William D. Johns

William David (Mac) Johns, 84, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at 6:30 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Charles B. Medford Sr.
World War II veteran

CLYDE Charles Bryan Medford Sr., 80, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Wayne William and Fannie Mae Chambers Medford.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Debruycker and a granddaughter, Wendy Leigh Murphy. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He roomed with General Patton during a hospital stay and met Marilyn Monroe while she was there visiting the troops. While in service he was a champion boxer in his weight class, and at one time, Joe Lewis, laced up his gloves. He later was a self-employed farmer and loved horses, hunting, and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by four daughters, Bonita Joan Turner, and her husband, Bill, and Judith Elaine Scott, and her husband, Kenneth, both of Union, Joyce Gail Gregory of Putman, and Mary Ann Murphy and her husband, Robert Paul; four sons, Charles Bryan Medford Jr. of Stedman, N.C., Darryl Medford and Billy Wayne Medford and his wife, Barbara, both of Union, and Wild Boone Medford of Akron, Ohio; four sisters, Ethel Stuart, and her husband, Norman, and Kathleen Muse, both of Clyde, Nancy Wells and her husband, Johnny, of Canton and Beulah, Zunwalt, and her husband, Benny, of Deer Park, Texas; three brothers, Robert Taylor Medford, and his wife, Gwen, Harold Hardy Medford and his wife, Wilda, and George Jones Medford, and his wife, Linda, all of Clyde; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services at 2 p.m. on Wednesday with the Rev. Alan Davis and the Rev. Glenn Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Randy, Gene, Delbert, Mike, Earl, David Paul and Dean Medford, David Turner, and Robert, Kenny and Kevin Scott. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville, N.C. 28785.

Rosa P. Thompson

Rosa A. Pendergraph Thompson, 85, of 104 McKanic Road, widow of Wilbert Thompson, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

William R. Tucker
Cone Mills retiree

William Rion Tucker, age 72, husband of Mable Sprouse Tucker of 214 Catawba St. Union, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Tucker was born in Bogansville community of Union County, Dec. 29, 1931, a son of the late Louie and Fannie Smith Tucker. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Tucker was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Union Masonic Lodge # 75.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Barbara Voiselle of Buffalo; one son, Ritchie Van Tucker of Buffalo; one sister, Etta Tucker Poole of Bluffton; one brother Harling Tucker of Boiling Springs; three grandsons, Benjamin B. Tucker of Germany, Roy Thomas "Tommy" Lawson Jr. of Union and Christopher David Reece of Buffalo; and one great-grandson, Christopher Reed Lawson of Santuc.

Mr. Tucker was predeceased by four brothers: Smith Tucker, Walker Tucker, Lewis Tucker and Stobo Tucker. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo United Methodist Church by the Rev. Phillip Chandler and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Hal Gregory, Roy Tucker, Eugene Tucker, Ricky Tucker, Larry Quinn and Leslie Young.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p.m. Thursday to form the honorary escort: Junior Vaughn, Dave Malloy, James "Shug" McMillian, Mack Elliott, Glenn Caldwell, W.H. Pruitt, Joe Plemmons and A.H. Harmon. Members of the Curtis Sanders Sunday school class of Buffalo United Methodist Church are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

Jesse S. Gowan
Retired HVAC installer

GASTONIA, N.C. Jesse Stewart Gowan, 62, of 845 Vista Mountain Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at his residence. He was a native of Spartanburg, a son of Johnnie Sue Smith Gowan of Jonesville and the late Stewart Richard Gowan. He was a retired heating and air conditioning installer. Mr. Gowan was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Clover.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Margaret Wilson Gowan; a son, Michael Hyatt of Terrelton, Okla., four daughters, Mary Allen of Huntersville, N.C., Margaret D. McKenzie of Clover, Linda A. Lanier of China Grove, N.C. and Janice M. Pagoota of Mount Holly, N.C.; a brother, Bobby E. Gowan of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Judy Hatfield of Midland, Texas, and Kay Vaughan of Jonesville; 16 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a great great nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Clover conducted by the Revs. Marvin Carson and Olin Giles. Interment will follow in Long Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas, N.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, N.C., 28053. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly has charge of arrangements.

Anthony Alonzo Hunter

Anthony Alonzo Hunter, 30, of 218 Peakeville Road, Buffalo, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Gibson & Brown Funeral Home.

Thelma F. Roark
Retired from United Merchants

Thelma Cordia Fox Roark, 86, formerly of Union, widow of Stanley G. Roark, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at 7:55 pm. in the Mountain View Nursing Home in Spartanburg. Mrs. Roark was born in Morristown, Tenn., Feb. 4, 1917, a daughter of the late Joe and Mary Paralee Snowden Fox. She was a Baptist and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are two sisters, Agnes F. Bloodworth of Donalds and Edith Pat Thomas of Pennsylvania; a brother Connie Fox of Daytona Beach, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Rick Cook. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George Sligh Ruff Jr.
World War II veteran

George Sligh Ruff, Jr., 133 Clairmont Road, Union, passed away Feb. 17, 2003. Mrs. Ruff was born in Newberry County on May 3, 1917, a son of the late George S. Ruff Sr., and Nenie Caldwell Ruff. A graduate of Newberry High School, he was a veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for service with the IV Infantry Division in the invasion of Normandy.

