Mary Etta Cudd Huntsinger, 89, widow of Lawrence E. Huntsinger Sr., formerly of Union, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004 at 10:55 p.m. in Inman Health Care. Mrs. Huntsinger was born in Union County on Aug. 20, 1914, a daughter of the late Thomas Cudd and Josie Lee Bentley Cudd Schultz and step-daughter of the late Tom Schultz. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union and the Presbyterian Women and was retired from Conso Products Co.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence E. Huntsinger Jr. and wife Sheila of Boiling Springs; three grandchildren, Amanda H. Cothran of Boiling Springs, Trevor Huntsinger of Manning and Ken Jones of Spartanburg; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Charlie Horne. The family is at the home of Mary Crocker, 300 South Boyce St., Union and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Upstate S.C. Chapter, 555 Reidville Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29306. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Clorese B. Tucker
PAULINE Clorese Billings Tucker, 78, of 512 Tucker Road, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at White Oak Manor. Mrs.Tucker was born April 30, 1925, in Spartanburg County, the daughter of the late Jerry and Lulu Smith Billings. She was the widow of Paul Daniel (P.D.) Tucker. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a former choir member.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Lovingood of Arcadia and Margaret Edmonds of Pauline; three sons, Jerry Tucker and his wife, Linda, of Pauline, Ron Tucker and his wife, Sherrie, of Jonesville, and Don Tucker and his wife, Donna, of Enoree; a sister, Irene Lawson, of Lyman; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two granddaughters, Melissa Edmonds and Rhonda Tucker; a brother, Sam Billings; a sister, Eva Garner; and a son-in-law, Sam Lovingood. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.Dr. C. Randolph Pettit Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight at FloydÕs Greenlawn Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Lebanon Baptist Church Building Fund, 2153 Mount Lebanon Road, Buffalo, S.C. 29321, or to the Alzheimer's Assocation, Upstate S.C. Chapter, 110 South Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The family is at their respective homes. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Jean S. Yount
Jean Stoudemire Yount, 72, widow of Joseph Mac Yount, of 1300 S. Pinckney St., Pinckney Place, Union, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Yount was born in Newberry County July 13, 1931, the daughter of the late Boozer and Julia Roberts Stoudemire. Mrs. Yount was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church of Fort Mil and was employed as manager of several dry cleaners across the upstate.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie E. and Judy K. Yount of Union; two sisters, Mattie Lee Vanderford of Union and Jo Anne Reid of Lexington; a grandson, Steven Jacob Yount of Union; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Daniel David and Jenni Yount of Colorado; a step-grandson and a step-granddaughter, both of Colorado; three nieces, three nephews, three great nephews, a great niece and two special friends, Tyger Shetley and Rayburn Smith.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb and the Rev. Ralph Lawson Sr. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel. The family is at the home of Mrs. Yount's sister, Mattie Vanderford, 124 City View Circle, Union. Lewis Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Lorena G. Jeter
Lorena G. Jeter of 305 Columbus St., died Feb. 27, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at the home, 305 Columbus St. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Union Community Funeral Home.
John Wilson Gregory
A memorial mass for John Wilson Gregory, age 67, who died Nov. 27, 2002, husband of Joanne Hartley Gregory of 408 West Hillcrest Ave., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Regina D. Mixon
Regina Dare Mixon, 43, of 221 E. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. from injuries received in an automobile accident. Miss Mixon was born in Florence, S.C. on Oct. 11, 1959, a daughter of the late William Harrison Mixon and Jeannette Walters Mixon. She was a graduate of Union High School and member of the First Baptist Church of Union.
Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Jenny Lynn and Tommy Knox of Union; an uncle and aunt, Jackie and Celia Mixon of Hartsville and two cousins, Gene Mixon and Howard Mixon, both of Hartsville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Wanda Free Montgomery
COMMERCE, Ga. Funeral services for Wanda Christeen (Free) Montgomery, 40, wife of Wayne E. Montgomery, were held Tuesday in Commerce. Mrs. Montgomery died of a sudden illness Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her mother, Ruth Knight of Spartanburg; two sons and a daughter of Commerce; a brother, Randy Free of Union; four sisters including Ella Horne, Anita Rose and Patti Rogers, all of Union; and a grandson. Ivie Funeral Home of Commerce had charge of arrangements.
Penny M. Smith
INMAN Penny Marie Smith, 41, of 141 Avalon Drive, Inman, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at 6:30 p. m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Miss Smith was born in Union on July 15, 1961, a daughter of the late Eugene Smith and Jeannette Stepps Smith. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Miss Smith was a graduate of Broome High School and attended Rutledge College.
