Maggie Dickerson Bishop, 94, widow of George G. Bishop Sr., formerly of Union, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at 11:17 p.m in Lowman Home in White Rock. Funeral arrangements announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jessie C. Eison
Retired from S.C. Highway Dept. and Conso

Jessie C. Eison of 200 Enterprise St., Union, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg. Born in Union County March 26, 1916, he was the son of the late Richard Allen and Florence Richard Eison. He was the widower of Christine Kershaw Eison. Mr. Eison was a member of Bethany AME Church and was retired from the S.C. Highway Department and Conso.

Surviving are two sons, Leroy Eison of Tokama Park, Mass., and Jerry (Ola) Eison of the home; five sisters, Walena Peoples of Buffalo, N.Y., Elizabeth Smith of Union, Yaiomi Boston of New York City, Lavenia Lindsay of Philadelphia, Pa., Ruth Smith of Spartanburg; a brother, Holmes Ezell Eison of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Doshia Kershaw Smith of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethany AME Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gibson & Brown Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Maggie D. Bishop
Shelton native

Maggie Dickerson Bishop, 94, formerly of Union, widow of George G. Bishop Sr., died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at 11:17 p.m. in the Lowman Home in White Rock. Mrs. Bishop was born in Shelton on April 14, 1909, a daughter of the late Frank and Susie Carter Dickerson. She was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jean B. and Joseph L. Hodges Sr., of Chapin; three grandchildren, Amy H. Livingston, Joseph L. Hodges Jr., and Ruth Ann B. McCabe; three great-grandchildren, William Joseph Livingston, Trenton Joseph Hodges and Cole Christian Hodges. Mrs. Bishop was predeceased by a son, George C. Bishop Jr.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 10 until 11:30 a.m. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Hattie M. Harris

Funeral services for Hattie Queen Moorman Ferguson Harris, 83, formerly Walterboro, widow of Augustus Harris, were held at 2 p.m. today at New Horizon United Christian Church. Carolina Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

James Johnson
CARLISLE

James Johnson, of 521 Spring St., Carlisle, husband of Bessie Johnson, died at his home Monday, March 1, 2004. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Lucille C. Goodman
Retired from Monarch Mill

Lucille Crowell Goodman, 88, of 304 Jacobs Highway, Clinton, formerly of 302 Stutts Ave., Union, widow of C. L. Goodman, died Monday, March, 1, 2004 at 9:30 p.m. in National Health Care in Clinton. Mrs. Goodman was born in Salisbury, N.C., on Nov. 8, 1915,a daughter of the late Julius Hosie Crowell and Grace Lee Walton Crowell. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church of Union and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are four grandchildren reared in the home, Michael L. Kurtz of Union, Dwight S. Kurtz of Buffalo, Brian Kurtz of Atlanta, Ga., and Greta J. Kurtz of Winston Salem N.C.; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Mrs. Goodman was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Goodman Kurtz.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Augsburg Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of her grandson, Dwight S. Kurtz, 3693 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, (Putman Community) Buffalo and will receive friends at Augsburg Lutheran Church Wednesday from 1 until 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Augsburg Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Charles E. Tessnear
Founder of gospel group

PACOLET Charles Edward Tessnear, 65, of 555 Lemonade Road, Pacolet, widower of Antonette Viola Linder Tessnear, died at his residence Monday, March 1, 2004, at 5:45 a.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Tessnear was born in Pacolet on Nov. 10, 1938, a son of the late Charlie William Tessnear and Eunice Irene Mainer Tessnear. He attended the Pacolet Church of God of Prophecy and was the founder of the Tessnear Family Gospel Group.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Collin of the home and Jodi Hester of Broseley, Mo.; three sons, Lee Tessnear of Pacolet, David Tessnear and Paul Tessnear, both of Jonesville; 26 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pacolet Church of God of Prophecy conducted by the Rev. Paul Tessnear and the Rev. Roger Roof. Burial will be in the Cowpens City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tony Padgett, B. J. Padgett, William Hawkins, John Blackwell, DeWayne Thompson, Mickey Cudd and Jonathan Tessnear. The family is at the home of his daughter, Linda Collin, 555 Lemonade Road, Pacolet. The body will be placed in the church at 6 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Pacolet Church of God of Prophecy, P.O. Box 662, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Helen R. Walker
Member of Monarch Baptist

Helen R. Walker, 77, of 322 North Church St., died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Hospital. Born June 25, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John McNeal and Sara W. Carter. She was the widow of Henry Walker and a member of Monarch Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Harriet (Bobby) Means of Union; one son, Marvin Carter of New York, N.Y.; a special niece, Sara Mae Carter of Malvern, Pa.; three step-daughters, Lucille (Leo) Hunter of Windor, Conn., Lillie (James) Gregory of Baltimore, Conn., and Johnnie Willie Gore of Hartford, Conn.; four step-sons, Gene, Otis, Paul and Ben Walker, all of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at Monarch Baptist Church, Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary C. Walker
Union County resident

Mary (Tooly) Clayton Walker, 58, of 115 Bert Walker Road, Union, widow of Bert Walker, died Monday, March 1, 2004, at 5:40 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Walker was born on May 7, 1945, a daughter of the late Lester Lee Clayton and Helen Ford Clayton. She was a member of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda and Tim Black, Trudy and David Lawson, all of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Darlene Walker of Union; a sister, Pauline Hefner of Rock Hill; three brothers, Lewis Clayton and Sam Clayton, both of Union and Bobby Clayton of Jonesville; eight grandchildren, Jonathan and April Walker, Jill Lawson, Mary and Grace Black, and Christian, Jack and Walker Lawson.