Mr. Ruff was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was a member of American Legion Post 22 for 47 years. For more than 50 years he was the owner and operator of Gadberry Amoco Service, South Street. He also worked at Greer's Service Station of Union. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. (Lib) Ruff of 52 years; a daughter, Margaret C. (Margie) Ruff of the home and a son; Lt. Col. George R. Ruff and his wife Margarita Ruff of Alexandria, Va. Mr. Ruff has four grandchildren: Bradley Ruff, Brian Ruff and Barton Ruff of Athens, Ala., and Gabriella Ruff of Alexandria, Va. Also three sisters, Mrs. Dayton E. (Catherine) Hardwick of Bedford, NH; Mrs. Edward W. (Frances) Counts of Prosperity, and Mrs. Ralph (Elizabeth) Baker of Newberry.

He was predeceased by a brother, James C. Ruff of Union. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in Union Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Gary Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church, St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Henry A. Hawkins Jr.
U.S. Navy veteran

Henry A. Hawkins Jr., 68, of 2nd St., (Ottaray Community), Union, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at 3:59 a.m. in Laurens County Hospital. Mr. Hawkins was born in Union on Jan. 17, 1936, a son of the late Henry A. Hawkins Sr. and Elizabeth Enlow Hawkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from Enoree Mill.

Surviving are four sisters, Ada Royer and Barbara Robinson, both of Chester, and Grace Silvers and Carolyn Steagall, both of Union; and two brothers, Burley Hawkins of Union and Harold Hawkins of Roebuck. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside services. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Willliam David (Mac) Johns, 84, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at 6:30 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mr. Johns was born in Union on Aug. 19, 1919, a son of the late Joseph Furman and Addie Edwards Johns. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Herbert Johns of Union and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Johns was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph Johns, Jonah Johns and Jay Johns; and two sisters, Guynell Inman and Essie Johns. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Bill Adams and the Rev. Sal Barone.

The family will be at the home of his niece, Sara J. Jones, 102 Poplar St., Union, and will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services. Memorials may be made to the Union Church of God, 1115 Thompson Boulevard, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Rosa A. Pendergraph Thompson, 85, of 104 McKanic Road, widow of the late Wilbert Thompson, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Thompson was born in Union County on Sept. 16, 1918, a daughter of the late Tim and Elizabeth Shirley Pendergraph. She was a homemaker and a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher, member of the church choir and also played the piano.

Survivors include five daughters, Virginia Rice, Dorothy Wallace, Deloris Booker, Mac Francis Salter and Deborah J. Thompson, all of Union; six sons, Ralph Thompson, Wilbert Thompson Jr., James Arthur Thompson, Leroy Thompson, Odell Thompson and Neville C. Thompson, all of Union; 40 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Maple Ridge Baptist Church in the Monarch Community with the Rev. Ertha Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church Friday at 2 p.m. to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Darlene Littlejohn, 112 McKanic Road, Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Yvonne S. Cunningham
Beauty shop owner

Yvonne Stevens Cunning-ham, 67, of 205 Fairbanks St., Jonesville, wife of James Mack Cunningham, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at 10:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Cunningham was born in West Springs on June 25, 1935, a daughter of the late Henry and Jaynell Hyatt Stevens.

She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Cunningham was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Keller's Beauty School and was owner of Yvonne's Beauty Nook.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee C. and Len Browder of Aiken and Rise C. and Steve Brown of Greenville; a son and daughter-in-law, James M. Cunningham, Jr. and Susan Cunningham of Union; a sister, Donna S. Edens of West Springs; a brother, Dennis Stevens of West Springs and two grandchildren, Thomas Browder of Aiken and James M. (Jay) Cunningham, III of Union.

Mrs. Cunningham was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Stevens. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James (Bogan) Fowler, Jimmy Wayne Gallman, Tim Stevens, Bobby Fowler, Buddy Scott, Wesley Lane, Dean Adams and Jimmy Roberson. The body will be at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to the Jonesville Baptist Church Building Fund, 301 Church St., Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mabel West Fowler
Former retail salesperson

Mabel West Fowler, 83, widow of William B. Fowler, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Fowler was the daughter of the late Claude M. and Annie Belle Gist West. She worked for many years on Main Street in retail sales at Belk Department Store and Graham Cash Co. Mrs. Fowler was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and a long time member of the choir.

She is survived by two sisters, Catherine W. Taylor of Union and Virginia W. Adams and husband Sam of Seneca; a brother, Herbert West and wife Betty of Bamberg; two nieces and a nephew, Shirley Vaughan and husband Charlie, Anne Mitros and husband Pat and Buddy West and wife, Kim; three great-nieces and two great-nephews, Kitty Vaughan Cindy Hulon, Hagan West, Ashley Mitros and Caulder West.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church on with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Bowling officiating. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family will be at the home of Shirley and Charlie Vaughan, 212 Hillcrest Drive.