Surviving are two sisters, Laura S. Childress of Boiling Springs and Mary S. Smith of Cowpens; a brother, G.C. Smith of Spartanburg; seven nieces and nephews and one great-nephew. Funeral services will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Randy Pettit, the Rev. Charles Hall and the Rev. Guy Langston. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Earl Lawson, Terry Lawson, Wayne Tucker, Richard Tucker, Curtis Smith and Maxy Smith. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her aunt, Addie Mae Lawson, 2320 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Clifford Stripling
Clifford Stripling, 51, husband of Burdie Stripling, of 252 Blue Ridge Road died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Stripling was born March 8, 1951 in Union County. He was a son of the late John C. and Ruth Pendergrass Stripling and was employed by the Michelin Tire Co.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Clifford Stripling Jr. and Shawn Jeffies, both of Spartanburg; two daughters, Linda Gail Stripling and Debra Ann Stripling, both of Spartanburg; two step-children, Jeanette Smith and Lawrence Long Jr., both of Jonesville; five brothers, John, Giles, Edward and Leon Stripling of Spartanburg and Willie Stripling of Coco, Fla.; three sisters, Ruth M. Jackson of Spartanburg, Sallie Small of Inman and Lelia Stripling of Spartanburg.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church in Jonesville. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be at the residence, Saturday and Sunday. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 Sunday afternoon to await the hour of service. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Edith Flynn Butler
Edith Flynn Butler, 84, widow of James G. Butler Sr., of 214 South Church St., Union, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Butler was born in Union on June 24, 1919, a daughter of the late Philip Dunn and Edith Smith Flynn. She was retired as director after 38 years of service with the Union County Department of Social Services.
Mrs. Butler was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of Circle #2. She was also a member of the Fairforest Chapter DAR, the Cherokee Chapter DAC, the Women's Study Club and the Union County Historical Foundation, each of which she served as president. Mrs. Butler also served as a volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital and Union County Meals on Wheels Program as long as she was able.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James G. and Linda N. Butler of Spring, TX; two brothers, Judge John Sartor Flynn of Union and Edward Dunn Flynn of Kennesaw, GA; one sister, Mrs. Paul S. (Frances) Mims of Anderson; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Butler was predeceased by a brother, Philip Dunn Flynn Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home, 214 South Church St., Union, S.C. 29379, where they will received friends Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tamassee DAR School, P.O. Box 8, Tamassee, S.C. 29686; or to the Union County Historical Foundation, P.O. Box 220, Union, S.C. 29379; or to the charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Margie B. Caldwell
Retired from Buffalo Mill Margie Bolton Caldwell, 87, former resident of Buffalo, widow of Varnell L. Caldwell, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Mrs. Caldwell was born in Woodland, N.C. on Aug., 2, 1915, a daughter of the late John Turner Bolton and Ella Josie Baggett Bolton. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a step-daughter, Vonzie Hamilton of Buffalo; a step-granddaughter, Sally Ann Hamilton of Buffalo; a niece, Mary Ruth Benthall of Roanoke Rapids, N.C; two nephews, Eugene Benthall and Wadis Hedgepath, both of Roanoke Rapids; and a great-niece, Pamela Benthall of Roanoke Rapids.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Tim Anderson. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 7:30 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of local arrangements.
Emily Tankersley Duncan
WHITMIRE Emily Tankersley Duncan, 85, of 512 Sims St., widow of Lloyd E. Duncan, died Thursday, February 27, in the Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Mrs. Duncan was born in Scott County, Va., a daughter of the late Orbin and Pearl Chandler Tankersley. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Charles Arnold Duncan, M. Ellison Duncan and Gerald William Duncan all of Whitmire, one brother, Lewis Tankersley of Waxhaw, N.C.; six sisters, Madge Walton of Rogersville, Tenn., Georgia Gable of Palm Beach, Fla.,Vema Flow of Fayetteville, N.C., Grace Brown of Whitmire, Joyce Moore of Union and Myrtle Lewis of West Columbia; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Friendship Baptist Church with burial in Whitmire Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire. Gray Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Betty Jo Mason
Betty Jo Mason, 78, formerly of Jonesville, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at 11:05 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after a brief illness. Miss Mason was born in Jonesville on May 14, 1924, a daughter of the late Charlie Simms Mason and Cecil Johnson Mason. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. Miss Mason was a graduate of Jonesville High School.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a nephew, Charles C. (Sonny) Mason Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Jonesville; two great-nephews, Jeff Mason of Jonesville and Jon Mason of Spartanburg. Miss Mason was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Ruth H. Burgess and Charles C. Mason Sr.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home of her nephew, Sonny and Sandy Mason, 239 Cedar Grove Road, Jonesville, and will receive friends at the cemetery Sunday immediately following grave side services. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
