughes Allen.

He retired in 1977 as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He was a retired vice president of Milliken & Co. after 53 years of service from June 1933 until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Allen also retired as a real estate appraiser for Marion R. Griffin and Co. in 1998. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and was a former member and deacon of the Baptist Church of Union.

Mr. Allen was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Daniel Morgan Chapter; the American Legion and the Lions Club of Spartanburg. He was a former director of the Carolina Foundation of USC-Spartanburg, and a former member of the Boy Scouts of America District Committee. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and was a graduate of the School of Business at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Survivors include: his wife, Mildred Wimberly Brown Allen of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hershel Kenneth and Susan Allen of Norcross, Ga., and Charles Raymond and Katherine Johnson Allen of Spartanburg; three step-daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia Brown and Kirkland Smith Johnston; Sandy Brown and H. Gaines Warlick III and Catherine Brown and Edward Patrick Crowley, all of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Charles Raymond Jr. and Matthew Wade Allen, both of Spartanburg; eight step-grandchildren, Mary Kirkland Johnston of Columbia, Catherine Deitrick Johnston of Spartanburg; 2nd Lt. John Blassingame Johnston of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, John Rutledge Hastings Jr., Halford Gaines Warlick IV, and Edward Patrick Crowley Jr., all of Spartanburg; Sherry Lynn Watson and Paul Randall Watson, both of Norcross, Ga; one step-great grandchild, Victoria Niciole Watson of Norcross, Ga., and a faithful family friend and housekeeper for 51 years, Irene Cook of Pacolet.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. George L. McGill Jr. and the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Charles Raymond Allen Jr.,. Michael Williams Allen, Edward Patrick Crowley Jr., John Rutledge Hastings Jr., 2nd Lt. John Blassingame Johnston and Paul Randall Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible Class, Elders, and Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P. O. Box 461, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304.

The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.

George C. Gregory Jr.
Assistant Buffalo fire chief

George Carlton Gregory Jr., 57, husband of Elizabeth Farmer Gregory of 233 Bailey Road, Buffalo, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at 11:18 a.m., in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Gregory was born in Union County Nov. 1, 1945, a son of Ruth Wix Gregory of Buffalo and the late George Carlton Gregory, Sr.

He was a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Outreach Leader, Training Union Director and was a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years. He was Assistant Fire Chief and Treasurer. He was named Firefighter of the Year at Buffalo Fire Department in 1998 and 1999.

He was a member of the Union County Fireman's Association, and was named Union County Fireman of the Year in 1978. In 1998 and 1999 he received the J. W. Sullivan Memorial Award for Firefighter of the Year and in 2001 he received the John L. Kingsmore Sr. Chief's Award. He was a 1963 graduate of Union High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina.

Mr. Gregory was formerly employed as an agent with Liberty Life Insurance Co. and had worked with United Merchants-Buffalo Plant, and was retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections, Tyger River Facility. Active in community affairs, Mr. Gregory was a member of the Union Band-Aide Club, had served as a CPR instructor, was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit and more recently performed with the Boogaloo Broadcasting Company's performances Turn the Wash Pot Down and Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Amy E. Gregory of Greenwood. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson and the Rev. Wayne Jones. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Benjamin Wages, Richie Brown, Doug Johnson, Ernest Crocker, Walker Smith and Stanley Wells.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Ralph Lawson, Members of the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department, members of the Union County Fireman's Association, members of the Holmes Bishop Sunday School Class and Dr. Tom Young. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home 233 Bailey Road, Buffalo. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department, Buffalo, S.C. or to the Buffalo Baptist Church Choir Robe Fund, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jerry W. Williams
Vietnam veteran