Mrs. Walker was predeceased by a son, Randy Walker, and a sister, Erlene Clayton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Matt Gregory, Charles Clayton, Jeff Clayton, Michael Craig, Billy Medford and J.T. Vinson. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 115 Bert Walker Road, Union. Memorials may be made to the Congestive Heart Failure Research at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, 101 E. Wood St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Hattie M. Harris
Domestic worker

Hattie Queen Mooreman Ferguson Harris, 83, formerly of 345 Lakeshore Dr., Walterboro, widow of Augustus Harris, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in St. George Health Care in St. George after a sudden illness. She was born in Union County on May 14, 1920, a daughter of the late Julius Sr. and Louise Mayes Mooreman. She was a domestic worker and a member of New Hope AME Zion Church. She was first married to the late Johnnie Ferguson.

Survivors include a daughter, Josephine (Joei) Ferguson of Walterboro; two grandsons, Johnny Tee (Tonya) Deal of Columbia and Daniel Joseph (Veronica) Deal of Greenville; two great-grandsons, J'Quan Ty'rek and Marquise Jayden Deal, both of Columbia; a special friend, Harmon Ford; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Horizon United Christian Church in Union conducted by the Rev. Orlando S. Allen and the Rev. James W. Boyd. Burial will be in the New Hope AME Zion Church Cemetery in Sedalia. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her niece, Hattie L. Mooreman, 113 Powell St., Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Bernice G. Billings
Oldest member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist

Bernice Grant (Granny) Billings, 95, widow of Garland C. Billings, died Sunday at 10:10 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Billings was born in Walnut Grove on July 23, 1907, a daughter of the late James Francis M. Grant and Bessie Smith Grant. She was the oldest member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and was a devoted wife and mother.

Surviving are four daughters, Jean Cathcart and Joyce (Ronald) Pettit, of Pauline; Sarah (Franklin) Cathcart of Union and Betty (Donald) Wilburn of Monroe, N.C.; a son, Garland Robbie (Madge) Billings of Wellford; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Billings was predeceased by four sisters, her twin, Bertie Grant; and Alice Nanney, Annie Myrtle Bishop and Patra Floyd.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Dr. Ron Culbertson, and Dr. Randy Pettit. Burial will be in the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Pattie Shropshire, 101 Maid Marion Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dr. A. Chalmers Hope
Former Union physician

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Dr. Alex Chalmers Hope, 90, of Charlotte, widower of Virginia Nalle Campbell Hope, died Feb. 24, 2003, at the Carriage Club of Charlotte Healthcare facility. Dr. Hope was born on Oct. 15, 1912, in Lockhart, the youngest child of Dr. William David Hope and Mattie Amanda Hanna Hope. Dr. Hope had three brothers all physicians and six sisters, all of whom predeceased him.

Dr. Hope interned at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and began his practice of medicine in Union with his father and brother in 1938. Dr. Hope is survived by two sons, Dr. Alex Chalmers (Chammie) Hope Jr. of Charlotte and Stephen C. Hope of Charleston. He was predeceased by his middle son, William Douglass Hope. Lorena G. Jeter
Union County native

Lorena G. Jeter, 88, widow of Ezell Jeter Sr., of 305 Columbus St., died Feb. 27, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County Aug. 26, 1914. She was a member of the senior choir and missionary society of McBeth Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Ezell Jeter Jr., Fred Jeter and Billy Jeter, all of Union; a daughter, Jessie L. Abrams of Norfolk, Va.; 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Tuesday at McBeth Baptist Church by the Rev. T.D. Mauney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday at Union Community Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 305 Columbus St. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Terry J. May
Former Milliken director of public affairs

GREER ÑTerry Jennings May, 55, husband of Susan Gerring May of 508 East Silverleaf St., Greer, died Saturday at 4:25 p.m. in Greenville Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. May was born in Union on Dec. 8 1947, a son of Mrs. Mamie Fallaw May of Union and the late William J. (Bill) May.

He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church of Taylors. He was a graduate of Union High School, the University of South Carolina and the Baptist College of Charleston. He was president and owner of Leadership Dynamics Inc. in Greenville and was formerly employed for 20 years as public affairs director of Milliken & Co.'s Research Center in Spartanburg. He was the founder of the Bipex Textile Group of S.C. and was very active in the (Crafted with Pride in the USA) campaign of Milliken & Co., and was a member of several business organizations in the Upstate.

He was active with several tennis teams in the Greenville area and started the Silverleaf Men's Wednesday night Tennis Club. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons, Matthew Tyler (Matt) May of the Greenville City Police Department of Taylors and Pfc. John Bradford (Brad) May, and wife Laura James May, with the 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army in Wiesbaden, Germany; a sister, Mrs. Frankie (Claudia M.) Greer of Union; two nephews, Chad Greer of Jonesville and Alex Greer of Gaffney and several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church conducted by Father Steve Brovey. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Union Memorial Gardens. Mr. May's uncle, the Rev. Weldon Fallaw, will give a eulogy at the burial service. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Cox, Jim Domnick, Arch Wilder, Peter Groot, Richard Barton and Ted Burns.

Men of the Silverleaf Tennis Team are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The family will receive friends this evening at the home, 508 Silverleaf St., Greer, and at the home of his sister, Claudia Greer, 222 Jones Ford Road in Union. Mr. May will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday where the family will receive friends.

The family will also receive friends following the graveside service in Union. Memorials may be made to the Prince of Peace Catholic Church Building Fund, 1209 Brushy Creek Road, Taylors, S.C., 29687. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