ROCK HILL Jerry Wayne (Monn) Williams, 53, of 363 Emma Wood Lane, husband of Cindy Ivey Williams, died at his residence Feb. 10, 2003. A native of Rock Hill, he was a son of the late Earl Isaac Williams and Hannie Ervin Whisanant Williams. He was a Marine veteran of Vietnam, a 1968 graduate of Rock Hill High School and attended York Technical College. He was self-employed as a concrete-electrical contractor. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Erica Williams of Augusta, Ga.; a special niece, Tish Gregory Brannen of Edgemoor; a brother, Billy Ervin Williams of Rock Hill; and two sisters, Becky W. Baker and Margaret. Godwin, both of Rock Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at the Greene Funeral Home NW Chapel by the Rev. Weldon Fallaw. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery on Cherry Road. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p. m. tonight at the Greene Funeral Home N W Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Wayne (Monn) Williams Fund, P.O. Box 66, Edgemoor, S.C. 29712. Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Mary K. Laws
Union native

ARLINGTON, Texas Mary Victoria Keisler Laws, formerly of Union, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Arlington Memorial Medical Center, Arlington, Texas, following a brief illness. Mrs. Laws was born in Union, a daughter of Bessie Blakely Keisler of Union and the late J. Norman Keisler. She attended Union County schools. She was the widow of Staff Sgt. (retired) Henry Lee Laws, USAF, who died in May 1986. They had retired in Arlington following more than 20 years service in the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Mary Lee Laws Buettner of San Antonio, Texas, and Mrs. William (Beverly) Tucker of Clarksville, Tenn.; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren; four sisters, Gladys K. Vaughan, Claudette K. Knox, Tillie K. Gregory and Vera K. Henderson, all of Union; two brothers, Vel Dee Keisler and James Keisler of Union; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Laws, Juanita Wilkins and Adlyne Kelly Laws, all of Union, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Unity United Methodist Church on Hart Street conducted by the Rev. Dr. Nathan K. Gilstrap. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Union, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379. Internment for Mrs. Laws was held in Arlington, Texas today. James T. Jeter
Retired from Uniblend Spinners

James T. Jeter 64, of 404 W. Henrietta St., Union, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at Spartanburg Regional Health Care Systems. Mr. Jeter was born Dec, 25, 1938, the son of the late Henry Jeter and Janie Glenn Jeter.

Mr. Jeter attended Union County Public Schools and retired from Uniblend Spinners. Surviving are his widow, Betty Shelton Jeter of the home; four sons, James C. Jeter of Jonesville, Vincent E. Jeter of Rock Hill, Osiris Umbares of Union and Ricky D. (Georgelyn) Jeter of Rock Hill; and a daughter, Judy (James) Weeks of Union. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at McBeth Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The family is at the residence of his daughter, Judy Weeks, 302 Arthur Boulevard. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bobby G. Leonhardt
Retired from Carlisle Finishing

Bobby Gene Leonhardt, 70, of 226 Mill St., widower of Hazel Johnson Leonhardt, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Leonhardt was born in Union on Aug. 24, 1932, a son of the late H. Hayward and Allie Mae Lawson Leonhardt. He was a member of the Glory Baptist Church. Mr. Leonhardt was retired from the S.C. National Guard, Union unit, and also retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Kim L. Brown of the home, Tammy L. and Tim Cooper of Greer and Tonya L. and Dewayne Evans of Dalton, Ga.; a sister, Mildred Hawkins of Union; a brother, James Frank Leon-hardt of Union; four grandchildren, Leigh Anne Brown, Lee Cooper, Chuck Rogers and Stephanie Rogers; two great-grandchildren and a number of special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p m. Saturday at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Jarvis and the Rev. Christopher Carr. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 226 Mill St., Union, Memorials may be made to the Glory Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 178, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James Sims
Retired Sealtest employee

James Sims, 83, of 128 Young Alley, husband of the late Colene Jeter Sims, died Feb. 8, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Sims was born in Union County on March 29, 1919, he was a son of the late West and Mattie Osmond Sims. He was retired from Sealtest as a truck driver and a member of Antioch AME Zion Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ecola Weeks of Union, a son, James Glenn Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 29 great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch A.M.E. Zion church in Union with the Rev. Vernell Speights officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Friday from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 128 Young Alley, Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
